How to test blindsight without light scatter artefacts?

light scatter artefacts are a methodological problem in testing residual visual capacities (RVCs), for instance blindsight, in patients with homonymous visual field defects (HVFDs). The term light scatter artefact describes the phenomenon that light from targets directed towards the HVFD can stray into the sighted visual field. This might enable an observer to respond correctly to information directed at her blind field despite the fact that she is unable to process that information in the blind field itself. In this manuscript, we present a review of the relevance of light scatter in visual n

More Than the Face: Representations of Bodies in the Inferior Temporal Cortex.

Visual representations of bodies, in addition to those of faces, contribute to the recognition of con- and heterospecifics, to action recognition, and to nonverbal communication. Despite its importance, the neural basis of the visual analysis of bodies has been less studied than that of faces. In this article, I review what is known about the neural processing of bodies, focusing on the macaque temporal visual cortex. Early single-unit recording work suggested that the temporal visual cortex contains representations of body parts and bodies, with the dorsal bank of the superior temporal sulcus

Human-in-the-loop optimization of visual prosthetic stimulation.

Objective. Retinal prostheses are a promising strategy to restore sight to patients with retinal degenerative diseases. These devices compensate for the loss of photoreceptors by electrically stimulating neurons in the retina. Currently, the visual function that can be recovered with such devices is very limited. This is due, in part, to current spread, unintended axonal activation, and the limited resolution of existing devices. Here we show, using a recent model of prosthetic vision, that optimizing how visual stimuli are encoded by the device can help overcome some of these limitations, lea

Spatiotemporal dynamics of responses to biological motion in the human brain.

We sought to understand the spatiotemporal characteristics of biological motion perception. We presented observers with biological motion walkers that differed in terms of form coherence or kinematics (i.e., the presence or absence of natural acceleration). Participants were asked to discriminate the facing direction of the stimuli while their magnetoencephalographic responses were concurrently imaged. We found that two univariate response components can be observed around ~200 msec and ~650 msec post-stimulus onset, each engaging lateral-occipital and parietal cortex prior to temporal and fro

Neurofeedback Training of the Control Network in Children Improves Brain Computer Interface Performance.

In the past 20 years, neural engineering has made unprecedented progress in the interpretation of brain information (e.g., brain-computer interfaces) and in neuromodulation (e.g., electromagnetic stimulation and neurofeedback). However, there has been little research aiming to improve the performance of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) using neuromodulation. The present study presents a novel design for a neurofeedback training (NFT) method to improve the operation of a steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP)-based BCI and further explores its underlying mechanisms. The use of NFT to upre

Exploring the time-course and the reference frames of adaptation to optical prisms and its aftereffects.

Prism adaptation (PA) is used to investigate visuo-motor plasticity and to rehabilitate the syndrome of Unilateral Spatial Neglect (USN). After PA, participants show aftereffects (AEs), contralateral to the side of the optical displacement in several tasks. This study explored the features of these AEs, specifically the "egocentric" versus "allocentric, object-based", reference frames involved, and their time course. In three experiments, healthy participants adapted to prismatic lenses inducing a horizontal displacement of the visual field. In Experiment #1, participants adapted to rightward

Objective frequency analysis of transient visual evoked potentials in autistic children.

Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) provide a means to examine neural mechanisms in autism with high temporal resolution. Conventional VEP analysis relies on subjective inspection of a few points (peaks and troughs) in the time-domain waveform. The current study applied power spectral analysis and magnitude-squared coherence (MSC) statistics (frequency-domain measures) to VEPs recorded during 1-minute runs and with a recently developed short-duration technique that allow for objective examination of the responses (Zemon & Gordon, European Journal of Neuroscience, 2018, 48, 1765-1788) from nonautis

ERP signatures of auditory awareness in cross-modal distractor-induced deafness.

Previous research showed that dual-task processes such as the attentional blink are not always transferable from unimodal to cross-modal settings. This study investigated whether such a transfer can be stated for a distractor-induced impairment of target detection established in vision (distractor-induced blindness, DIB) and recently observed in the auditory modality (distractor-induced deafness, DID). A cross-modal DID effect was confirmed: The detection of an auditory target indicated by a visual cue was impaired if multiple auditory distractors preceded the target. Event-related potentials

Integration of Eye-Centered and Landmark-Centered Codes in Frontal Eye Field Gaze Responses.

The visual system is thought to separate egocentric and allocentric representations, but behavioral experiments show that these codes are optimally integrated to influence goal-directed movements. To test if frontal cortex participates in this integration, we recorded primate frontal eye field activity during a cue-conflict memory delay saccade task. To dissociate egocentric and allocentric coordinates, we surreptitiously shifted a visual landmark during the delay period, causing saccades to deviate by 37% in the same direction. To assess the cellular mechanisms, we fit neural response fields

Stimulus-specific regulation of visual oddball differentiation in posterior parietal cortex.

The frequency at which a stimulus is presented determines how it is interpreted. For example, a repeated image may be of less interest than an image that violates the prior sequence. This process involves integration of sensory information and internal representations of stimulus history, functions carried out in higher-order sensory areas such as the posterior parietal cortex (PPC). Thus far, there are few detailed reports investigating the single-neuron mechanisms for processing of stimulus presentation frequency in PPC. To address this gap in knowledge, we recorded PPC activity using 2-phot

Rapid forgetting of faces in congenital prosopagnosia.

