Adenocarcinoma of the parotid salivary gland in a cow.

A 6-year-old Girolando dairy cow was presented for evaluation of a large subcutaneous facial mass. Fine-needle aspirates of the mass contained many neoplastic cells with high nuclear:cytoplasmic ratios arranged in sheets and loosely cohesive clusters with streaming erythrocytes and neutrophils in the background. Neoplastic cells were 13-25 μm in diameter and were round to cuboidal with variably distinct borders. Based on the signalment, anatomic location, and cytologic findings, differential diagnoses included salivary adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and mucoepidermoid carcinoma. The

Extramedullary plasmacytoma of the parotid gland. Report of a case with extensive amyloid deposition masking the cytologic and histopathologic picture.

BACKGROUND: Extramedullary plasmacytomas are uncommon. Although approximately 90% occur in the head and neck region, parotid gland localization is extremely rare. CASE: This report describes fine needle aspiration and histopathologic findings in an extramedullary plasmacytoma arising in the left parotid gland of a 62-year-old man. Aspiration smears showed multiple amorphous clumps of material admixed with ductal epithelial cells, multinucleated giant cells and inflammatory cells rich in plasma cells, suggestive of pleomorphic adenoma. In surgical material, excessive amyloid deposition was obs

Cytokeratin 13 (CK13) expression in cancer: a tissue microarray study on 10,439 tumors.

Cytokeratin 13 (CK13) is a type I acidic low molecular weight cytokeratin, which is mainly expressed in urothelium and in the squamous epithelium of various sites of origin. Loss of CK13 has been implicated in the development and progression of squamous epithelial neoplasms. To comprehensively determine CK13 expression in normal and neoplastic tissues, a tissue microarray containing 10,439 samples from 131 different tumor types and subtypes as well as 608 samples of 76 different normal tissue types was analyzed by immunohistochemistry. CK13 immunostaining was detectable in 42 (32.1%) of the 13

Proteasome particle-rich structures are widely present in human epithelial neoplasms: correlative light, confocal and electron microscopy study.

A novel cytoplasmic structure has been recently characterized by confocal and electron microscopy in H. pylori-infected human gastric epithelium, as an accumulation of barrel-like proteasome reactive particles colocalized with polyubiquitinated proteins, H. pylori toxins and the NOD1 receptor. This proteasome particle-rich cytoplasmic structure (PaCS), a sort of focal proteasome hyperplasia, was also detected in dysplastic cells and was found to be enriched in SHP2 and ERK proteins, known to play a role in H. pylori-mediated gastric carcinogenesis. However, no information is available on its o

Clinicopathologic and Molecular Characterization of Four Cases of Pediatric Salivary Secretory Carcinoma (SSC), One with ETV6-RET Fusion.

Salivary gland secretory carcinoma (SSC) is a neoplasm with characteristic histologic features, similar to those of secretory carcinoma of the breast. Only a few pediatric SSC cases have been reported, all with ETV6-NTRK3 fusion. We present four new pediatric SSC examples, one with a novel ETV6-RET fusion. Four cases of SSC were diagnosed between 2010 and 2020: 2 boys, 7 and 9 year-old with parotid tumors (1.5 and 1.3 cm, respectively); and two 14 year-old girls: one with a submandibular tumor (2.1 cm), and one with a parotid lesion (1.2 cm). Histologically, all tumors were similar: well-circu

Bilateral Multifocal Nodular Oncocytic Hyperplasia of the Parotid Gland Mimicking Warthin Tumor and Acinic Cell Carcinoma: A Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Multifocal nodular oncocytic hyperplasia (MNOH) of the salivary glands is a rare benign condition that can mimic both benign and malignant neoplasms, posing significant diagnostic challenges. Its bilateral and multifocal presentation is exceptionally uncommon. We present a unique case initially interpreted as bilateral Warthin tumor, later redefined as bilateral acinic cell carcinoma and finally reclassified as MNOH after comprehensive histopathological and immunohistochemical evaluation, and review the literature. CASE PRESENTATION: A 71-year-old woman presented with a long-stand

Multivariate prediction of the probability of recurrence in patients with carcinoma of the parotid gland.

BACKGROUND: Parotid gland carcinoma is an infrequent tumor, and series that report on these neoplasms are relatively scarce in the literature. The objective of the current study was to identify prognostic factors in patients with parotid gland carcinoma and to develop a method for defining the probability of recurrence. METHODS: Patients with parotid gland carcinoma who were treated at the authors' institution from January 1981 through December 2004 and who completed treatment constituted the study group. Disease-free survival was calculated by using the Kaplan-Meier method. Logistic regressi

Scapular metastasis from acinic cell carcinoma of parotid gland: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Acinic cell carcinoma (ACC) is a malignant epithelial neoplasm that commonly occurs in the parotid gland. It is known to have a high recurrence rate and the potential to metastasize to the lung or cervical lymph nodes. However, few cases of ACC with bone metastasis have been reported in the medical literature. CASE SUMMARY: The clinical significance of this case report lies in the unique site of occurrence of the metastasis: To the best of our knowledge, this report is the only literature documenting ACC arising in a shoulder mass. CONCLUSION: Unusual presentations of uncommon ma

Surprise Egg in the Nasopharynx: Basal Cell Adenocarcinoma.

Basal cell adenocarcinoma is a rare salivary gland neoplasm. It is most commonly seen in the parotid gland, and its involvement in the minor salivary glands or upper respiratory tract is very rare. Surgical excision and/or radiotherapy are the mainstay treatment modalities. The nasopharynx is an unusual location for salivary gland basal cell adenocarcinoma. In this case report, the nasopharyngeal punch biopsy of a 60-year-old male patient was reported as salivary gland adenoma, but the final pathological diagnosis was changed to basal cell adenocarcinoma after endoscopic nasopharyngectomy. The

Magnetic resonance imaging of adrenal angiomyolipoma.

Angiomyolipoma is a benign mesenchymal neoplasm that typically occurs in the kidney sporadically or in patients with tuberous sclerosis complex. Extrarenal angiomyolipomas are uncommon, and the liver is the most common extrarenal site. Other sites reported include the bone, colon, heart, lung, parotid gland, skin, spermatic cord, gynecologic regions, and retroperitoneum. A case of an angiomyolipoma involving the right adrenal gland in a 49-year-old female patient with tuberous sclerosis is reported. The magnetic resonance (MR) imaging features are also discussed. Only 2 cases describing adrena

Simultaneous bilateral distinct parotid tumors: a case report.

Parotid gland tumors are usually solitary tumors, and multiple tumors of the parotid gland are extremely rare. We present a highly unusual case of bilateral and simultaneous pleomorphic adenoma and basal cell adenoma of the parotid gland. We review the literature and discuss the clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and treatment of these two rare tumors.
