The diagnosis of thrombosis of the deep leg veins or pelvic veins is usually established on the basis of technical procedures. Clinical signs such as swelling, erythema or warming are unreliable. Plethysmographic measures have a low specificity, nuclear medicine studies enable assessment, limited to the lower leg, only after 24 hours. Continuous-wave Doppler sonography, as is the case with plethysmography, does not allow differentiation between intra- or extravascular cause of the obstruction to flow; hemodynamically-unimportant, floating thrombi cannot be detected. Ascending phlebography is a…

Chest X-ray, pulmonary isotopic photoscanning. Doppler sonography of iliac and femoral veins, inferior venacavagram and phlebography of the renal veins have been performed in 26 patients with nephrotic syndrome in order to determine the frequency and localization of thromboses and thromboembolic complications in these patients. 7 of 26 patients (26.9%) exhibited thromboses or thromboembolic complications (2 left sided renal vein thromboses, 1 right sided ileofemoral thrombosis and 1 bilateral ileofemoral thrombosis with occlusion of the vena cava inferior). In one patient renal vein thrombosis…

Because of its fibrinolytic action, streptokinase is believed to reduce the severity of the postthrombotic syndrome in patients with deep ve … ved oral anticoagulant therapy for at least 6 months. Three to four months after the acute episode, phlebography and venous pressure measurements were carried out. Streptokinase appeared to give the best results but with more side-effects. In the retrospective study, 51 patients who had had deep vein thrombosis in 1969 were reexamined 31-47 months later. It wa …

Thrombosis was diagnosed by compression sonography, and positive findings were confirmed by phlebography. McCleery syndrome is a rare form of venous thoracic outlet syndrome characterized by intermittent obstruction of the subclavian vein (SCV) without thrombosis. In 2022, two patients presented to our clinic with McCleery syndrome after living with venous symptoms for over one year. Duplex scans of both patients revealed compression of the SCV on abduction. A first rib resection and anterior scalenectomy were performed to decompress the SCV. At two weeks post-op, a follow-up venogram revealed widely patent, unobstructed SCVs in both patients.

Stent implantation has been proven to be safe and has become the first-line intervention for May-Thurner syndrome (MTS), with satisfactory mid-term patency rates and clinical outcomes. Recent research has demonstrated that catheter-directed thrombolysis is the preferred strategy when MTS is combined with deep vein thrombosis after self-expanding stent placement. However, the stent used for the venous system was developed based on the experience obtained in the treatment of arterial disease. Consequently, relatively common corresponding complications may come along later, which include stent di

BACKGROUND Diagnosing cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) poses significant challenges owing to a nonspecific clinical presentation, poorly correlated laboratory biomarkers, and low sensitivity of non-contrast head computed tomography (CT). We describe a case of missed CVT diagnosis, due to low clinical suspicion and nonrecognition of anemia as a prothrombotic factor, especially during an ulcerative colitis (UC) flare. A recently proposed CVT clinical probability score can guide clinicians in pursuing further neurovascular imaging. CASE REPORT A 35-year-old man, with treatment-naive UC, presented

Endovascular DVT therapy has historically been directed at patients with the most extensive DVT. As evidence has been developed to support the use of catheter-directed thrombolysis for iliofemoral DVT, interventional radiologists are increasingly being referred patients with DVT that is anatomically less severe. In this article, we outline the key considerations that should be weighed in determining whether or not to provide aggressive therapy to patients with DVT limited to the femoropopliteal veins.

The term thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) refers to a heterogeneous group of disorders, all of which have in common compression of one or more neurovascular elements at some point within the thoracic outlet. Of the five disorders comprising this group, four have all of the features expected of a syndrome-a recognized constellation of clinical features; an anatomic derangement accounting for these features; and a method of testing that identifies the anatomic derangement. Consequently, their recognition and management are relatively straightforward. Conversely, one of these five disorders (nonspe

Left testicular vein anatomy has received more attention due to the presence of competent or incompetent venous valves and bypassing anastomoses, which are involved in venographic diagnosis and embolisation of varicocele. The left gonadal vein develops, in both males and females, between the 5th and 7th intrauterine weeks, being derived from the distal or postrenal portion of the left subcardinal vein. The varicocele aetiologic hypothesis leads to ontogenetic disturbances in the development of the secondary venous system. Retrograde testicular venography shows the precise anatomy of the left p

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis, treatment, and long-term sequelae of lower extremity deep venous thrombosis (DVT) depend on the anatomic location and extent of the process, yet a lack of such fundamental knowledge has limited the development of effective protocols for managing patients with DVT.
METHODS: Venograms with evidence of acute DVT were evaluated, and the extent of the thrombotic process was recorded and correlated with the clinical presentation. Thrombi were classified according to the venous segments involved and to the thrombus' isolation to one segment or multiple segments. The left-t

A digital 33-cm fluoroscopic system equipped with conventional spot-film and digital or video hard-copy capabilities was evaluated for its usefulness in diagnosing deep venous thrombosis of the lower extremities. The impact of different fluoroscopic field sizes, spatial resolution, and contrast variance was measured by using phantoms. The results indicate that the physical characteristics of the digital system are acceptable for lower-extremity venography. Digital fluoroscopic hard copy was compared with conventional spot films in 22 examinations. The digital examinations were as accurate as t

A 12-year-old boy was referred to our clinic because of microscopic hematuria. At out patient department, bilateral varicocele was found, but testes were within normal limit. Urinalysis showed microscopic hematuria, but other laboratory data were normal. Excretion urography was normal. Retrograde gonadal venogram showed a rara venous return via Santorini's plexus and lumbar veins. After varicocelectomy, urinalysis improved. It seemed that this condition was a new spermatic vein syndrome.
