Three of 4 pigs inoculated with 10 eggs of Taenia solium became infected. In those pigs infected with larger numbers of eggs, all became infected. Specific antibodies against the metacestodes were found in serum at day 30 postinoculation (PI) in animals that received 1,000 or more eggs and at day 60 in those that received 10 or 100 eggs. This paper represents the first report of the nematode Anisakis simplex in the American shad (Alosa sapidissima) in its introduced range in the American Pacific Northwest. All the adult shad sampled from spawning populations in the Willamette (n = 9) and Umpqua (n = 12) rivers were infected with A. simplex with intensities ranging from 6 to 89 worms per fish. Faecal specimens were taken from 205 sheep and goats housed in five different localities in the west-central part of Poland. All faecal specimens were examined for Cryptosporidium by using microscopy screening of smears stained by modified Ziehl-Neelsen technique and commercial enzyme immunoassay. An epidemiological survey for infection with Schistosoma mansoni was carried out in the community of Catharina Sophia in northern Surinam. The antigenic fraction of a cell free homogenate of each of Trichinella spiralis and T. pseudospiralis were prepared to be used for induction of immunity against S. mansoni in albino mice. This study used a method of retrieving eggs from soil to examine the spatial and temporal dynamics of soil contamination with geohelminth eggs. The level of soil contamination in two children's homes in Jamaica was determined before and after further soil contamination was prevented by chemotherapy. The morphology of Schistosoma mansoni eggs in intestinal tissues (oograms), and egg hatching in faeces, were studied after parenteral administration of praziquantel (PZQ) to infected mice. PZQ was given parentally in doses of 60 mg kg-1 for one day, five days or 10 days. Eleven days after initiation of therapy, oograms from all groups receiving PZQ showed more dead eggs than controls; a dose response was also observed. Ova of S. intercalatum have been found in the urban city of Port Harcourt in the Niger Delta area of Nigeria, following examination of stool and urine samples from 1,709 persons (5-15 years of age) resident in various parts of the city. The ova occurred only in urine, with prevalence ranging from 1.0% to 9.8% with an overall prevalence of 5.7%. The intensity of the infection was low. Dynamics of egg production of the tapeworm Diphyllobothrium dendriticum has been estimated experimentally in nestlings of the herring gull Larus argentatus per day and per reproductive period. The number of eggs in strobiles has been estimated for the maturation period. Mean egg production of the tapeworm per day (10.43 +/- 2.72 mln) is two orders of magnitude as high as the maximum number of eggs in a mature strobile (0.206 +/- 0.007). It is proposed to estimate coefficient of reproduction intensity as the ratio of egg output per unit of time and maximum egg number in a mature strobile.

An epidemiological survey was made in 4 villages of the recently discovered Schistosoma mansoni focus of Bana (Niger). The total prevalence of intestinal schistosomiasis is 15%. The highest prevalences are noted in the age-group from 20 to 38 years old. The mean egg load is moderate: 11.3 eggs/g of stools. Several hypothesis are discussed to explain the low endemicity of this focus.

The in vivo efficacy of monensin against Fasciola hepatica was determined in the albino rat. The results were variable, with monensin generally showing greater activity against juvenile (two-week-old) than adult (12-week-old) flukes. Significant (p less than 0.005) reductions in worm burdens were obtained only following treatment of adult flukes with 2 X 10 mg/kg monensin (52.9% efficacy), and of juvenile flukes with 1 X 10 mg/kg (42.4% efficacy) and 2 X 10 mg/kg (56.23% efficacy). The reliability of using visible haematuria as an indirect screening technique to detect Schistosoma haematobium was investigated in 418 school children from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Nytrel monofilament polyamide filters have recently been strongly advocated as a cheap reusable method for filtering urine in field studies of Schistosoma haematobium endemic areas. We examined 1230 persons in a highly endemic area, filtering 10 ml urine through Nytrel filters and counting the eggs retained.
