Exploring well-being services from the perspective of people with SCI: A scoping review of qualitative research.

OBJECTIVE: Well-being after spinal cord injury is affected by a range of factors, many of which are within the influence of rehabilitation services. Although improving well-being is a key aim of rehabilitation, the literature does not provide a clear path to service providers who seek to improve well-being. This study aimed to inform service design by identifying the experience and perspective of people with SCI about interventions targeting their well-being. METHOD: The scoping review of qualitative literature used thematic analysis to identify and categorize themes related to service activi

The Effectiveness of Peer Support on Self-Management and Psychosocial Outcomes in Maintenance Hemodialysis Patients: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis frequently encounter a substantial psychosocial burden, yet conventional care frequently lacks the capacity to deliver comprehensive, sustained psychosocial support due to limitations in resources. Nurse-led peer support, which integrates professional expertise with the lived experience of peers, presents a promising complementary model; however, its consolidated efficacy in this population lacks rigorous synthesis. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effects of nurse-led peer support on self-mana

Fostering accurate HIV/AIDS knowledge among unmarried youths in Cameroon: do family environment and peers matter?

BACKGROUND: The last three decades have seen a series of HIV interventions in sub-Saharan Africa. However, youths still have a mixture of co … eed that policymakers work together with families to improve the efficiency of these interventions. Peer influences is likely controversial because of the double positive effect of peer-to-peer communication on both accurate and inaccurate knowledge of HIV transmission routes.

Personality Traits, Learned Beliefs, and Alcohol-Related Behaviors Among Chinese University Students: The Mediating Role of Alcohol Expectancies and Drinking Refusal Self-Efficacy.

Background: Risky alcohol use among Chinese university students remains a public health concern. However, little is known about how personality traits and learned alcohol-related beliefs are associated with alcohol-related behaviors. This study examined associations of reward and punishment sensitivity, alcohol expectancies, and drinking refusal self-efficacy with drinking frequency, high-risk drinking, and self-protective behaviors. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among N = 800 university students in China. Separate path models were estimated, with each model corresponding to

Assessment of the influential mechanisms of adolescent risk behaviors and protective and risk factors among high school students in Finnmark, Arctic Norway.

Adolescent risk behaviors, including alcohol use and antisocial behaviors, remain a public health concern in Finnmark, Arctic Norway. However, the mechanisms linking risk and protective factors to these behaviors remain underexplored. This study examines the influence of individual and environmental factors-such as family, peers, school, and local contexts-on adolescent alcohol use and antisocial behaviors. Using data from the 2021 Ungdata survey (N = 2,129 high school students), Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling was applied to identify key associations. The results indicate t

Severity of Congenital Heart Defects Affects Long-Term Somatic Development.

Treatment options and therefore general health in children with congenital heart defects (CHD) improved tremendously over the last decades. Growth is an important marker to evaluate healthy development, especially in patients with chronic diseases. This study aimed to evaluate growth in children with CHD compared to their healthy peers. A retrospective, longitudinal analysis of standardized measurements of height, weight, and head circumference of children with CHD aged 0 to 18 years (n = 18,591) was conducted based on data provided by the German pediatrician network CrescNet. These data were

Hearing Early Opens More Doors: Long-Term Effects of Age at Implantation on Metaphor Comprehension in Adolescents and Young Adults With Cochlear Implants.

PURPOSE: There is solid evidence that an early age at cochlear implantation, which reduces the period of auditory deprivation, positively impacts early spoken language development. However, there is an urgent need for more research to understand the long-term effects of early implantation on higher linguistic skills, such as metaphor comprehension. In this study, we explored metaphor comprehension in Swedish-speaking adolescents and young adults with cochlear implant (CI), compared to that of typically hearing peers, as well as its relationship with the age at first CI. METHOD: The participan

Attitudes towards Peers with Disabilities among Schoolchildren in Physical Education Classes.

All children, including those living with disabilities, have the right to be provided with Inclusive Education (IE) together with appropriate support in scholarly settings. A key factor for educational inclusion is peers' attitudes towards disabilities, which impact disabled students' social participation and learning. Physical Education (PE) classes represent an opportunity for students with disabilities to get psychological, social, health, and educational benefits. This study aimed to assess Spanish students' attitudes regarding their peers with disabilities during PE lessons and to explore

Role of social context in addiction etiology and recovery.

