Daily variation of melatonin content in the optic lobes of the crab Neohelice granulata.

Melatonin is a biogenic amine, known from almost all phyla of living organisms. In vertebrates melatonin is produced rhythmically in the pin … aily light/dark cycle. Our experimental animals were divided into three groups exposed to different photoperiods: normal photoperiod (12L:12D), constant dark (DD), and constant light (LL). The optic lobes were collected every 4 hours over a 24-h period for melatonin quantification by radioimmunoassay (RIA). N. granulata kept under 12 L:12D and DD conditions, …

Bilateral enucleation and captivity influence the reproductive cycle of male Viscacha (Lagostomus maximus maximus).

The viscacha (Lagostomus maximus maximus) is a seasonal rodent living in the Southern Hemisphere. The adult males exhibit an annual reproductive cycle characterized by a gonadal regression period during winter. In this study, we investigated the effects of bilateral enucleation and captivity on their annual reproductive cycle. Testicular volume relative to body weight was recorded monthly in intact and bilaterally enucleated animals placed under natural photoperiod, water, and food ad lib. and constant temperature. Testes and accessory organs were evaluated by qualitative and quantitative ligh…

The eye of the blind mole rat, Spalax ehrenbergi. Rudiment with hidden function?

The rudimentary eyes of the mole rat (Spalax ehrenbergi) are located under the skin and do not respond to light stimuli. However, removal of the eyes disturbs photoperiod perception in these animals. To help clarify the possibly remaining function of the eyes in this species, the authors studied their development and ultrastructure. In the early embryos the presumptive eye regions--the epithelium, lens vesicle, and optic cup--appear initially normal. As development progresses, the iris-ciliary body complex originates prematurely from the margin of the optic cup and shows a very rapid and massi…

Neural control of daily and seasonal timing of songbird migration.

Bird migration is one of most salient annual events in nature. It involves predictable seasonal movements between breeding and non-breeding habitats. Both circadian and circannual clocks are entrained by photoperiodic cues and time daily and seasonal changes in migratory physiology and behavior. This mini-review provides an update on daily and seasonal rhythms of migratory behavior, and examines the neuroendocrine and molecular pathways involved in the timing of migration in songbirds. Recent findings have identified key neural substrates, and suggest the involvement of multiple neuroendocrine…

Comparative analysis reveals the underlying mechanism of vertebrate seasonal reproduction.

Animals utilize photoperiodic changes as a calendar to regulate seasonal reproduction. Birds have highly sophisticated photoperiodic mechanisms and functional genomics analysis in quail uncovered the signal transduction pathway regulating avian seasonal reproduction. Birds detect light with deep brain photoreceptors. Long day (LD) stimulus induces secretion of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) from the pars tuberalis (PT) of the pituitary gland. PT-derived TSH locally activates thyroid hormone (TH) in the hypothalamus, which induces gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and hence gonadotropin …

The hypothalamo-neurohypophysial response to melatonin.

The present paper reviews the findings accumulated on the role of pineal gland and its hormone - melatonin - in regulation of the hypothalamo-neurohypophysial system activity. Effects of modified photoperiod, pinealectomy or treatment with melatonin on the vasopressin and oxytocin biosynthesis and/or secretion have been described. Taken together, the in vivo and in vitro data suggest that the effect of melatonin on the vasopressin and oxytocin secretion depends on this pineal hormone concentration and experimental conditions.

Changes in cyanobacterial growth and photosynthetic pigment under different conditions.

Today, cyanobacteria, as the first photosynthetic microorganisms, play an undeniable role in ecosystems and global markets. In this research, the biomass and photosynthetic pigment production under environmental and nutritional factors in Calothrix and Microchaete were investigated. Photoperiod did not influence biomass production, while both strains produced maximum biomass at a light intensity of 100 µmol photons m-2 s-1. Although 100 mM NaCl and 25 mM NaNO3 increased the biomass in both cyanobacteria, urea at 1 mM inhibited the growth of Calothrix, in contrast to Microchaete. On the other h…

Gestational chronodisruption leads to persistent changes in the rat fetal and adult adrenal clock and function.

KEY POINTS: Light at night is essential to a 24/7 society, but it has negative consequences on health. Basically, light at night induces an alteration of our biological clocks, known as chronodisruption, with effects even when this occurs during pregnancy. Here we explored the developmental impact of gestational chronodisruption (chronic photoperiod shift, CPS) on adult and fetal adrenal biorhythms and function. We found that gestational chronodisruption altered fetal and adult adrenal function, at the molecular, morphological and physiological levels. The differences between control and CPS o…

GIGANTEA as a central integrator of circadian timing, stress physiology, and developmental trade-offs.

GIGANTEA (GI) has emerged as a context-dependent regulatory hub that translates circadian timing into developmental and stress-responsive outputs. Although first characterized for its role in photoperiodic flowering, GI is now recognized as a multifunctional scaffold that integrates light cues, metabolic status, hormone signaling, proteostasis, and chromatin regulation. Here, we synthesize recent mechanistic and conceptual advances to show how GI-centered networks operate across molecular, physiological, and systems levels. We first examine the structural and biochemical features that enable G…

LcCOL7 and LcCOL8 Negatively Regulate Plant Flowering Independent of Day Length.

