Relationship between patient satisfaction and objective functional outcome after surgical treatment for distal radius fractures.

STUDY DESIGN: Prospective cohort. INTRODUCTION: Patient satisfaction is increasingly used as a metric of health care outcomes. The relationship between patient satisfaction and functional outcomes metrics is understudied. PURPOSE: To determine the minimum recovery needed in grip strength, key pinch strength, and arc of motion needed for patient satisfaction after treatment of distal radius fracture (DRF) with volar locking plating system placement. METHODS: A prospective cohort of 125 DRF patients was evaluated three months after surgery for grip strength, key pinch strength, wrist arc of m…

Loss of external rotation after open Bankart repair: an important prognostic factor for patient satisfaction.

The repair of the capsuloligamentous complex during shoulder stabilisation procedures can be followed by a persistent restricted capacity of external rotation. The prognostic importance of this loss in external rotation for patient satisfaction has not previously been evaluated. We therefore followed 68 consecutive patients operated for recurrent traumatic unidirectional anterior instability of the glenohumeral joint to assess the association between loss of external rotation and patient satisfaction. All patients underwent open Bankart repair. Two independent observers carried out a follow-up…

Effects of short-term risedronate on bone resorption and patient satisfaction in postmenopausal osteoporosis patients.

This multicenter, open-label study evaluated the effects of short-term risedronate on bone resorption and patient satisfaction in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis in Brazil. Entry requirements included: osteoporosis of the spine/femoral neck diagnosed by a bone mineral density (BMD) T-score<or=-2.5 or radiographic fragility fracture within the last year and no treatment with osteoporosis medication in the preceding 3 mo. Patients were treated with once weekly risedronate of 35 mg for 12 wk. Patients also received 1000 mg calcium carbonate and 400 IU vitamin D. The main outcome was the ef…

Patient satisfaction with nurse-led telephone follow-up in women with lower urinary tract symptoms.

We assessed the clinical effectiveness and patient satisfaction with nurse-led telephone follow-up of women with lower urinary tract symptoms. Participants were offered telephone follow-up with a nurse instead of a conventional outpatient appointment. Suitability was decided by the doctor who saw the women at her last visit. The consultation was conducted using the same principles as a routine clinic visit. Patient satisfaction was evaluated by postal questionnaire and they were also sent a standard urinary continence questionnaire, the Kings Health Questionnaire (KHQ), to evaluate their curre…

"Instant vision" compared with postoperative patching: clinical evaluation and patient satisfaction after bilateral cataract surgery.

PURPOSE: To compare two methods of postoperative dressing regimen: patching vs "instant vision" without patch. DESIGN: Prospective randomized clinical trial. METHODS: Sixty consecutive hospitalized, nonambulatory patients with cataract surgery under topical anesthesia on both eyes at different days were enrolled prospectively. In randomized order, one eye was patched for the first 24 hours postoperatively; the other eye was left open without patch to obtain "instant vision." Both eyes received the same anti-inflammatory and antibiotic drop therapy. RESULTS: Twenty-four hours postoperatively

The course of cervical dystonia and patient satisfaction with long-term botulinum toxin A treatment.

In 78 patients with idiopathic cervical dystonia (CD), we studied the course of the disease and the patients' satisfaction with long-term botulinum toxin A (BTX) treatment (median 5.5 years, range 1.5-10). On a seven-point scale ranging from excellent to worsening, the effect of treatment was scored as excellent or good by 52% of patients and moderate by 33%. The independent scores of the treating neurologists were excellent or good in 65% and moderate in 27%, respectively, and correlated well with the patients' scores. The 'Global Burden of Disease', as expressed on Visual Analog Scales (VAS,

Photodynamic therapy for Barrett's esophagus and high grade dysplasia: results of a patient satisfaction survey.

There are few data available describing the experience of patients who have undergone photodynamic therapy with porfimer sodium for Barrett's esophagus. We describe the results of a satisfaction survey reported by 16 of 18 patients (11 men, 5 women; median age 75 years; median response at 27 months after treatment) treated with photodynamic therapy for Barrett's esophagus with high-grade dysplasia. Treatments were performed on an outpatient basis although two patients required clinic visits for intravenous fluids. Subjects reported their most significant post-treatment problem was odynophagia

Suction lipoplasty: a report on complications, undesired results, and patient satisfaction based on 3511 procedures.

Suction lipoplasty comprising 3511 procedures in 2009 patients was followed up prospectively for 6 to 12 months over a 5-year period. Eighty-eight percent of the procedures led to patient satisfaction and 3.4 percent led to dissatisfaction. Males were more dissatisfied than females. No mortality, deep thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, hypotension, or respiratory distress (fat emboli syndrome) was registered. Excessive bleeding and complications from anesthesia were the most common general complications. No hematoma, skin slough, or damage to adjacent organs occurred. Hypertrophic scarring and sk…

How Minimal Clinically Important Difference and Patient Acceptable Symptom State Relate to Patient Expectations and Satisfaction in Spine Surgery: A Review.

This narrative review seeks to enhance our comprehension of how Minimal Clinically Important Difference (MCID) and Patient Acceptable Symptom State (PASS) values in established Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) for spine surgery correspond with patient preoperative expectations and postoperative satisfaction. Through our literature search, we found that both MCID and PASS serve as dependable indicators of patient expectations. However, MCID may be more susceptible to a floor effect. This implies that PASS may offer a more accurate reflection of how patients anticipate surgery to addres

If patients had a choice - Treatment satisfaction and patients' preference in therapy of actinic keratoses.

BACKGROUND: Actinic keratoses (AK) are increasing in incidence and represent the most common (pre-)cancerous lesion in the fair-skinned population, with a high unmet medical need. In order to increase treatment adherence, it is very important to assess patients' therapy-related evaluations of different treatment options. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 100 patients with AK who were treated with at least two different treatment options were included. They rated their therapies using the Treatment Satisfaction Questionnaire for Medication (TSQM, maximum 100 points per category) and a Likert scale (LS, 1