Congenital prosopagnosia (CP) is a life-long impairment in face recognition that occurs in the absence of any known brain damage. It is still unclear whether this disorder is related to a visual deficit, or to an impairment in encoding, maintaining or retrieving a face from memory. We tested CPs and matched neurotypical controls using a delayed estimation task in which a target face was shown either upright or inverted. Participants were asked to select the target face out of a cyclic space of morphed faces that could either resemble the target face, or not. The inclusion of upright and invert

Lateralized evoked responses in parietal cortex demonstrate visual short-term memory deficits in first-episode schizophrenia.

Working memory dysfunction may be central to neurocognitive deficits in schizophrenia. Maintenance of visual information in working memory, or visual short-term memory (vSTM), is linked to general cognitive dysfunction and predicts functional outcome. Lateralized change-detection tasks afford investigation of the contralateral delay activity (CDA), a useful tool for investigating vSTM dysfunction. Previous work suggests "hyperfocusing" of attention in schizophrenia, such that CDA is increased when a single item is maintained in vSTM but reduced for multiple items. If observed early in the dise

Microsaccades inhibition triggered by a repetitive visual distractor is not subject to habituation: Implications for the programming of reflexive saccades.

The oculomotor capture triggered by a peripheral onset is subject to habituation, a basic form of learning consisting in a response decrement toward a repeatedly presented stimulus. However, it is unclear whether habituation of reflexive saccades takes place at the saccadic programming or execution stage (or both). To address this issue, we exploited the fact that during fixation the programming of a reflexive saccade exerts a robust but short-lasting phasic inhibition in the absolute microsaccadic frequency. Hence, if habituation of reflexive saccades occurs at the programming stage, then thi

Vision Therapy: Ocular Motor Training in Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

Vision therapy in the form of ocular motor training is increasingly used to treat visual complaints, particularly in the setting of persistent symptoms after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). In this review, we discuss the rationale behind this intervention and the evidence for its utility. Although the efficacy of exercises for primary convergence insufficiency is plausible and supported by data, there is not yet strong evidence of benefit for the post-traumatic variant. It is not established that abnormalities in fixation, pursuit, and saccades in mTBI are the cause of post-concussive symp

Implicit attentional biases in a changing environment.

The current study investigates whether statistical regularities that change over time affect attentional selection. While searching for a target singleton, the distractor singleton was presented much more often in one location than in all other locations. Crucially, the location that had a distractor much more often, changed to new locations during the course of the experiment. Here we established exactly how the bias of attention followed these changes in the display. Unlike previous studies, we show that selection was remarkably flexible as the attentional bias followed the changes in the en

Visually evoked potentials.

The term visually evoked potential (VEP) refers to electrical potentials recorded from scalp overlying visual cortex that have been extracted from the electroencephalogram by signal averaging. Usually the recording electrode is placed on the midline of the occipital scalp at the back of the head. VEPs are used to quantify the functional integrity of the optic nerves, pathways to the visual cortex of the brain, and occipital cortex. Any abnormality that affects the visual pathways or visual cortex in the brain can affect the VEP. Examples include slowing neuronal transmission, such as produced

Organization of spatial frequency in cat striate cortex.

Primary visual cortex, the first cortical stage of visual information processing, is represented by diverse functional maps that demonstrate the selectivity for specific visual features such as spatial frequency (SF). Although the local organization of SF maps in cat area 17 (A17) has been largely investigated, the global arrangement remains elusive. To address this unclear aspect, we evaluated the organization of SF maps within A17 by intrinsic signal optical imaging and extracellular electrophysiological recording. Our results explicitly showed that SF organization in cat A17 displayed a glo

Hue shifts produced by temporal asymmetries in chromatic signals.

Observers viewed M- or L-cone-isolating stimuli and compared slowly-on and slowly-off sawtooth waveforms of the same mean chromaticity and luminance. Between 6 and 13 Hz, the mean hue of slowly-on L-cone and slowly-off M-cone sawtooth flicker appeared redder, and the mean hue of slowly-off L-cone and slowly-on M-cone sawtooth stimuli appeared greener-despite all the waveforms' having the same mean, near-yellow-appearing chromaticity. We measured the effect of the modulation depth and the slope of the sawtooth on the mean hue shifts as a function of temporal frequency. The results are complex b

Holistic word processing in dyslexia.

People with dyslexia have difficulty learning to read and many lack fluent word recognition as adults. In a novel task that borrows elements of the 'word superiority' and 'word inversion' paradigms, we investigate whether holistic word recognition is impaired in dyslexia. In Experiment 1 students with dyslexia and controls judged the similarity of pairs of 6- and 7-letter words or pairs of words whose letters had been partially jumbled. The stimuli were presented in both upright and inverted form with orthographic regularity and orientation randomized from trial to trial. While both groups sho

Motion along the mental number line reveals shared representations for numerosity and space.

Perception of number and space are tightly intertwined. It has been proposed that this is due to 'cortical recycling', where numerosity processing takes over circuits originally processing space. Do such 'recycled' circuits retain their original functionality? Here, we investigate interactions between numerosity and motion direction, two functions that both localize to parietal cortex. We describe a new phenomenon in which visual motion direction adapts nonsymbolic numerosity perception, giving rise to a repulsive aftereffect: motion to the left adapts small numbers, leading to overestimation
