Aerobic midgut microbiota of sand fly vectors of zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis from northern Iran, a step toward finding potential paratransgenic candidates.

BACKGROUND: Leishmaniasis is caused by Leishmania parasites and is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected sand flies. Developmen … amplify the 16S rRNA gene which was then sequenced. RESULTS: Three ZVL sand fly vectors including Phlebotomus major, P. kandelakii and P. halepensis were found in the highlighted regions. In total, 39 distinct aerobic bacterial species were found in the sand fly midguts. The sand fly microbiota was dominated by Proteobacteria (56.4%) and Firmicutes (43.6%). …

Epidemiological study on sand flies in an endemic focus of cutaneous leishmaniasis, bushehr city, southwestern iran.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis is the most important health problem in the city of Bushehr, southwestern Iran. The objective of the study was to determine some ecological aspects of sand flies in the city during 2010-2011. Sand flies were collected monthly from outdoors and indoors by sticky traps at four selected districts of the city. They were also dissected and examined by nested-PCR for identification of the parasite during August-September of 2011. A total of 1234 adult sand flies were collected and 6 species including 3 of Genus Phlebotomus and 3 of Genus Sergentomyia were identified. Four spe…

Sadfly fever: two case reports.

Sandfly fever, also known as 'three-day fever' or 'pappataci fever' or 'Phlebotomus fever' is a viral infection that causes self-limited influenza-like symptoms and characterized by a rapid onset. The disease occurs commonly in endemic areas in summer months and especially in August during which sandflies are active. In this article, two siblings who presented with high fever, redness in the eyes, headache, weakness, malaise and inability to walk, who were found to have increased liver function tests and creatine kinase levels and who were diagnosed with sadfly fever with positive sadfly IgM a…

[Meningoencephalitis caused by Toscana virus in Czech travelers returning from the Mediterranean].

Presented are case studies of 3 patients with aseptic meninogencephalitis occurring after returning from the Mediterranean tourist regions. None of the infectious agents common in aseptic neuroinfections in the Czech Republic was detected in the patients. Serological tests showed that in each case, the illness was caused by Toscana virus, a phlebovirus belonging to the family Bunyaviridae. The virus is transmitted by tiny biting insects of the genus Phlebotomus commonly present in the Mediterranean area. The course of the disease was mild to moderate and all the patients recovered without sequ…

Epidemiology of Leishmania infantum, Toxoplasma gondii, and Neospora caninum in Rattus rattus in absence of domestic reservoir and definitive hosts.

Isolated environments are privileged settings to study transmission of infection. Montecristo is a small island where no wild or domestic carnivores are present. Invasive Black rats Rattus rattus (n=78) were captured and tested by PCR for Leishmania infantum, Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum. We wanted to test, for these parasites, the existence of a sylvatic cycle independent of reservoir or definitive hosts. None of the rats tested positive by PCR for either T. gondii or N. caninum. We recorded a 15.5% prevalence (CI95% 8-26%) of L. infantum in the rats and Phlebotomus mascittii was ca…

Cutaneous leishmaniasis in Mowaqqar area, Amman Governorate, Jordan.

At least 193 cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis occurred in eight villages of Mowaqqar area, Jordan, between December 1982 and April 1983. Peak transmission of the disease is thought to have taken place in late summer 1982. Approximately 67% of the cases were below 15 years of age and the lesions seen were of the dry type. The sand jird, Psammomys obesus, and the sandfly, Phlebotomus papatasi, the potential animal reservoir and vector of the disease respectively, were found in the affected area. Furthermore, Leishmania amastigotes were seen in smears from ears of seven out of 11 jirds collected …

Susceptibility of diverse sand fly species to Toscana virus.

Toscana virus (TOSV) is an emerging but neglected human pathogen currently circulating around the Mediterranean basin including North Africa. Human illness ranges from asymptomatic or mild flu-like syndromes to severe neurological diseases such as meningitis or meningoencephalitis. Despite its significant impact, understanding of TOSV transmission and epidemiology remains limited. Sand flies (Diptera: Phlebotominae), specifically Phlebotomus perniciosus and Phlebotomus perfiliewi, are believed to be the primary vectors of TOSV. However, the spread of TOSV to new geographical areas and its dete…

Stages in the identification of phlebotomine sandflies as vectors of leishmaniases and other tropical diseases.

The first time the term phlebotomine sandfly was used, was by an Italian naturalist, Philippo Bonanni, in 1691. The first description though was made by another Italian naturalist, Scopoli, under the name Bibio papatasi. The name of the genus, Phlebotomus, was not given until 1840 by Rondani and Berté. The first description of an American phlebotomine sandfly was made by Coquillett, in 1907. The discovery of the three first sandflies in Brazil is the work of Lutz and Neiva, in 1912. From this date till 1921, 11 new species were described in this country and since then their number is still inc…

Discovery and study of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Karamay of Xinjiang, West China.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) was discovered in the farms of the Karamay suburb, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in the 1990s. Between 1992 and 1994, a house-to-house survey revealed a prevalence of 1.0-1.6% in the residents. The clinical types of skin lesions included papule, plaque, ulcer and nodular prurigo. Observations verified that, in some cases, the skin lesions healed spontaneously in 10-14 months, whilst in other cases, they persisted for several years. Sporadic cases of CL have continued to appear at the dermatology clinic of the local hospital since 2000. Phlebotomus wui (Ph. wui),…

[An entomological survey in the focus of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (Leishmania major) of Sidi Bouzid (Tunisia) in 1985].

An entomological survey carried out in 1985 in the zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis foci of the Center of Tunisia (Sidi Bouzid Governorate), showed the presence of 7 phlebotomine species. Phlebotomus (P) papatasi, the most abundant species (84.6%), was essentially trapped in rodent burrows. Its anthropophily was demonstrated by man-baiting catch. The highest population density was observed during July and August, for P. papatasi. Its role in the transmission of Z. C. L. in Tunisia is discussed. P. perniciosus, less abundant (13.2%) was mostly trapped in animal resting places. Only few specimen…

Leishmaniasis in The Gambia. 2. A study of possible vectors and animal reservoirs, with the first report of a case of canine leishmaniasis in The Gambia.

Following the detection of two cases of leishmaniasis in The Gambia, the possible vectors and animal reservoirs were studied. A total of 5, 158 phlebotomine sandflies, in 20 species and subspecies were captured, including 98 males and 61 females of Phlebotomus duboscqi. This species is a vector of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Senegal and must be suspected as a vector in The Gambia; it was captured close to the dwellings of both patients and from rodent burrows, including those of Mastomys erythroleucus, a known reservoir of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Senegal. We report the first finding in The G…

Phlebotomine sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) from an emergent focus of localized cutaneous leishmaniasis in Yucatan, Southeast Mexico.

Localized cutaneous leishmaniasis (LCL) is endemic in the Yucatan Peninsula, with historical and contemporary records mainly in the states of Campeche and Quintana Roo. Recently, we reported autochthonous LCL cases and 27.6% of asymptomatic infection in the municipality of Tinum, Yucatan, where no studies of Phlebotominae (Diptera: Psychodidae) sand flies have been carried out. In this work, from November, 2019 to February, 2020, we conducted a field study in three areas of Tinum to document, for the first time, the species of Phlebotominae in areas with records of human leishmaniasis transmis
