OBJECTIVE: To implement a fast method for measuring psychophysical tuning curves (PTCs) for use in clinical applications, such as assessment of frequency selectivity and detection of dead regions in the cochlea.
DESIGN: The method is based on that described by Sek et al (2005) and has been implemented in software that can be run on a PC with a good-quality sound card. In addition to the main narrowband noise masker, a lowpass noise masker can be generated to prevent detection of a distortion band corresponding to the simple difference tone.
RESULTS: The software includes a routine for measur

The aim of the present study was to determine inter-aural attenuation (IA) values for pure tones and a broadband click obtained using an ER-3A insert earphone with a foam plug and with a customized hard acrylic earmould. Participants were 15 adults with a longstanding unilateral dead ear. IA was operationally defined as the difference between the good-ear and poorer-ear not-masked air conduction threshold. Minimum IA values for the foam earplug were 50 dB and 55 dB for pure tones and broadband click, respectively. Minimum IA values for the hard acrylic earmould were 45 dB and 50 dB for pure to

The present study investigated the role of sensory feedback (auditory, proprioception, and tactile) at the intra- and inter-gestural levels of speech motor coordination in normal and fast speech rate conditions in two groups: (1) persons who stutter (PWS) and (2) those who do not (PNS). Feedback perturbations were carried out with the use of masking noise (auditory), tendon vibration (proprioception), and nonwords that differed in the amount of required tactile lip contact (/api/+tactile and /awi/-tactile). Comparisons were also made between jaw-free and jaw-immobilized (with a bite-block) tas

In order to examine the neuropsychological effects of hostility on emotional and pain processing, auditory emotion perception before and after cold pressor pain in high and low hostile men was examined. Additionally, quantitative electroencephalography (QEEG) was recorded between each experimental manipulation. Results indicated that identification of emotion post cold pressor differed as a function of hostility level and ear. Primary QEEG findings indicated increased left temporal activation after cold pressor exposure and increased reactivity to cold pressor pain in the high hostile group. L

BACKGROUND: The "gate control" theory suggests pain can be reduced by simultaneous activation of nerve fibres that conduct non-noxious stimuli. This study investigated the effects of vibration stimuli on pain experienced during local anaesthetic injections.
METHODS: In a preliminary study, subjects were asked to rate anticipated and actual pain from regional anaesthetic injections in the oral cavity. A second study compared, within subjects, pain from injections with and without a simultaneous vibration stimulus. Both infiltration and block anaesthetic injection techniques were assessed. In e

We investigated the top-down influence of working memory (WM) maintenance on feedforward perceptual processing within occipito-temporal face processing structures. During event-related potential (ERP) recordings, subjects performed a delayed-recognition task requiring WM maintenance of faces or houses. The face-sensitive N170 component elicited by delay-spanning task-irrelevant grayscale noise probes was examined. If early feedforward perceptual activity is biased by maintenance requirements, the N170 ERP component elicited by probes should have a greater N170 amplitude response during face re

Tone complexes with positive (m+) and negative (m-) Schroeder phase show large differences in masking efficiency. This study investigated whether the different phase characteristics also affect loudness. Loudness matches between m+ and m- complexes were measured as a function of (1) the fundamental frequency (f0) for different frequency bands in normal-hearing and hearing-impaired subjects, and (2) intensity level in normal-hearing subjects. In normal-hearing subjects, the level of the m+ stimulus was up to 10 dB higher than that of the corresponding m- stimulus at the point of equal loudness.

Hearing impairment may sometimes be associated with complete loss of inner hair cells (IHCs) over a certain region of the basilar membrane. We call this a 'dead region'. Amplification (using a hearing aid) over a frequency range corresponding to a dead region may not be beneficial and may even impair speech intelligibility. However, diagnosis of dead regions is not easily done from the audiogram. This paper reports the design and evaluation of a method for detecting and delimiting dead regions. A noise, called 'threshold equalizing noise' (TEN), was spectrally shaped so that, for normally hear

One of the many reported advantages of the insert earphone over the supra-aural earphone is increased inter-aural attenuation (IA). Minimum values of IA determine the need for masking of the non-test ear in air-conduction audiometry. The aim of the present study was to measure inter-aural attenuation for the Etymotic Research ER-3A insert earphone (with deep and shallow insertion of the ear plug within the ear canal) and compare this with the supra-aural Telephonics TDH-39/MX41-AR earphone/cushion combination. Subjects were 18 adults ranging in age from 38 to 68 years (mean 50 years). Each sub

