Prevalence and identification of caprine pasteurellosis in pneumonic goats in Bangladesh.

OBJECTIVE: This research aimed to assess the prevalence of caprine pasteurellosis, isolate and identify pasteurellosis (Mannheimia haemolytica and Pasteurella multocida) in pneumonic goats, and discover the main bacterial cause of pneumonia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred and five samples (94 nasal swabs and 11 lung tissues) from goats suspected of having pneumonia were taken and transferred aseptically to the laboratory. Following the processing of the collected samples, Pasteurella spp. was isolated with the aid of plate culture methods. Biochemical characteristics were used to identify…

Pasteurella associated rhinitis of rabbits: efficacy of penicillin therapy.

Thirty adult New Zealand white rabbits with chronic rhinitis were obtained from a commercial breeding colony. Penicillin sensitive strains of Pasteurella multocida were isolated from the upper respiratory tract of 28 (93%) of these rabbits. The diseased rabbits were treated with either intramuscular penicillin or penicillin nasal spray for 10 days and monitored for clinical signs of rhinitis and for the presence of Pasteurella multocida in the nasal passages. Rabbits receiving penicillin therapy by either route showed significant remission of the clinical signs of rhinitis during the study per…

Peritonitis Secondary to Uncommon Gram-Negative Coccobacillus Transmitted From a Cat in a Patient on Peritoneal Dialysis.

Peritonitis caused by gram-negative organisms is a significant complication encountered in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis and is associated with high morbidity and mortality. There has been recognition of peritonitis caused by uncommon organisms because of improved microbiological detection techniques. In this article, we report a rare case of peritonitis caused by Pasteurella multocida. We present a 58-year-old male on peritoneal dialysis with fever and abdominal pain. The peritoneal fluid was cloudy, and the analysis was consistent with peritonitis. The peritoneal fluid culture grew…

[On the phenotypical characteristics of human pasteurella, and pasteurella-like isolates (author's transl)].

Fourty-two human isolates that had been designated Pasteurella, or pasteurella-like organisms in the bacteriological routine laboratory were phenotypically characterized considering conventional, morphological and physiological features, and respiratory quinones. Thirty-seven of these strains fitted into the large traditional species, P. multocida, the majority of them being associated with alterations of the respiratory tract, and the rest with intestinal diseases, or putrid wound secretions mostly following animal bite or scratch lesions. Two strains isolated from sputum, or sinus maxillaris

Minimum inhibitory concentrations of tulathromycin against respiratory bacterial pathogens isolated from clinical cases in European cattle and swine and variability arising from changes in in vitro methodology.

The in vitro activity of tulathromycin was evaluated against common bovine and porcine respiratory pathogens collected from outbreaks of clinical disease across eight European countries from 1998 to 2001. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) for one isolate of each bacterial species from each outbreak were determined using a broth microdilution technique. The lowest concentrations inhibiting the growth of 90% of isolates (MIC90) for tulathromycin were 2 microg/ml for Mannheimia (Pasteurella) haemolytica, 1 microg/ml for Pasteurella multocida (bovine), and 2 microg/ml for Pasteurella multoc…

An Abrasion, a Prosthetic Shoulder, and a Cat with a Licking Tendency: Case Report and Literature Review of P. multocida Joint Seeding.

Pasteurella multocida is a pathogen well known for its zoonotic transmission, most commonly by cats and dogs. When bacteremia ensures from an infection, patients with foreign objects present in their bodies, including prosthetic joints and mesh implants, become vulnerable to seeding. There have been multiple documented cases in which P. multocida bacteremia has resulted in infection of both native and prosthetic joints. Furthermore, cases have been documented in which patients with P. multocida bacteremia have developed meningitis and neurological complications. Here, we present a patient with…

Pasteurella pantherarum sp. nov., a novel species obtained from the oral cavity of lions and tigers representing a possible new candidate for bite wounds inflicted by these animals.

A new taxon, including 25 strains, obtained from the oral cavity of lions, tigers and a karakal in Danish zoos, was characterized phenotypically and genotypically. Colonies were typical of bacteria of taxa within Pasteurella cultured on Columbia blood agar or chocolate agar and demonstrated a variation in diameter of 1.5-2 mm after 24 h of incubation at 37 °C. Fourteen isolates were characterized by 16S rRNA gene sequencing and showed 98-100% identity with the highest similarity of 97-98% to the type strain of Pasteurella multocida. Partial rpoB gene sequences showed 97-100% identity among str…

Re-emergence of bovine haemorrhagic septicaemia in Hungary.

This paper reports an outbreak of haemorrhagic septicaemia caused by Pasteurella multocida B:2 in beef calves, a disease that has not been described in the Hungarian literature since 1943, and has not been reported to the World Organisation For Animal Health (OIE) since 1970. Acute haemorrhagic septicaemia was confirmed in beef calves on one small farm, and was suspected on two further nearby holdings with concomitant unexplained losses. The source of the infection could not be determined. Apart from a short duration of depression and loss of appetite, the affected calves developed characteris…

Perplexing pneumonia: Pasteurella lung infection.

Pasteurella multocida, commonly found in the oropharyngeal flora of cats and dogs, typically causes soft tissue infections following animal bites or scratches. Respiratory infections due to Pasteurella are rare and usually occur in individuals with predisposing factors, such as chronic lung disease or immunosuppression. We present an unusual case of an elderly male who developed a Pasteurella lung infection after his cat licked his dentures. The patient, with no significant history of lung disease or immunosuppression, presented with fever, cough and dyspnoea. The diagnosis was confirmed via b…

Avian pasteurellosis: Taxonomy of the organisms involved and aspects of pathogenesis.

The taxonomy of the family Pasteurellaceae Pohl 1981 appears to be as complex as that of Enterobacteriaceae. 16S rRNA sequencing indicates that the family should be divided into more than 20 genera. According to phylogenetic investigations, the genus Pasteurella sensu stricto includes three subclusters, two of which represent taxa mainly associated with avian hosts. True species of the genera Actinobacillus and Haemophilus have not been reported from birds. Several new taxa, which have been shown to belong to the family Pasteurellaceae Pohl 1981 have been reported from birds. Some of these see
