The parenting skills used to gain compliance (e.g., instruction giving, praise, discipline techniques) as well as child behavior (e.g., noncompliance) are coded on an observation form. Examined children's coping and involuntary responses to the stress of living with a depressed parent in relation to their symptoms of anxiety/depression and aggression. Sixty-six clinically depressed adults rated their children's (ages 7 to 17 years old; N = 101) coping and involuntary responses to parental stressors and anxiety/depressive and aggressive behavior symptoms. Based on parent report, children of depressed parents had high rates of symptoms of anxiety/depression and aggression, were exposed to moderate levels of parental stressors (parental intrusiveness, parental withdrawal), and

The impact of parental death and the efficacy of a coping-skills intervention were examined on the adjustment of 211 adolescent children of parents with HIV/AIDS (PWH) over a 2-year period. During the follow-up period, 35% of the PWH died. Using longitudinal structural equation model, controlling for prior measures of adjustment at baseline, the authors found that children of deceased PWH reported significantly more emotional distress and problem behaviors 2 years later. Youth randomized with their parent to a coping-skills intervention reported significantly fewer problem behaviors and sexual

The quality of the parents' marital bond and their ability to work together in the parenting role were examined for the parents of school-aged children (ages 6-18) with mild and moderate mental retardation (n = 38) and a comparable group of parents of typically developing children (n = 34). Significantly more negative functioning for the parents of mentally retarded children was observed during marital interactions, and parent-child interactions but was not reflected in their self-reports of marriage and parenting, suggesting that expectations about marital and parenting strains may modulate n…

Models of intergenerational transmission of depression implicate lower sensitive parenting as a key mechanism linking maternal depressive symptoms and offspring outcomes. A well-developed literature demonstrates consistent, modest, negative associations between maternal depressive symptoms and sensitive parenting. However, this literature relies primarily on methods ill-suited to examine developmental timing or account for confounding with time-varying exposures. To address these limitations, we implemented marginal structural models, an approach developed to test timing effects and address co…

Irritability is a core symptom and diagnostic criterion in several childhood psychiatric disorders. Research has documented bidirectional associations between child irritability and parenting practices; however, cultural variations in these associations remain underexplored.Using three-wave longitudinal data (N = 2,408) from the Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study (FFCWS) in the United States, this study examined associations between child irritability, parenting behaviors (psychological aggression, physical assault, neglect, and non-violent discipline) and parenting stress across thr…

OBJECTIVES: Our study aimed to understand whether parenting practices, including positive parenting and caregiver involvement, and family conflict, moderated the relationship between experiences of racial-ethnic discrimination and mental health outcomes among Latine adolescents. METHODS: We used a cross-sectional study design using surveys administered to Latine adolescents ages 13–17 years and their primary caregivers in Indianapolis, Indiana. Data collected included demographics, experiences of racial-ethnic discrimination measured by the Everyday Discrimination Scale (EDS), conflict (Parent…

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a critical developmental period during which parenting practices interact with temperament and sociocultural context to shape mental health and adaptation. Most parenting models are derived from Western settings, with limited evidence from India.
METHODS: This simultaneous mixed methods study drew on cross sectional data from the Indian Consortium on Vulnerability to Externalizing Disorders and Addictions (cVEDA) cohort, including adolescents aged 12-17 years (parent report n = 931; child report n = 836). Exploratory factor analysis was conducted on parent and child…

INTRODUCTION: Understanding the form, function, and meaning of occupations is essential for effective occupational therapy practice. Parenting is widely recognised as a meaningful and valued occupation. The Parenting Occupations and Purposes (POP) Framework conceptualises parenting occupations and their underlying purposes, but its validity in real-world contexts has not been tested. This study aimed to evaluate the applicability of the POP Framework among parents in Ireland.
METHODS: An exploratory descriptive design using Experience Sampling Methodology captured real-time data on parenting …

The COVID-19 pandemic constituted a public health crisis bound to impact couples, parents, and families globally. However, the literature on the impacts of COVID-19 in families is not yet integrated. This systematic review aims to (1) provide an overview of how the COVID-19 pandemic potentially changed family systems, especially the couples and parenting dynamics, as well as (2) integrate inconsistent findings, and, finally, (3) define new avenues for research and clinical practice. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were defined for this review. The data was collected in bibliographic databases…

The present study examined the bidirectional relationships among mindful parenting, parent-child relationships, and child internalizing behaviors (e.g., anxiety, depression, and social withdrawal) using a longitudinal design. A total of 1,201 Chinese preschoolers (50.3 % boys; age: M = 3.90 years, SD = 0.78) were assessed through parent reports at two time points, one year apart. Cross-lagged panel analysis revealed that mindful parenting at T1 positively predicted parent-child relationships (β = 0.17, p < 0.001) and negatively children's internalizing behaviors (β = -0.07, p < 0.05) at T2. Ho…

Emerging adulthood is a period when enduring eating patterns consolidate and guide daily food choices. This cross-sectional study examined whether perceived parenting and early maladaptive schema (EMS) domains were associated with intuitive eating, cognitive restraint, emotional eating, and uncontrolled eating among Turkish emerging adults (N = 446). Participants completed validated measures of intuitive and dysregulated eating, maternal/paternal warmth, overprotection, rejection, and five EMS domains. Hierarchical regressions entered demographics and lifestyle factors (Step 1), parenting (Ste…

INTRODUCTION: Laurence Steinberg's 2001 presidential address to the Society for Research on Adolescence was titled "We know some things: Parent-child relationships in retrospect and prospect." Because this influential address, the field of parenting research has further expanded, particularly regarding work on youth substance use. The current study seeks to summarize the literature linking parenting characteristics with adolescent substance use (alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use) to highlight the amount of evidence that exists and where the field might move forward.
METHODS: A total of 533…

BACKGROUND: Type 1 diabetes is a chronic condition that typically develops in childhood and requires intensive daily management. This responsibility not only affects children but also places considerable emotional and practical strain on parents. Social support is thought to be a key factor in helping parents cope with these challenges.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to identify the challenges faced by parents of children with Type 1 diabetes and to explore the relationship between these challenges and their perceived levels of social support.
METHODS: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was co

BackgroundHomelessness among women and children is a growing concern, shaped by intersecting structural inequities. Service providers working with women who are homeless, particularly those who are pregnant and/or parenting young children, navigate complex responsibilities that span legal, medical, housing, child welfare, and psychosocial domains. These responsibilities are often carried out in under-resourced environments and in response to trauma rooted in systemic injustice. A feminist pragmatist perspective recognizes the relational, embodied, and context-specific nature of this work, and …
