There were 45 patients suffering from duodenal ulcer in the stage of exacerbation and 15 subjects who served as control. Radioimmunoassay and immunomorphological PAP methods were used to examine the blood PGI and gastrin levels, the number of gastroduodenal G and D cells, the characteristics of basal and stimulated acid production in gastric juice in the treatment with gastrozepin (22 persons) and ranisen (23 persons). Depending on the concentration of gastrin in the blood and the number of pyloric G cells, the patients were distributed into two groups: with hypergastrinemia and/or hyperplasia

Cobalamin (vitamin B12) deficiency is more common in the elderly than in younger patients. This is because of the increased prevalence of co … nd gender. Atrophic body gastritis is indirectly diagnosed by measuring serum levels of gastrin and pepsinogens, and it may cause dietary cobalamin malabsorption despite a normal traditional Schilling's test. The use of gastroscopy may also be considered to diagnose dysplasia, bacterial overgrowth and intestinal villous atrophy in healthy patients with atroph …

BACKGROUND/AIM: Prompted by the increasing demand of non-invasive diagnostic tools for screening of gastric cancer (GC) risk conditions, i.e., atrophic gastritis (AG) and Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection, the GastroPanel® test (GP: biomarker panel of PGI, PGII, G-17, Hp IgG ELISA) that was developed in the early 2000's, was recently updated to a new-generation (unified GP) test version. This clinical validation study evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of the new-generation GP test in detection of AG and Hp among gastroscopy referral patients in a University Clinic.

Juvenile patients affected with autoimmune thyroid disorders showed a 14-21% prevalence of parietal cell antibodies (PCA) reacting against the H+/K+-ATPase of the gastric parietal cells. PCA are the principal immunological markers of atrophic body gastritis (ABG).ABG is characterized by loss of oxyntic glands, achlorhydria, and hypergastrinemia. The aim of this study was to determine whether PCA positivity could be associated with biochemical and histological manifestations of gastric autoimmunity in juvenile patients with autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD). We studied 129 children (96 females

We conducted a prospective study to evaluate the relationship between Helicobacter pylori infection and chronic gastritis in a Japanese population. H. pylori was found in 67% of patients positive for mononuclear cell (MN cell) infiltration and in 75.8% of patients positive for polymorphonuclear cell (PMN cell) infiltration, whereas H. pylori was found in 14.2% of patients without MN cell infiltration and in 33.2% of patients without PMN cell infiltration. The frequency of MN and PMN cell infiltration in H. pylori-positive patients was significantly higher than that in H. pylori-negative patien

The aim of this study is to clarify the relationship between Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection and gastric carcinoma. 94 patients with gastric carcinoma and 111 patients with chronic gastritis were involved in this study. They were classified into 3 age groups: Group A (40 years and under), Group B (41-59), Group C (60 years and over). Serum samples were tested for H. pylori IgG antibodies by ELISA and for pepsinogen (PG) by RIA. The ratio of PG I/PG II was used as a marker for atrophic gastritis. Results were as follows. In the incidence of H. pylori antibodies, there was no significa

Dietary fiber (DF) consists of non-starch polysaccharides (NSPs) and lignin, and is categorized into soluble and insoluble DF. DF is often regarded as an antinutritional element; however, the intake of both soluble and insoluble fiber can induce physiological alterations in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). These adaptations include increased synthesis and secretion of digestive enzymes, altered gastrointestinal motility and development, improved gizzard functionality, and the proliferation of intestinal and caecal microbiota. The induced adaptations interfere with the digestibility of energy

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection causes a progression to atrophic gastritis and results in gastric cancer. Cytotoxin-associated gene A (CagA), a major virulence factor of H. pylori, is injected into gastric epithelial cells using the type IV secretion system. On the other hand, gastric epithelial cells degrade CagA using an autophagy system, which is strictly regulated by the autophagy-related (ATG) genes. This study aimed to identify SNPs in ATG5, ATG10, ATG12, and ATG16L1 associated with gastric mucosal atrophy (GMA). Here, two-hundred H. pylori-positive participants without gastric

The alimentary tract of oxudercine gobies is characterized by a lack of an anatomically distinct stomach, owing to which they are classified as stomachless. Since the environment, food requirements, and feeding habits have a significant impact on the anatomy of the alimentary tract of fish, it was assumed that predominantly carnivorous, semi-terrestrial mudskippers would have a stomach. In order to verify this hypothesis, anatomical, histological, histochemical and ultrastructural analysis of the alimentary tract of the Atlantic mudskipper Periophthalmus barbarus was performed. The results rev

BACKGROUND: The Updated Sydney System (USS) is used to evaluate chronic gastritis and chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG) due to H. pylori infection. Here, we investigated USS scores and gastric juice pH levels in H. pylori infection-positive or -eradicated patients with remnant stomach after surgery.
METHODS: Gastric juice pH levels were measured using pH test-tape in 197 patients (112 H. pylori-positive and 85 H. pylori-negative after eradication) who had undergone distal gastrectomy and conventional H. pylori eradication therapy.
RESULTS: In H. pylori infection-positive remnant stomach cases

