Hereditary Neuropathy with Liability to Pressure Palsy (HNPP) is a rare condition in childhood with a diverse range of clinical presentations. We analyzed the clinical presentation and electrophysiological data of 12 children with a confirmed PMP22 gene deletion and reviewed the published reports of HNPP in children and compared our data with the reports from the literature review. Peroneal palsy was the most common presentation (42%) followed by brachial plexus palsy in 25% of our cases. Nerve conduction studies were always suggestive of the diagnosis demonstrating 3 major patterns: multifoca

The lower-extremity vascular injuries and neuropathy are the most salient complications of diabetes which could lead to the poor prognosis, especially for the type II diabetes. The lower extremity vascular injuries and neuropathy usually coexist, yet their correlation in the pathogenesis of lower extremity lesions has received little attention in previous studies. To investigate the correlation between the degree of lower-extremity arterial injuries and lower-extremity neurological functional status in patients with type II diabetes, 32 patients with type II diabetes were examined for the mean

We report a case of mononeuropathy multiplex with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). A 78-year-old man developed patches of purpura on his left forearm. His platelet count was 11,000/microl and platelet-associated IgG was elevated. He was diagnosed as having ITP. At the beginning of the following month, he noticed dysesthesia and weakness of his left finger and left lower limb, as well as dysesthesia of his bilateral lower thighs. Neurological examination revealed weakness in the area of the left ulnar nerve and of the left anterior tibial muscle. Dysesthesia presented in the area of t

The description of the peroneal muscular atrophy syndrome in 1886 by Charcot, Marie and Tooth was followed by an era of nosological confusion. This was partly clarified by the advent of nerve conduction studies and the definition of the most common, but heterogeneous, disorders underlying this syndrome, hereditary motor and sensory neuropathies (HMSN) types I and II. The classification of HMSN is now changing as a result of the identification of underlying mutations in genes encoding myelin proteins. Abnormalities of peripheral myelin protein 22 (PMP-22) account for dominantly inherited HMSN t

OBJECTIVE: The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the correlation of large mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) deletions in skin samples of people with HIV (PWH) with measures of neuropathy and prior exposure to therapy. We hypothesized that deletions would be associated with neuropathy. As secondary objectives, we determined the correlation of deletion burden with demographic data and neuropathy measures.
METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, we measured the accumulation of large mtDNA deletions in skin biopsies from PWH recruited as part of the AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG). O

UNLABELLED: The utilization of nerve transfer procedures in the upper extremity following brachial plexus injury, trauma, spinal cord injury, tumors, infection, or other etiologies are well established. Nerve injuries in the lower extremity pose several additional challenges, including longer distance to target motor end plates, delayed presentation, and concomitant limb trauma. Nerve transfers in the lower extremity have the potential to provide functional (sensory or motor) recovery distally after direct surgical coaptation of a functional donor nerve to a non-functional recipient nerve. The

INTRODUCTION: Ultrasound (US) evaluation of peripheral nerves is a noninvasive, cost-effective approach to diagnosing focal mononeuropathies and guiding surgical management. We used the intranerve ratio to evaluate for possible cut-off values in diagnosis of fibular mononeuropathies (FNs).
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of FN confirmed by electrodiagnosis (EDx) was performed to identify intranerve ratio values between affected and unaffected limbs at the fibular head and popliteal fossa.
RESULTS: The optimal fibular head/popliteal fossa intranerve ratio to discriminate between limbs with

The low incidence of intraneural ganglion makes it difficult to diagnose and treat before it becomes serious nerve damage. This case describes a 69-year-old female, who suffered from the right drop foot and was diagnosed as a peroneal intraneural ganglion. Resection of the mass relieved the pain; however, motor function was not recovered. Early diagnosis and nerve decompression are essential for the peroneal intraneural ganglion before critical nerve symptoms.

Aside from anatomical repairs, the reestablishment of sensory and motor innervations for proper functional recovery is one of the fundamental objectives of reconstructive surgery. The heterotopic transfer of autologous tissues is likely to result in a size discrepancy between the donor and recipient nerves, which will have a negative influence on regeneration. Twenty Wistar albino female rats were used in a study that was divided into two main groups: tibial-peroneal (TP) and peroneal-tibial repair (PT). Both types of nerves were exposed on the hind legs with the nerves cut on the right side,

We present a case of a patient treated with etanercept (TNF-a antagonist) for psoriatic arthritis, who then developed clinical symptoms of lepromatous leprosy. She presented with multiple erythematous plaques on trunk, face and extremities, saddle nose deformity, alopecia, articular deformities of the feet and peroneal neuropathy. The clinical suspicion of Hansen's Disase was confirmed by the biopsy findings (lepromatous leprosy). On further questioning, the patient stated that her father was diagnosed with leprosy 70 years ago and had spent some years in a leper colony in Spinalonga island in

Forty-three patients with several hematological diseases in the early stage of bone marrow transplantation were prospectively studied. All patients underwent a complete neurological examination, vibratory sense perception test and nerve conduction study both before and after the bone marrow transplantation. The following nerves were studied: median, peroneal, posterior tibial (motor), median and sural (sensitive). Most patients were in busulphan, cyclophosphamide, cyclosporine A, methotrexate and corticosteroids. Although the results showed statistical differences in the nerve conduction study

Clinical, biochemical and nerve conduction studies were performed in 100 cases of tuberculosis taking isonicotinic acid hydrozide (isoniazid) for more than 12 weeks. Electro-physiological studies were carried out in a similar number of normal age and sex matched controls. In 16 percent of cases an abnormality was documented in the motor nerve conduction velocity, amplitude and terminal latency of the common peroneal, ulnar and median nerves; of these, only two patients had objective evidence of neuritis. The occurrence of isoniazid neuropathy was found to be more in the fourth decade of life (

Neuromuscular complications of the burn patient that occur during hospitalization frequently are overlooked. Eighty-eight patients with signs of weakness or complaints of easy fatigability were examined clinically and electrodiagnostically. The most frequently diagnosed neuromuscular abnormality in this study was generalized peripheral neuropathy. Other specific neuromuscular problems, in order of frequency of occurrence, were found to involve the deltoid muscle, peroneal nerve, ulnar nerve, median nerve, and brachial plexus. These lesions are found to be commonly due to (1) poor positioning,

INTRODUCTION: Neuropathy is a frequent complication of diabetes mellitus (DM), increasing with the duration of the disease, poor glycemic control and advanced age. Acute presentation of a neuropathy in the setting of a newly diagnosed type 1 DM is rare and holds a diagnostic challenge.
CASE REPORT: A 10-year-old girl, presented at the emergency service with complaints of polydipsia, polyuria, asthenia and weight lost over the last 15 days, accompanied by difficulties in flexing the right foot, during the previous week. The patient denied any pain, paresthesias, or altered sensibility. There w

Foot drop, characterized by weakness of ankle and toe dorsiflexion, is a clinical sign rather than a diagnosis and requires accurate neuroanatomic localization. Potential sites of injury include the L5 nerve root, lumbosacral plexus, sciatic nerve, and common fibular (peroneal) nerve. Because lesions at different levels can produce overlapping motor and sensory findings, incorrect localization may lead to inappropriate diagnostic testing or treatment. This narrative review presents an anatomical, clinical, and electrodiagnostic framework for localizing neurogenic foot drop, with particular emp
