Phototherapy promotes regeneration and functional recovery of injured peripheral nerve.

Numerous attempts have been made to enhance and/or accelerate the recovery of injured peripheral nerves. One of the methods studied is the use of phototherapy (low power laser or light irradiation) to enhance recovery of the injured peripheral nerve. A critical analysis of the literature on the employment of phototherapy for the enhancement of the regeneration process of the rat facial and sciatic nerve (after crush injury or transection followed by surgical reconstruction) is provided, together with the description of some of the most suitable basic biological mechanisms through which laser r…

Low-dose ultraviolet-A1 phototherapy for lichen sclerosus et atrophicus.

Lichen sclerosus et atrophicus (LSA) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by white porcelain-like sclerotic skin lesions. It is most commonly seen in adult females and usually affects the genitoanal area. Extragenital LSA appears in 15-20% of cases. We report a 9-year-old Caucasian girl suffering from extragenital LSA that was resistant to conventional treatment. After 40 treatment sessions with low-dose UVA1 phototherapy, all skin lesions were resolved completely. Moreover, the improvement of skin status has been sustained during 6-months of follow-up. Long-wave UVA irradiatio…

[Seasonal affective syndrome and phototherapy: theoretical concepts and clinical applications].

Since 1984, there has been a great interest in the phenomenon of a particular seasonally recurrent mood disorder called seasonal affective disorder (SAD) or winter depression and its treatment: the phototherapy. Seasonal affective disorder is a syndrome described by Rosenthal in 1984. This mood disorder is characterized by depression with onset recurrent in autumn or winter and spontaneous spring or summer remission. It is associated with hypersomnia, anergia, increased appetite, weight gain and carbohydrate craving. The population prevalence in the north of the USA is estimated between 3 and …

Cerebral hemodynamics in low-birth-weight infants treated with phototherapy.

Changes of cerebral blood flow were determined in 20 preterm infants undergoing blue-light phototherapy for hyperbilirubinemia. All were healthy very-low-birth-weight infants (less than 1,500 g) with normal brain sonograms and not under pharmacological treatment at the time of the investigation. Blood flow velocity (pulsatility index and area under velocity curve) was measured by Duplex Scan technique during and after phototherapy. No changes of global cerebral blood flow were observed in the anterior cerebral artery (p less than 0.5). Our results suggest no functional disturbance of cerebral …

[Platelet factor 4 levels in full-term newborns undergoing phototherapy].

PF4 levels and platelets counts were studied in a group of 15 term newborn infants before treatment and after 24-48-72 and 96 hours of phototherapy and in a control group of 10 babies. Unlike data found by other AA. in vitro and in preterm infants, our values show only minimal, not statistically significant, differences in PF4 levels and platelets counts between the two groups. The AA. believe that in term infants, with adequate weight for gestational age, proper phototherapy treatment does not cause any change in platelet function, owing to the thicker and more mature skin and to the better b…

Inequality and determinants of access to phototherapy among patients with psoriasis in Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Ultraviolet (UV) phototherapy is a cost-effective, guideline-recommended treatment for moderate-to-severe psoriasis, supported by extensive evidence demonstrating its long-term safety and clinical efficacy. As a foundational therapeutic option in routine dermatological practice, access to phototherapy contributes meaningfully to sustained disease control and overall patient outcomes. Nevertheless, comprehensive nationwide data describing real-world utilization, particularly within universal health coverage systems, remain limited. A clearer understanding of patterns of access may t…

First in-human pilot study of wearable phototherapy for neonatal hyperbilirubinaemia.

UNLABELLED: This pilot study aimed to assess the effectiveness and safety of the first wearable phototherapy device in (near-)term neonates with unconjugated hyperbilirubinaemia. This prospective single-arm intervention pilot study was conducted in the Erasmus MC Sophia Children's Hospital maternity ward and the Primary Care Birth Centre Sophia in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Twelve (near-)term neonates with hyperbilirubinaemia requiring treatment, according to the Dutch national hyperbilirubinaemia guideline, were treated with wearable phototherapy. Results were compared to a matched historica…

Effect of UV-A1 Phototherapy Treatment on Scleroderma: A Systematic Review.

Scleroderma is an autoimmune disease characterized by thickened and hardened skin, Raynaud's phenomenon, calcinosis, telangiectasias, joint … ists for alternative therapies that are tied to a lower risk of adverse events. Ultraviolet (UV)-A1 phototherapy has increasingly been analyzed for use within autoimmune conditions as both a potential first-line or adjuvant treatment option. As such, we conducted a systematic literature review of a total of 293 articles using Ovid, Web of Science, and Cumulati …

Impact of Combined Phototherapy and Melanocyte Transplantation on Indicators of Vitiligo Activity.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of phototherapy combined with melanocyte transplantation on the activity index of vitiligo. METHODS: One hundred twenty patients with stable vitiligo were selected and divided into 2 groups: phototherapy group ( n = 60) and phototherapy combined with melanocyte therapy group ( n = 60). Patients' vitiligo activity scores before and 6 months after treatment, patients' skin pigmentation responses 6 months after treatment, and patients' new Koebner cases 6 months after treatment were compared. The expression of tyrosinase and Melan-A in the skin samples was an…

A Severe Reaction After Phototherapy in a Neonate With X-Linked Protoporphyria.

Protoporphyria is a subtype of porphyria characterized primarily by painful phototoxic skin reactions after light exposure at specific wavelengths. Historically, phototherapy is not contraindicated in patients with protoporphyria since there have not been any reports of phototoxic reactions. However, patients with protoporphyria are advised to avoid direct sunlight. In this case report, we describe a neonate not known to have X-linked protoporphyria who received phototherapy for 1 to 2 hours. Within hours after initiation of phototherapy, this neonate developed a life-threatening reaction cons…

Illuminating Progress: A Comprehensive Review of the Evolution of Phototherapy for Neonatal Hyperbilirubinemia.

This comprehensive review thoroughly examines the historical evolution, physiological foundations, and contemporary advancements in the application of phototherapy for neonatal hyperbilirubinemia. Neonatal hyperbilirubinemia, a common condition resulting from the immature hepatic processes in newborns, poses potential risks, including neurotoxicity, if left untreated. The review traces the historical progression from early recognition of neonatal jaundice to the development of various phototherapy modalities, showcasing the dynamic landscape of neonatal care. Emphasizing the physiological intr…