While social context has long been considered central to substance use disorder prevention and treatment and many drug-taking events occur in social settings, experimental research on social context has historically been limited. Recent years have seen an emergence of concerted preclinical and human laboratory research documenting the direct impact of social context on substance use, delineating behavioral and neurobiological mechanisms underlying social influence's role. We review this emerging preclinical and human laboratory literature from a theoretical lens that considers distinct stages

Sex differences in socioemotional functioning, attentional bias, and gray matter volume in maltreated children: A multilevel investigation.

While maltreatment is known to impact social and emotional functioning, threat processing, and neural structure, the potentially dimorphic influence of sex on these outcomes remains relatively understudied. We investigated sex differences across these domains in a large community sample of children aged 10 to 14 years (n = 122) comprising 62 children with verified maltreatment experience and 60 well-matched nonmaltreated peers. The maltreated group relative to the nonmaltreated comparison group exhibited poorer social and emotional functioning (more peer problems and heightened emotional react

Communicative ability conceptions among children who stutter and their fluent peers: a qualitative exploration.

UNLABELLED: Meta issues in stuttering were examined by analyzing verbal-descriptive data drawn from structured interviews with 23 male children who stutter (CWS) and their 23 fluent male peers. Participants described others' "good" and "bad" talk behaviors and provided their self-appraisals as talkers. Analysis of interview transcripts suggested that CWS favored unidimensional criteria for describing others' talk behaviors, where others' speech-language forms, particularly allusions to stuttering behaviors, were noted most commonly in the descriptions. In contrast, children who did not stutter

Qualitative study of factors associated with antimicrobial usage in seven small animal veterinary practices in the UK.

Responsible use of antimicrobials by veterinarians is essential to contain antimicrobial resistance in pathogens relevant to public health. Inappropriate antimicrobial use has been previously described in practice. However, there is scarce information on factors influencing antimicrobial usage in dogs and cats. We investigated intrinsic and extrinsic factors influencing decision-making of antimicrobial usage in first opinion small animal practices in the UK through the application of qualitative research methods. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 21 veterinarians from seven veteri

The Research on Risk Factors for Adolescents' Mental Health.

There is a growing tendency for mental health disorders to emerge during adolescence. These disorders impair emotional, cognitive, and behavioral functioning, such as unsatisfying peer relationships, disruptive behavior, and decreased academic performance. They also contribute to vulnerability in later adulthood which negatively influences life-long well-being. Thus, research into etiology is imperative to provide implications for prevention and intervention within family and school practices. It is suggested that the onset of psychological disorders, such as depression and anxiety, is closely

Peer support in health care and prevention: cultural, organizational, and dissemination issues.

As reviewed in the article by Perry and colleagues (2014) in this volume, ample evidence has documented the contributions of peer support (PS) to health, health care, and prevention. Building on that foundation, this article discusses characteristics, contexts, and dissemination of PS, including (a) fundamental aspects of the social support that is often central to it; (b) cultural influences and ways PS can be tailored to specific groups; (c) key features of PS and the importance of ongoing support and backup of peer supporters and other factors related to its success; (d) directions in which

Influence of sex and gender on depression-related healthcare utilisation following traumatic brain injury sustained during childhood and adolescence: protocol for a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Depression is a prevalent mental health condition often occurring after traumatic brain injury (TBI) in both children and adults. Sex, gender and other social determinants of health (SDoH) (e.g., race/ethnicity or socio-economic status) play an important role in depression-related and TBI-related healthcare utilisation (e.g., diagnosis, treatment and management of the conditions). Despite this, no reviews have examined how sex and gender, along with other SDoH, influence depression-related healthcare utilisation among individuals who sustained a TBI ≤19 years of age. The review's

The role of social relationships in recovery court programs.

BACKGROUND: Recovery courts offer an empirically supported alternative to incarceration for legally involved individuals struggling with addiction. While studies suggest that graduation from recovery courts leads to a lower likelihood of recidivism as compared to incarceration, attrition rates among recovery court participants are high. Relatively little is known about how court participants' social and family interactions affect progression through recovery court programs - information that could facilitate development of interventions to decrease court program attrition. METHODS: We used in
