RATIONALE: Central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) sparing the cilioretinal artery (CLRA) with severe subretinal fluid and non-characteristic cherry-red spot is uncommon. In the present case, the patient received an intravitreal injection of anti- vascular endothelial growth factor, which is very rare.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 59-year-old man underwent vitrectomy of the left eye for diabetic retinopathy and vitreous hemorrhage. Six months after the operation, the patient presented with sudden painless visual-acuity decline in his left eye and was diagnosed with CRAO; his best corrected visual acui

BACKGROUND: Keratolysis is a rare severe complication following systemic autoimmunologic diseases. Despite of complex therapeutic treatments, the prognosis is very poor.
PATIENTS: Ten eyes from seven patients with corneal ulcers were reported (age 45 - 73 years, mean 63 years; 6 women, 1 man). The corneal ulcer was perforated in 7 eyes. Five patients suffered from rheumatoid arthritis, and one patient developed a Sjögren's syndrome. Besides, one patient had shown both autoimmunologic diseases. After clinical attendance, visual acuity in the eyes with nonperforated ulcers was between 0.1 and 0

A 40-year-old man presented with painless sudden visual loss due to a central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) in his right eye. Three months later, he had painless acute visual loss in his left eye with visual acuity of 20/100 and a swollen optic disc. After oral prednisone treatment, the disc swelling resolved and acuity recovered to 20/20. Five months later, the patient experienced another episode of vision loss in the left eye associated with optic disc edema. With steroid therapy, he regained 20/20 acuity once again. With a history of recurrent oral ulcers, fluorescein angiography showing

Hypotony maculopathy, a clinical syndrome consisting of choroidal folds, retinal folds, and optic disc edema, results from severe, chronically decreased intraocular pressure (IOP). Conventional therapy consists of procedures designed to normalize the IOP. We treated a patient who developed hypotony maculopathy following trabeculectomy with mitomycin C. Despite normalization of the IOP with bleb revision, neither the posterior segment architecture nor visual acuity improved. Vitrectomy with mechanical flattening of the posterior segment via intraoperative instillation of perfluorocarbon liquid

BACKGROUND: We report two cases of enhanced S-cone syndrome (ESCS), one in a patient observed for 20 years since age 31 and the other in an elderly patient with ESCS who underwent cataract surgery.
CASE REPORT: Case 1. A 31-year-old man complained of night blindness and decreased vision. At the initial visit, his corrected visual acuity was 0.7 OD and 0.3 OS. Funduscopy revealed retinal degeneration near the vascular arcade and cystic change in the macular area in both eyes. It was diagnosed as ESCS by electroretinogram (ERG) findings. During a 20-year observation, the cystic change in the ma

INTRODUCTION: Visual hallucinosis occurs frequently amongst patients with dementia and there is some evidence of an association between hallucinosis and impaired visual function. This study examined the association between objectively rated visual acuity, ambient illumination levels and hallucinosis in patients with dementia.
METHODS: Thirty dementia patients with visual hallucinosis plus 30 non-hallucinating dementia patients were recruited from referrals to community mental health teams in Leicestershire. Data were collected by means of a carer interview (including the Neuro-Psychiatric Inv

The aim of this study was to analyze ocular manifestations, their complications, and treatment in a sample of 40 patients with confirmed Behcet's disease. Results. Serofibrinous iridocyclitis was the most common form of uveitis (60%). Retinal periphlebitis manifested in 92.5% of cases, and periphlebitis in conjunction with periarteritis was diagnosed in 72.5% of cases. Macular edema was the most frequent complication on the posterior segment (60%) and it correlated with periphlebitis (P = 0.45) and periphlebitis associated with periarteritis (P = 0.51). Cyclosporine A and corticosteroids were

Laser interferometer was used for the detection of interferometric acuity before and after membranous cataract disruption by Q--switched Nd: YAG laser in 23 patients (23 eyes). There was no significant difference between the interferometric acuity before and after laser surgery (p < 0.05). The postoperative corrected acuity was related positively to the preoperative one (p < 0.05). 65.2% of the eyes had a postoperative corrected acuity better than the postoperative interferometric acuity. These results show that laser interferometric acuity is a valuable method in the evaluation of postoperati

The authors assessed relationships between visual acuity and the amplitude, frequency, intensity, and duration of foveation periods in a retrospective study of 32 patients. Twenty-four patients had congenital idiopathic nystagmus, and eight patients had nystagmus and albinism. Visual acuity was determined for Landolt ring optotypes and, as the extrapolated high-frequency cutoff of the contrast sensitivity function, for horizontal and vertical gratings. No significant correlation existed between acuity and any measured eye movement parameter; however, optotype acuity was related to the magnitud

PURPOSE: Corneal neovascularization (CNV) is thought to negatively influence visual acuity. New therapeutic options that offer a differentiated influence on the ingrowths or regression of either corneal blood or lymphatic vessels force us to re-evaluate the association between CNV and visual acuity.
METHODS: A systematic review was conducted. Electronic databases were searched up to August 2009. Given the heterogeneity in study populations, interventions and measures of association, we were unable to undertake meta-analysis. The association between CNV and visual acuity was reported descripti

To develop a method to estimate the cost per quality-adjusted life year (QALY) gained with cataract surgery using large patient registries.Four centers in Sweden. Five hundred patients scheduled for cataract extraction in 1 eye at 1 of 4 centers in Sweden during March 1999 were asked to complete the EQ-5D, a preference-based quality-of-life instrument, and the Catquest, a disease-specific disability measure, before surgery. Multiple regression analysis was used to study the correlation between utility and visual acuity and/or disability and utility and QALY gain through the intervention estima

Invasive fungal sinusitis (IFS) is rare but potentially fatal in immunocompromised patients. Orbital extension of IFS can cause visual loss or ophthalmoplegia, and the rate of recovery of visual acuity can be low even after treatment with antifungal agents and sinus surgery. In this case, optic nerve decompression with the endoscopic endonasal approach was successful for the treatment of visual loss in a patient with IFS with orbital apex extension. The authors describe the recovery of visual acuity after optic nerve decompression in a patient with IFS who had exhibited visual loss caused by i

Congenital optic nerve abnormalities may rarely cause choroidal neovascularization (CNV). This case report summarizes the clinical and therapeutic outcomes of a 7-year-old boy with unilateral CNV secondary to morning glory syndrome associated with acute visual acuity loss. The patient was successfully treated with a single intravitreal ranibizumab injection. One month after the injection the visual acuity increased and optic coherence tomography (OCT) showed a decrease in the intraretinal fluid around the CNV. The patient was then called for monthly follow-up visits. No further treatment was n
