A meta-analysis of mentalizing in anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive and related disorders, and trauma and stressor related disorders.

BACKGROUND: The number of studies that have researched the ability to mentalize in individuals with anxiety and related disorders is limited. Often, no distinction is made between different anxiety and related disorders in the examination of mentalization. OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to obtain insight into mentalization in anxiety and related disorders, and to compare this ability between these disorders. METHOD: A systematic literature search was performed to identify studies in which performance on a mentalization task was compared between a patient group diagnosed with an anxiet

The effect of comorbid substance use disorders on treatment outcome for anxiety disorders.

This study examined the impact of concurrent substance use disorders (SUDs) on outcomes for psychotherapy targeting anxiety disorders. Study … nic disorder or social phobia. Pre-treatment alcohol use did not predict changes in panic symptoms, performance anxiety, distress, or disability, but it did predict changes in social interaction anxiety. Problem drinking per se did not have any predictive utility in terms of treatment outcome. These findings suggest that clinicians treating patients for a primary anx …

Hippocampal magnetic resonance spectroscopy markers in late life anxiety - a preliminary report.

Severe worry and anxiety in late life are linked to increased risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD), but underlying neural mechanisms remain unclear. Severe worry is associated with reduced hippocampal volume. One proposed mechanism is stress-related glutamate excitotoxicity, which may contribute to hippocampal atrophy and cognitive decline. This pilot study examined whether anxiety, worry, and cognitive function are associated with markers of glutamate excitotoxicity, specifically hippocampal glutamate and N-acetyl aspartate (NAA). Eighteen older adults with varying worry underwent 7T magnetic res

[Anxiety and Generalized Anxiety Disorder in Elite Athletes].

Physical activity is recommended as a strategy for promoting mental health, and it can even be integrated into treatment plans for psychiatric disorders affecting the general population. However, elite athletes are a subpopulation with protective and risk factors inherent to high-level competition and are not shielded from psychiatric symptoms and conditions. The mental health of elite athletes has been the subject of increasing attention, driven in part by the initiatives of the International Olympic Committee and the growing importance of sports psychiatry. This article is a narrative review

The Relationship between Anxiety, Visual Function, and Symptomatology in University Students.

Mental health concerns have emerged at the university level, with the psychological well-being of students being increasingly affected. This cross-sectional study investigated the proportion of university students having anxiety, and its effects on their visual function and symptomatology. We included 41 students (26.1 ± 4.8 years), and their visual function was assessed through several tests to produce a general visual performance index (VPI). The visual symptomatology was studied using the Conlon Visual Discomfort Survey and the Quality of Vision (QoV) questionnaire. The students were classi

The Link between Activities of Hepatic 11beta-Hydroxysteroid Dehydrogenase-1 and Monoamine Oxidase-A in the Brain Following Repeated Predator Stress: Focus on Heightened Anxiety.

We investigated the presence of a molecular pathway from hepatic 11-βHSD-1 to brain MAO-A in the dynamics of plasma corticosterone involvement in anxiety development. During 14 days following repeated exposure of rats to predator scent stress for 10 days, the following variables were measured: hepatic 11-βHSD-1 and brain MAO-A activities, brain norepinephrine, plasma corticosterone concentrations, and anxiety, as reflected by performance on an elevated plus maze. Anxiety briefly decreased and then increased after stress exposure. This behavioral response correlated inversely with plasma cortic

Social anxiety symptoms, heart rate variability, and vocal emotion recognition in women: evidence for parasympathetically-mediated positivity bias.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Individuals with social anxiety disorder show pronounced perceptual biases in social contexts, such as being hypervigilant to threat and discounting positive social cues. Parasympathetic activity influences responses to the social environment and may underlie these biases. This study examined the associations among social anxiety symptoms, heart rate variability (HRV), and vocal emotion recognition. DESIGN AND METHOD: Female undergraduate students (N = 124) self-reported their social anxiety symptoms using the Social Anxiety Disorder Dimensional Scale and completed

Fear learning and generalization during pandemic fear: How COVID-19-related anxiety affects classical fear conditioning with traumatic film clips.

The COVID-19 pandemic greatly disrupted our daily lives. Worldwide, people were confronted with health, financial, and existential fears or trauma-like experiences. Recent studies have identified an increase in stress, anxiety, and fear symptoms in connection with the pandemic. Furthermore, fear learning processes are central mechanisms in the development and maintenance of anxiety disorders. Patients commonly show impairments not only in fear learning but also in its generalization. Thus, pandemic-related anxiety may constitute a risk factor for both enhanced fear acquisition and generalizati

Associations of employment status with social media addiction, anxiety, and parenting self-efficacy among mothers of infants: a cross-sectional study using machine learning.

BACKGROUND: Differences in social media addiction, anxiety, and parenting self-efficacy according to maternal employment status have important implications for maternal and child public health. However, evidence comparing these psychosocial outcomes between employed and non-employed mothers of infants remains limited, hindering the development of targeted maternal and child health interventions. This study compared social media addiction, anxiety, and parenting self-efficacy between employed and non-employed mothers and evaluated the performance of machine learning models for classifying emplo

Social Anxiety Disorder: Associated Conditions and Therapeutic Approaches.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a highly distressing chronic psychiatric disorder characterized by persistent fear of social situations in anticipation of being judged negatively by others. As shyness mimics some of the symptoms of SAD, people suffering from this debilitating disease are often underdiagnosed. It can have a devastating impact on all areas of life including academic performance, social growth, relationship status, and work performance. In recent years, research on anxiety and related disorders has proliferated due to the increased use of cognitive-behavioral models. The underst

The effect of a single-session attention modification program on response to a public-speaking challenge in socially anxious individuals.

Research suggests that individuals with social anxiety show an attention bias for threat-relevant information However, few studies have directly manipulated attention to examine its effect on anxiety. In the current article, the authors tested the hypothesis that an attention modification program would be effective in reducing anxiety response and improving performance on a public-speaking challenge. Socially anxious participants completed a probe detection task by identifying letters (E or F) replacing one member of a pair of faces (neutral or disgust). The authors trained attention by includ

Effects of sibutramine on anxiety-related behaviours in rats.

Sibutramine is an anorexiant drug that inhibits the reuptake of noradrenaline and serotonin, a pharmacological property shared with drugs clinically effective in treating anxiety pathologies. However, the effects of this compound on experimental and clinical anxiety have not been assessed yet. In this study, we evaluated the effects of sibutramine on anxiety-related behaviours which have been related to specific anxiety disorders. Acute injection of sibutramine (5, 10 or 20 mg kg(-1); intraperitoneally) in male Wistar rats impaired inhibitory avoidance in the elevated T-maze (ETM) and in the l

Effects of Chewing Gum on Nitric Oxide Metabolism, Markers of Cardiovascular Health and Neurocognitive Performance after a Nitrate-Rich Meal.

OBJECTIVES: Cardiovascular and neurocognitive responses to chewing gum have been reported, but the mechanisms are not well understood. Chewing gum after a nitrate-rich meal may upregulate the reduction of oral nitrate to nitrite and increase nitric oxide (NO), a molecule important to cardiovascular and neurocognitive health. We aimed to explore effects of chewing gum after a nitrate-rich meal on nitrate metabolism (through the enterosalivary nitrate-nitrite-NO pathway), endothelial function, blood pressure (BP), neurocognitive performance, mood and anxiety. METHODS: Twenty healthy men (n = 6)