The relationship between the acoustic reflex threshold (ART) and loudness was examined in patients with unilateral hearing losses and subjects with simulated hearing losses using a masking method. Significant differences in the ART between the two ears of patients with unilateral hearing losses were correlated with differences in loudness at the level of the ART with differences in loudness determined by the alternate binaural loudness balance test. A similar relationship of ART and the sensation of loudness was also observed in ears with simulated hearing losses. The results obtained in the p

Otoacoustic emission testing was carried out on 39 patients with confirmed acoustic neuromas, and satisfactory emissions were recorded from the neuroma ear of 59% of them. A comparison of the patients with and without emissions showed no significant differences in low-frequency or high-frequency hearing loss, optimum speech discrimination score, or canal paresis in the affected ear between the two groups. Emissions were recorded at stimulus rates up to 5,000 clicks/s by using the maximum length sequence (MLS) technique. The decrease in the emission amplitude with increase in click rate (rate s

This study attempted to develop a test which would be specific for endolymphatic hydrops. It is based upon the hypothesis that increased pressure in the scala media will alter the stiffness of the basilar membrane and hence increase the speed of the travelling wave. Auditory brainstem-derived responses were used to measure the basilar membrane travelling wave velocity in normals and to take the equivalent measures in Meniere's patients. Ten normally hearing subjects and 20 Meniere's patients were tested. The data for the Meniere's group showed that the travelling wave velocities were within no

In the last ten years the findings of most published research into binaural hearing aids are undoubtedly in favour of two hearing aids as opposed to one. This paper summarizes and discusses the findings of one of these researches and puts forward practical guidelines for the selection of binaural hearing aids. The research in question was carried out at the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research, University of Southampton, and it was supported by the Wates Foundation.

While school-aged children who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) spend much of the day in classrooms or playgrounds, little is known about how aspects of these environments, such as fast speech and background noise, affect their ability to process sentences in real time. The current study compared processing of sentences in 16-talker babble noise spoken at a fast (6.1 syll./s) vs normal (4.5 syll./s) speaking rates in twenty-seven 8-13-year-old children with hearing in the normal range (NH) and 31 DHH children. Children were instructed to detect a target word in a sentence, and response time (

PURPOSE: The R345W mutation in EFEMP1 causes malattia leventinese, an autosomal dominant eye disease with pathogenesis similar to an early-onset age-related macular degeneration. In mice, Efemp1R345W does not cause detectable degeneration but small subretinal deposits do accumulate. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there were abnormal responses to light at this presymptomatic stage in Efemp1R345W mice.
METHODS: Responses to light were assessed by visual water task, circadian phase shifting, and negative masking behavior. The mechanism of abnormal responses was investigated b

OBJECTIVES: Human immunodeficiency virus positive (HIV+) individuals report hearing difficulties, but standard audiological tests show no, or small, changes in peripheral hearing ability. The hearing complaints may reflect central nervous system (CNS) auditory processing deficits, rather than middle or inner ear problems, and may result from CNS damage due to HIV infection or treatment. If central auditory task performance and cognitive deficits in HIV+ individuals are shown to be related, then central auditory tests might serve as a "window" into CNS function in these patients.

The visual processing of emotional faces is subserved by both a cortical and a subcortical route. To investigate the specific contribution of these two functional pathways, two groups of neurologically healthy humans were tested using transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). In Experiment 1, participants received sham and active cathodal-inhibitory tDCS over the left occipital cortex, while, in control Experiment 2, participants received sham and active cathodal-inhibitory tDCS over the vertex, to exclude any unspecific effect of tDCS. After tDCS, participants performed a go/no-go task

OBJECTIVES: Recent research has demonstrated that pupil dilation, a measure of mental effort (cognitive processing load), is sensitive to differences in speech intelligibility. The present study extends this outcome by examining the effects of masker type and age on the speech reception threshold (SRT) and mental effort.
DESIGN: In young and middle-aged adults, pupil dilation was measured while they performed an SRT task, in which spoken sentences were presented in stationary noise, fluctuating noise, or together with a single-talker masker. The masker levels were adjusted to achieve 50% or 8

Recent auditory brain stem response measurements in tinnitus subjects with normal audiograms indicate the presence of hidden hearing loss that manifests as reduced neural output from the cochlea at high sound intensities, and results from mice suggest a link to deafferentation of auditory nerve fibers. As deafferentation would lead to deficits in hearing performance, the present study investigates whether tinnitus patients with normal hearing thresholds show impairment in intensity discrimination compared to an audiometrically matched control group. Intensity discrimination thresholds were sig
