Cross-sectional survey of factors associated with paternal involvement in the neonatal intensive care unit.

AIM AND OBJECTIVE: To describe factors associated with father involvement in the neonatal intensive care unit using the Heuristic model of the dynamic of parental behaviour and influence on children over time. BACKGROUND: Research shows that infants with involved fathers have better cognitive development, fewer crying episodes after caesarean birth, improved breastfeeding exclusivity and duration, and more regular sleep patterns. Preterm infants with involved fathers have improved cognitive development. DESIGN: This cross-sectional exploratory study used survey methodology to explore factors

Role of psychosocial risk factors in predicting maternal and paternal depressive symptomatology during pregnancy.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of several psychosocial risk factors in predicting depressive symptomatology during pregnancy in mothers and fathers, respectively. A total of 146 primiparous mothers and 105 primiparous fathers reporting a psychosocial risk condition were recruited independently from maternity and child health services, during the second trimester of pregnancy. All parents were evaluated for depressive symptomatology, anxiety, and perceived social support. Two hierarchical multiple regression analyses were performed to determine the role of psychosocial

Rare De Novo IGF2 Variant on the Paternal Allele in a Patient With Silver-Russell Syndrome.

Silver-Russell syndrome (SRS) is a rare, well-recognized disorder characterized by growth restriction, including intrauterine and postnatal growth. Most SRS cases are caused by hypomethylation of the paternal imprinting center 1 (IC1) in chromosome 11p15.5 and maternal uniparental disomy in chromosome 7 (UPD7). Here, we report on a Chinese family with a 4 year old male proband presenting with low birth weight, growth retardation, short stature, a narrow chin, delayed bone age, and speech delays, as a result of a rare molecular etiology. Whole-exome sequencing was conducted, and a novel de novo

Male infant with paternal uniparental diploidy mosaicism and a 46,XX/46,XY karyotype.

A male patient with mosaic paternal uniparental diploidy (PUD) is presented. After birth, the patient presented with hypoglycemia, hemihypertrophy, umbilical hernia, and hepatomegaly. Afterward pancreatic hypertrophy, liver hemangiomas, and cysts were detected sonographically. At the age of 3.5 months, hepatoblastoma was diagnosed. To investigate suspected Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS), extensive genetic analyses were performed using DNA from chorionic villus sampling, amniocentesis, and peripheral blood lymphocytes (chromosome analysis, methylation-specific multiplex ligation-dependent pr

Primary congenital glaucoma due to paternal uniparental isodisomy of chromosome 2 and CYP1B1 deletion.

BACKGROUND: CYP1B1 variants and deletions are the most common cause of primary congenital glaucoma (PCG). METHODS: We investigated an individual with PCG from the Australian and New Zealand Registry of Advanced Glaucoma. We performed sequencing of the CYP1B1 gene, followed by Multiplex Ligation-dependent Probe Amplification and SNP array. RESULTS: We identified a homozygous deletion of the CYP1B1 gene by Multiplex Ligation-dependent Probe Amplification and confirmed that the father was heterozygous for a CYP1B1 deletion but the mother had normal gene copy number. SNP array identified paterna

Maternal and paternal emotional contributions to children's distress tolerance: Relations to child depressive symptoms.

In recent years, empirical studies have shown that the inability to tolerate distress is associated with a wide range of negative outcomes including eating addiction, drug abuse, alcohol use, and antisocial behavior in adults. However, few studies have examined family correlates of this ability in children. Also, past literature on child emotional competencies has mainly focused on documenting the linkages between mother and child and has neglected the role of fathers. Children (N = 54, M age = 10.15 years, SD = 1.02; 55.6% males) and their parents participated. Parents reported on their emoti

Multisite de novo mutations in human offspring after paternal exposure to ionizing radiation.

A genome-wide evaluation of the effects of ionizing radiation on mutation induction in the mouse germline has identified multisite de novo mutations (MSDNs) as marker for previous exposure. Here we present the results of a small pilot study of whole genome sequencing in offspring of soldiers who served in radar units on weapon systems that were emitting high-frequency radiation. We found cases of exceptionally high MSDN rates as well as an increased mean in our cohort: While a MSDN mutation is detected in average in 1 out of 5 offspring of unexposed controls, we observed 12 MSDNs in altogether

Review: The potential of seminal fluid mediated paternal-maternal communication to optimise pregnancy success.

Artificial insemination has been a landmark procedure in improving animal agriculture over the past 150 years. The utility of artificial insemination has facilitated a rapid improvement in animal genetics across agricultural species, leading to improvements of growth, health and productivity in poultry, swine, equine and cattle species. The utility of artificial insemination, as with all assisted reproductive technologies side-steps thousands of years of evolution that has led to the development of physiological systems to ensure the transmission of genetics from generation to generation. The

Paternal germ line aging: DNA methylation age prediction from human sperm.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between aging and epigenetic profiles has been highlighted in many recent studies. Models using somatic cell methylomes to predict age have been successfully constructed. However, gamete aging is quite distinct and as such age prediction using sperm methylomes is ineffective with current techniques. RESULTS: We have produced a model that utilizes human sperm DNA methylation signatures to predict chronological age by utilizing methylation array data from a total of 329 samples. The dataset used for model construction includes infertile patients, sperm donors, and i

Paternal race/ethnicity and risk of adverse birth outcomes in the United States, 1989-2013.

