Otitis Media Middle Ear Effusion Identification and Characterization Using an Optical Coherence Tomography Otoscope.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the feasibility of detecting and differentiating middle ear effusions (MEEs) using an optical coherence tomography ( … apture quality images improved over time, from 50% to 69.4% over the study period. CONCLUSION: OCT otoscopy shows promise for facilitating accurate MEE detection. The imageability with the prototype device was affected by age, with older children being easier to image, similar to current ear diagnostic technologies.

Chronic suppurative otitis media, middle ear pathology and corresponding hearing loss in a cohort of Greenlandic children.

BACKGROUND: Otitis media (OM) has been observed at elevated prevalence rates in Greenlandic children. OM associated hearing loss (HL) may compromise the children's linguistic skills, social development and educational achievements. OBJECTIVES: We investigated the prevalence of chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM), otitis media with effusion (OME) and tympanic membrane sequelae of OM, and compared the corresponding hearing thresholds. METHODS: In 2010 we examined a cohort of 223 Greenlandic children aged 4-10 years by video otoscopy, tympanometry and tested hearing thresholds for the low-f…

A Rare Case of Primary Neuroendocrine Carcinomas in the Ear and Throat and Review of Literatures.

The neuroendocrine carcinomas (NECs) of the head and neck are rare. The purpose of this article is to explore the diagnosis and treatment of NECs in the ear and larynx. We report a case of a patient with NECs found in the ear and throat simultaneously, and the relevant literatures are reviewed. It is difficult to identify which is the original site. There is no specific clinical manifestation of NECs in the ear and throat, and carcinoid syndrome is a rare situation. Surgery is still the preferred treatment for this disease. For patients with metastasis, radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy are req

Optical assessment of the in vivo tympanic membrane status using a handheld optical coherence tomography-based otoscope.

OBJECTIVE: Conventional otoscopes and oto-endoscopes, which are used to examine the tympanic membrane (TM), do not provide tomographic information. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) non-invasively reveals the depth-resolved internal microstructure of the TM with very high spatial resolution. We designed this study to examine the TMs with middle ear diseases using a handheld otoscope employing 860 nm spectral domain (SD)-OCT, combined with video camera and to demonstrate the clinical applicability of this system. DESIGN: A total of 120 patients with otologic symptoms were enrolled. TM images

Ear bleeding: A sign not to be underestimated in cases of strangulation.

Otorrhagia is commonly associated with cranial trauma and diving accidents. In some forensic manuals, bleeding in the ears is anecdotally associated with strangulation. We report 2 cases of criminal strangulation with hemotympanum and otorrhagia, emphasizing the importance of this sign with strangulation. We present the proposed pathophysiology of the injuries and the value of otoscopic evaluation to complete the external examination in forensic cases suspicious for strangulation.

[Myxoma of the middle ear-a rare cause of facial palsy].

In case of the co-occurrence of facial palsy and inflammation-like symptoms of the same ear, the differential diagnosis is focused on viral (herpes zoster) or bacterial diseases. We report a patient for whom the surgical exploration of the middle ear revealed a benign tumor: a myxoma. These neoplasias are rare tumors in the head and neck region. The typical tumor site is the atrium of heart. In the ear, the tumor grows slowly and remains asymptomatic unless it irritates structures such as the facial nerve or the vestibular organ. Histologically, the tumor presents a "myxoid" matrix that is ric

The contralateral ear in cholesteatoma.

Middle ear cholesteatoma has been extensively studied. Theories of cholesteatoma pathogenesis involving previous tympanic membrane retraction are the most widely accepted, but the contralateral ear in patients with cholesteatoma remains unstudied. This study aimed to investigate the contralateral ear in patients with cholesteatoma, and to determine whether the characteristics of it differ according to patient age and cholesteatoma growth patterns. This study was cross sectional. We evaluated 356 patients with middle ear cholesteatoma in at least one ear, and no history of surgery, between Augu