CONSTANS-LIKE (COL) genes are pivotal regulatory components in the photoperiodic flowering pathway of plants. These genes can be regulated by both photoreceptors and the circadian clock, modulating plant flowering responses under specific day lengths by regulating florigen levels. However, the COL gene family in Litchi chinensis Sonn. has not yet been characterized. In this study, we identified eight COL family members in litchi and classified them into three subgroups based on phylogenetic analysis. The analysis of cis-regulatory elements within the promoters of LcCOLs revealed a wide distrib…

A Functional SNP in the Promoter Region of Ovine IDO2 Associated With Melatonin Levels via Affecting Transcription Activity by CLOCK.

Sheep seasonal reproduction is regulated by photoperiod via melatonin. Indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase 2 (IDO2), an enzyme involved in tryptophan metabolism through the kynurenine pathway and belonging to the IDO family, may contribute to melatonin homeostasis, but its role in reproductive seasonality remains unclear. In this study, genome-wide selection analyses combining Z(FST) and XP-EHH between seasonal and non-seasonal sheep identified a selection signature encompassing the IDO2 region and revealed g.-809T>C as a functional candidate variant within this region. Experiments employing electroph…

Morpho-phylogenic characterization of Neonectria candida as a causal agent of a postharvest rot of pome fruit in the U.S. Pacific Northwest.

Neonectria fruit rot (NFR) is primarily attributed to Neonectria ditissima, the causal agent of European canker, in many apple-growing regions globally. Between 2017 and 2019, NFR-like symptoms were observed in several surveyed apple and pear packinghouses in Washington State and Oregon. In this study, 52 Neonectria isolates were characterized using a multilocus sequence analysis (MLSA), pathogenicity assays, and morphological traits across various growth media and photoperiods. MLSA analysis of four DNA regions, i.e., β-TUB, TEF1, LSU, and ITS rDNA, identified the pathogen as Neonectria candi…

Annual rhythms of thyroid hormone signaling: Environmental influences on thyroid function and disease implications.

Hormones within the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis play a central role in acclimatization, dynamically responding to nutritional, thermal, and photoperiodic cues to coordinate metabolic, thermoregulatory, and reproductive functions. Abundant food elevates thyroid hormone (TH), driving energy storage and foraging behaviors, while scarcity reduces TH levels, inducing energy-saving states like hypometabolism or hibernation, in which TH-leptin crosstalk is important. Cold exposure upregulates TH to enhance mitochondrial thermogenesis, with TH acting as a pivotal mediator in the coordina…

A dynamic model of UVR8 photoreceptor signalling in UV-B-acclimated Arabidopsis.

The photoreceptor UVR8 mediates numerous photomorphogenic responses of plants to UV-B wavelengths by regulating transcription. Studies with purified UVR8 and seedlings not previously exposed to UV-B have generated a model for UVR8 action in which dimeric UVR8 rapidly monomerises in response to UV-B exposure to initiate signalling. However, the mechanism of UVR8 action in UV-B-acclimated plants growing under photoperiodic conditions, where UVR8 exists in a dimer/monomer photo-equilibrium, is poorly understood. We examined UVR8 dimer/monomer status, gene expression responses, amounts of key UVR8…

Role of melatonin on production and preservation of gametes and embryos: a brief review.

The aim of this brief review is to clarify the role of melatonin in the production and preservation of mammalian gametes and embryos. Melatonin is an indoleamine synthesized from tryptophan in the pineal gland and other organs that operates as a hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis modulator and regulates the waxing and waning of seasonal reproductive competence in photoperiodic mammals. A major function of the melatonin rhythm is to transmit information about the length of the daily photoperiod to the circadian and circannual systems in order to provide time-of-day and time-of-year information…

Experimental jetlag disrupts circadian clock genes but improves performance in racehorses after light-dependent rapid resetting of neuroendocrine systems and the rest-activity cycle.

Abrupt alterations in the 24-h light : dark cycle, such as those resulting from transmeridian air travel, disrupt circadian biological rhythms in humans with detrimental consequences on cognitive and physical performance. In the present study, a jetlag-simulated phase shift in photoperiod temporally impaired circadian peaks of peripheral clock gene expression in racehorses but acutely enhanced athletic performance without causing stress. Indices of aerobic and anaerobic capacities were significantly increased by a phase-advance, enabling prolonged physical activity before fatigue occurred. Thi…

Reproductive cycle of goats.

Goats are spontaneously ovulating, polyoestrous animals. Oestrous cycles in goats are reviewed in this paper with a view to clarifying interactions between cyclical changes in tissues, hormones and behaviour. Reproduction in goats is described as seasonal; the onset and length of the breeding season is dependent on various factors such as latitude, climate, breed, physiological stage, presence of the male, breeding system and specifically photoperiod. In temperate regions, reproduction in goats is described as seasonal with breeding period in the fall and winter and important differences in se…