OBJECTIVES: Investigate adverse birth outcomes in the United States (US) from 1989-2013 in relation to paternal and maternal race/ethnicity. DESIGN: We used US natality data for singleton births to women 15-44 with information on birthweight, gestational age, and covariates (n = 90,771,339). We calculated unadjusted and adjusted probabilities of preterm birth (PTB, < 37 weeks gestation) and small for gestational age (SGA, < 10th percentile) among all combinations of maternal and paternal race/ethnicity: non-Hispanic black (NHB), non-Hispanic white (NHW), Hispanic, and Asian, and where paterna

Study of patterns of inheritance of premature ovarian failure syndrome carrying maternal and paternal premutations.

BACKGROUND: Premature ovarian failure / primary ovarian insufficiency (POF/POI) associated with the mutations of the FMR1 (Fragile-X Mental Retardation 1) gene belongs to the group of the so-called trinucleotide expansion diseases. Our aim was to analyse the relationship between the paternally inherited premutation (PIP) and the maternally inherited premutation (MIP) by the examination of the family members of women with POF, carrying the premutation allele confirmed by molecular genetic testing. METHODS: Molecular genetic testing was performed in the patients of the 1st Department of Obstetr

Diagnosis of Atelosteogenesis Type I suggested by Fetal Ultrasonography and Atypical Paternal Phenotype with Mosaicism.

Atelosteogenesis type I (AOI) is an autosomal dominant skeletal dysplasia caused by mutations in the filaminB (FLNB) gene with classic and well-recognizable clinical findings. However, parents affected with a mild phenotype, probably with somatic mosaicism, can generate offspring with a much more severe phenotype of AOI. In the present report, we describe a female newborn with classic AOI leading to early neonatal death, whose diagnostic was based on prenatal radiological findings and on the physical examination of the father. Since her father had limb deformities and corporal asymmetry, sugge

Noninvasive paternal exclusion testing for cystic fibrosis in the first five to eight weeks of gestation.

Prenatal genetic testing is not generally applicable to the very early stages of pregnancy (prior to week 8 gestation), a time period that is crucial to pregnant couples with high risk for transmission of genetic disease to their fetus. Therefore, we developed a new ultra-sensitive targeted next generation sequencing method for noninvasive haplotype-based paternal allele exclusion testing of the cystic fibrosis-associated gene, CFTR. This new method was compared to a conventional library prep and sequencing analysis method and all test results were validated by amniotic fluid testing at later

Placenta-mediated pregnancy complications are not associated with fetal or paternal factor V Leiden mutation.

OBJECTIVE: Maternal thrombophilia is a risk factor for adverse pregnancy outcomes. The aim of this study was to elucidate the controversial role of fetal and paternal thrombophilia in the development of severe placenta-mediated pregnancy complications. STUDY DESIGN: The study group comprised 126 mothers, 72 fetuses and 58 fathers. 111 mothers, 50 fetuses and 91 fathers acted as controls. 106 couples were selected to study the thrombophilias of paternal inheritance, 58 from the study group and 48 from the control group. The prevalence of factor V Leiden mutation, prothrombin G20210 A mutation

A paternal methyl donor-rich diet altered cognitive and neural functions in offspring mice.

Dietary intake of methyl donors, such as folic acid and methionine, shows considerable intra-individual variation in human populations. While it is recognized that maternal departures from the optimum of dietary methyl donor intake can increase the risk for mental health issues and neurological disorders in offspring, it has not been explored whether paternal dietary methyl donor intake influences behavioral and cognitive functions in the next generation. Here, we report that elevated paternal dietary methyl donor intake in a mouse model, transiently applied prior to mating, resulted in offspr

Paternal Risk Factors for Oral Clefts in Northern Africans, Southeast Asians, and Central Americans.

While several studies have investigated maternal exposures as risk factors for oral clefts, few have examined paternal factors. We conducted an international multi-centered case-control study to better understand paternal risk exposures for oral clefts (cases = 392 and controls = 234). Participants were recruited from local hospitals and oral cleft repair surgical missions in Vietnam, the Philippines, Honduras, and Morocco. Questionnaires were administered to fathers and mothers separately to elicit risk factor and family history data. Associations between paternal exposures and risk of clefts

Paternal involvement and support and risk of preterm birth: findings from the Boston birth cohort.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate to what extent paternal involvement and support during pregnancy were associated with preterm (PTB) and small-for-gestational age (SGA) births. METHODS: Using data from the Boston Birth Cohort (n = 7047), multiple logistic regression models were performed to estimate the log odds of either PTB or SGA birth, with paternal involvement, paternal social support, and family and friend social support variables as the primary independent variables. RESULTS: About 10% of participating mothers reported their husbands not being involved or supportive during their pregnancies.

Paternal psychopathological risk and psychological functioning in children with eating disorders and Disruptive Behavior Disorder.

Several studies demonstrated that maternal psychopathological risk is related to child's maladjustment, but until recently research has relatively neglected fathers. Disruptive Behavior Disorder (DBD) and Eating disorders (ED) have a large prevalence during childhood but a few studies have focused on their association with paternal psychopathological risk. One-hundred and thirty-nine children and their fathers were recruited from pediatric hospitals and outpatient clinics and paired with a healthy control group (CG). Fathers were administered the SCL-90/R and the CBCL 6-18 to assess: 1) psycho

Paternal Age Is Not Associated With Pregnancy Outcomes After Single Thawed Euploid Blastocyst Transfer.

Although controversial, increasing paternal age has been shown to negatively affect assisted reproductive technology (ART) outcomes and success rates. Most studies investigating the effect of paternal age on ART outcomes use a donor oocyte model to minimize maternal aneuploidy contribution. This study sought to determine whether increasing paternal age is associated with adverse in vitro fertilization (IVF) outcomes when aneuploidy is minimized using preimplantation genetic screening. There were 573 single thawed euploid embryo transfers from 473 patients undergoing oocyte donor and autologous