BACKGROUND: Pernicious anemia (PA), as many other autoimmune disorders, has a trend to appear in other members of the family of the affected patients. Although this fact has been recognized since some decades ago, less is known about the frequency with which the abnormalities detected in the patients appear also in their relatives, the correlations that exist among these abnormalities and to what extent these markers of the disease relate to serum cobalamin concentration.
SUBJECTS AND RESULTS: For these reasons we studied the values of some markers of PA in a group of 79 first-degree relative

This study used mucin immunohistochemistry to investigate differences in the properties of intestinal metaplasia between the antrum and body of the stomach in 28 resected specimens. Intestinal metaplasia was classified as: (1) small intestinal metaplasia (SIM) with a tubule, including CD10-positive brush border on a background of MUC5AC-/ HGM-negative cells; or (2) goblet cell metaplasia (GCM) with MUC2-positive and CD10-negative cells. In the antrum, frequencies of SIM and GCM were nearly equal irrespective of metaplasia grade. Frequency and length of remnant pyloric gland for SIM were signif

A relationship between allergic diseases and Helicobacter pylori infection has recently been noted. We report a case of atopic dermatitis and H. pylori infection in a 14-year-old girl. She had had widespread diffuse skin erythema with erosions and pigmentation since the age of 3 years. Endoscopically, there was chronic antral gastritis with H. pylori infection and histological eosinophilic infiltration. A high titer of H. pylori-specific IgG was present in serum. She was treated with a proton pump inhibitor (lansoprazole 60 mg), an antibiotic (clarithromycin 800 mg), and plaunotol (a mucosal p

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Transforming growth factor (TGF) alpha affects the growth of gastric mucosa. Its overexpression alters the mucosa. The aim of this study was to test the possibility that it regulates differentiation of gland cells.
METHODS: Transgenic mice that overexpress TGF-alpha were used to detect its effect on zymogenic (chief) cells in the stomach. To test for a general regulatory role of TGF-alpha in differentiation of zymogen-producing cells, salivary glands from transgenic mice were studied.
RESULTS: In these mice, messenger RNA for pepsinogen C is present in the stomach at normal

To evaluate endogenous and exogenous factors affecting the quality of ulcer healing produced by proton pump inhibitors, gastric acid pH, serum gastrin, and serum pepsinogen (PG) I and II were measured in peptic ulcer patients before and after treatment with lansoprazole 30 mg once daily. Lansoprazole achieved more rapid scarring in duodenal ulcer (n = 34), with a healing rate of 97.1% after 6 weeks, than in gastric ulcer (n = 56), with a healing rate of 92.8% after 8 weeks. Scarring was the most rapid in gastroduodenal ulcer (n = 8), with a healing rate of 100% after 8 weeks, but the rate of c

Gastric involvement was investigated in twenty Italian patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS). Gastric complaints were present in 11 cases (55%) and endoscopic abnormalities in 10 (50%) including 2 cases with active duodenal ulcer. Only two patients (10%) showed moderate chronic atrophic gastritis (AG), while most (85%) had superficial gastritis (SG). No correlations were found among endoscopy, histology and gastric symptoms. Mean serum group I pepsinogen (PG I) levels were significantly higher (p < 0.01) and PG I concentrations in the fundus of the stomach were significantly lower (p

As digestive endoscopy becomes more prevalent, an increasing number of autoimmune gastritis (AIG) cases have been diagnosed, which has contributed to a growing body of research on AIG. We report the case of a patient with AIG who was diagnosed due to receiving endoscopic surgery after discovering a gastric neuroendocrine tumor (GNET) during gastroscopy twice within 3 years. The patient was admitted to our hospital for endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) due to GNET recurrence discovered during gastroscopy. The patient had previously undergone ESD due to a GNET discovered during gastroscopy

Gastric adenocarcinoma of the fundic gland type (GA-FG) is a rare gastric neoplasm. We present a unique case of multiple GA-FG that coexisted with the well-differentiated neuroendocrine tumors in a patient with autoimmune gastritis. To our knowledge, this is the first documented instance of such a co-occurrence and the molecular mechanism of their origin has been reviewed systematically. A 47-year-old male presented to our hospital with abdominal distension for over 10 years. Gastroscopy revealed multiple gastric eminence lesions (0.2-1.5 cm). After endoscopic mucosal resection, the pathologic

Gastric atrophy results in lower plasma ghrelin, higher gastrin secretion, a change in gut microbiota, and altered dietary nutrient absorption, which may be associated with the incidence of diabetes. Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is a major cause of gastric atrophy and is associated with diabetes in some reports. Since there is no study which investigates the impact of gastric atrophy on diabetes, we conduct a prospective cohort study to examine the relationship between H. pylori infection, gastric atrophy, and incident diabetes. In this study, subjects with gastric atrophy had a l

Patients with Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) have an increased prevalence of associated organ-specific autoimmune diseases such as pernicious anemia whose histological substrate is a chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG). Latent pernicious anemia precedes clinically-manifest pernicious anemia and may be difficult to detect solely on simple analytical grounds. We recently described an increased prevalence of clinically-latent pernicious anemia in T1D using low concentrations of pepsinogen I, a zymogen of pepsin present in gastric mucosa, as a useful additional diagnostic marker, besides parietal cel
