In this study we investigated centrally mediated parasympathetic regulation of modulated cardiac vagal tone among children with severe cyanotic and pallid breath-holding spells by examining respiratory sinus arrhythmia. Respiratory sinus arrhythmia was evaluated in 41 children; 17 subjects with cyanotic breath-holding spells (6 boys, 11 girls; mean age 37.1 months), 7 subjects with pallid breath-holding spells (2 boys, 5 girls; mean age 33.0 months), and 17 controls (8 boys, 9 girls; mean age 41.2 months). Subjects had recurrent (more than 3) severe breath-holding spells. Each subject's electr

Parasympathetic receptor blockade and the heart rate performance curve. Med. Sci Sports Sci., Vol. 30. No. 2, pp. 229-233, 1998. The aim of the present study was to investigate the influence of parasympathetic receptor blockade on the heart rate performance curve (HRPC). Twenty healthy male subjects performed a first cycle ergometer test (F), showing a HRPC deflection of varying degree and direction. Subjects then in random order performed two additional cycle ergometer tests, one with atropine (A) and the other with placebo (P). Two lactate turn points (LTP1, and LTP2) were determined by mean

In 8 experiments on anaesthetised cats bursts stimulation of the peripheral cut end of right vagus nerve leads to synchronisation of cardiac and vagus rhythms. Alterations of burst sequence frequency within definite limits has been synchronously reproduced by heart thus creating managed brady-cardia possibility. Neurotensin (4.10(-8) M intravenously) accelerate heart rate and potentiate total vagal chronotropic effect. Vagotropic effect of the neurotensin is due to enlargement of the tonic component's strength in the vagal chronotropic effect. On the other hand, extent of the synchronizing vag

Vasomotor rhinitis is a common problem in contemporary rhinology. Although this disease has been described for decades, the pathophysiology and treatment are yet to be fully understood or described. A review of the literature of vasomotor rhinitis focusing mainly on pathophysiology and treatment is presented. Following detailed cadaver dissections a new treatment approach that takes advantage of endoscopic techniques has been proposed. Comparison with existing techniques and discussion of the pathophysiology of vasomotor rhinitis is presented. Treatment suggestions conclude the analysis, with

A symmetrical cross-tolerance was found between two phencyclidine derivatives--phencyclidine and cyclohexamine--and also between two cholinergic drugs--physostigmine and oxotremorine. On the other hand, mice rendered tolerant to the phencyclidine derivatives showed cross-tolerance to these cholinergic drugs, but no cross-tolerance was observed in the opposite direction. The applicability of such experiments to the elucidation of neurochemical interactions of centrally acting drugs is discussed.

Cerebral chemical vasomotor reactivity and autoregulation were tested in normal baboons before and after intravertebral, intravenous and (or) intracarotid infusion of atropine and neostigmine. Furthermore, disordered cholinergic neurotransmission and dysautoregulation after acute experimental cerebral infarction have also been investigated. Intravertebral injection of atropine suppressed the increase of CBF by inhalation of 5% CO2 and enhanced the decrease of CBF induced by hyperventilation, but did not appreciably affect autoregulatory response. On the other hand, cerebral autoregulatory vaso

The pandemic viral illness COVID-19 is especially life-threatening in the elderly and in those with any of a variety of chronic medical conditions. This essay explores the possibility that the heightened risk may involve activation of the "extended autonomic system" (EAS). Traditionally, the autonomic nervous system has been viewed as consisting of the sympathetic nervous system, the parasympathetic nervous system, and the enteric nervous system. Over the past century, however, neuroendocrine and neuroimmune systems have come to the fore, justifying expansion of the meaning of "autonomic." Add…

OBJECTIVES: This paper will review the central nervous control of the lower urinary tract.
METHODS: Neuroanatomical, electrophysiological and pharmacological techniques have provided information about the neural circuitry and the neurotransmitters involved in the neural control of voiding.
RESULTS: Storage of urine is dependent in part upon spinal reflex mechanisms that activate sympathetic and somatic pathways to the urethral outlet as well as tonic inhibitory systems in the brain that suppress the parasympathetic outflow to the urinary bladder. Voiding is mediated by inhibition of sympathe

Vagoglossopharyngeal neuralgia is a rare pathology whose atypical forms, dominated by syncopal manifestations, are still rarer. Although the … stive symptoms together with the neuralgia; only a syncopal type of cardiac symptoms related to the parasympathetic nervous system were described. The hypothesis was that the revealing digestive symptoms are linked to a similar parasympathetic mechanism, implying the visceral component of the Xth cranial nerve.

We refer to the gut as a neurological organ to emphasize the particular importance of the nervous system in the regulation of digestive functions, given that the gastrointestinal tract is innervated by five different classes of neurons: intrinsic enteric neurons, vagal afferents, spinal afferents, parasympathetic efferents and sympathetic efferents. Virtually each aspect of digestive activity is under the regulatory influence of neurons, among which the enteric nervous system (ENS) plays the most important part. The ENS acts like a brain in the gut that functions independently of the central n

Baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) is an important function of the nervous system and essential for maintaining blood pressure levels in the physiological range. In hypertension, BRS is decreased both in man and animals. Although increased sympathetic activity is thought to be the main cause of decreased BRS, hence the development of hypertension, the BRS is regulated by both sympathetic (SNS) and parasympathetic (PNS) nervous system. Here, we analyzed neuropeptide changes in the lateral hypothalamus (LH), which favours the SNS activity, as well as in PNS nuclei in the brainstem of spontaneously hyp

Paragangliomas (PGLs) are a heterogeneous group of tumours of the nonepithelial neuroendocrine type, with a significant percentage being genetically determined. They can develop from cells of the parasympathetic as well as the sympathetic nervous system. Tumours located in the head and neck usually have a parasympathetic origin, whereas those in the abdomen have a sympathetic origin. The aim of this study was to determine whether the development of PGLs at both locations is associated with specific variants of genes with proven relevance for the formation of these tumours. Thirty-one patients
