Influence of rheumatoid arthritis on peri-implant diseases: A longitudinal retrospective clinical and radiographic evaluation.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the effect of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) on the incidence of peri-implantitis (PI) and peri-implant mucositis (PIM). METHODS: Radiographic and clinical chart reviews were conducted to measure the probing depth (PD), bleeding on probing, and marginal bone loss (MBL) around the implants to diagnose peri-implant diseases based on the 2017 workshop classification. Values were recorded at the baseline (T0) to the last available chart and radiograph (T1). Maintenance compliance was evaluated. Cases were followed longitudinally to detect the incidence of PI and PIM. Various

Colorimetric analysis of intraoral scans: A novel approach for detecting gingival inflammation.

BACKGROUND: Gingivitis, a widely prevalent oral health condition, affects up to 80% of the population. Traditional assessment methods for gingivitis rely heavily on subjective clinical evaluation. This study seeks to explore the efficacy of interpreting the color metrics from intraoral scans to objectively differentiate between healthy and inflamed gingiva. METHODS: This study used the percentage of bleeding on probing (BOP%) as the clinical reference standard. Intraoral scans, obtained before and after gingivitis treatment using a scanner, were analyzed through a custom MATLAB script to quan

Triglyceride glucose index and periodontitis: A nationwide study.

BACKGROUND: Non-insulin-based insulin resistance indices provide a cost-effective assessment of insulin resistance. As periodontitis has a bidirectional relationship with diabetes, this study used these indices to analyze the association between insulin resistance and periodontitis and compared their diagnostic accuracy. METHODS: The study used healthcare big data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES, 2013-2018). Periodontitis was determined based on the Community Periodontal Index (CPI). Among the indices, triglyceride to high-density lipoprotein cholester

Applying advanced psychometric approaches yields differential randomized trial effect sizes: secondary analysis of individual participant data from antidepressant studies using the Hamilton rating scale for depression.

OBJECTIVES: As multiple sophisticated techniques are used to evaluate psychometric scales, in theory reducing error and enhancing the measurement of patient-reported outcomes, we aimed to determine whether applying different psychometric analyses would demonstrate important differences in treatment effects. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: We conducted a secondary analysis of individual participant data (IPD) from 20 antidepressant treatment trials obtained from Vivli.org (n = 6843). Pooled item-level data from the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HRSD-17) were analyzed using confirmatory facto

Dextran sodium sulfate confounds causal role of periodontitis in inflammatory bowel disease.

BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence supports a bidirectional link between periodontitis and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). To investigate this relationship, experimental models commonly use dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) to induce colitis. However, DSS is presumed to selectively affect the colon, and its potential off-target effects on the oral cavity remain poorly understood. We examined whether DSS disrupts oral health, potentially confounding oral-gut axis research. METHODS: C57BL/6 mice received 2% DSS in drinking water for 8 days, followed by 2 days of untreated water. Colitis severity was as

Papilla preservation technique for the reconstruction of the interdental papilla: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Interdental papilla reconstruction is frequently discussed in the literature, with techniques like tunnelization commonly used. However, tunnelization presents significant challenges in flap positioning, stabilization, and ensuring adequate blood supply to maintain the graft. The approach described in this article provides enhanced visualization, allowing better graft positioning, proper vascularization, and increased procedural stability. METHODS: This case report details the interdental papilla reconstruction in a healthy 53-year-old female patient using a combination of techniq

The role, challenges, and impact of occupational therapists in custodial settings: A scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: The number people in custodial settings (i.e., jails and prisons) is increasing globally. In addition to detention and supervision, rehabilitation and skill development are often key goals of corrective services. The high care needs and vulnerability of detainees can often make this challenging, requiring input from a variety of health-care professionals, including occupational therapists. The aim of this scoping review was to synthesise the peer-reviewed literature regarding the role of occupational therapists in custodial settings, the challenges occupational therapists experie

Deficiency of nNOS in adult-born dentate granule cells causes epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to elucidate the molecular role of neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS, encoded by Nos1) in adult-born dentate granule cells (DGCs) during temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). METHODS: We used GFP-expressing retrovirus (RV) to analyze morphological changes in DGCs. Nos1 knockout (Nos1-/-) mice were generated to assess whether nNOS deficiency would induce mossy fiber sprouting (MFS), affect neurogenesis, and observe the morphological changes of DGCs. Nos1 conditional knockout (nNOS cKO, Nos1loxp/loxp) mice were generated, and pAAV-Nestin-Cre virus was used to selectively

TSC2/PKD1 Contiguous Gene Deletion Syndrome: A Case Series.

RATIONALE & OBJECTIVE: TSC2/PKD1 contiguous gene deletion syndrome (CGS) has been associated with a more severe kidney phenotype than observed in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), displaying childhood onset and progression to end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) within the first 3 decades of life. Because recent case reports have suggested a more variable clinical course, we characterized a series of patients with CGS. STUDY DESIGN: Case series. SETTING & PARTICIPANTS: Eleven patients and a clinically unaffected individual from two CGS pedigrees. FINDINGS: The pedigree patien

The microbial metabolite isovaleric acid aggravates gelatinase-mediated periodontal tissue destruction via the NF-κB signaling pathway.

BACKGROUND: Isovaleric acid, an important short-chain fatty acid, can be generated by subgingival microbial fermentation of a leucine-rich diet, such as Porphyromonas gingivalis. This study aimed to explore the impact of isovaleric acid on the destruction of periodontal tissues and to investigate the underlying mechanisms. METHODS: The level of isovaleric acid in the saliva of clinical subjects was measured via mass spectrometry. Isovaleric acid local injection models in 5-week-old male Sprague Dawley rats and an isovaleric acid treatment model of human periodontal ligament stem cells (hPDLSC

Feasibility and accuracy of targeted axillary dissection by carbon tattooing in biopsy-proven node-positive breast cancer: A prospective study.

INTRODUCTION: Targeted axillary dissection (TAD) is used for less-invasive axillary staging in patients with initially node-positive breast cancer undergoing neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT). However, the efficacy of TAD using carbon suspension remains unclear. Here, the aim was to evaluate the feasibility and accuracy of TAD, combining sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) using a single blue dye tracer with target lymph node biopsy (TLNB) using carbon suspension. METHODS: This prospective single-institution study enrolled patients with biopsy-proven T1 to 3 N1 to 3 breast cancer between March 20

Effect of an intensive antiplaque regimen on microbiome outcomes after nonsurgical periodontal therapy.

BACKGROUND: It has been well documented that periodontal treatment decreases the levels of certain disease-associated species in subgingival plaque. Few studies, however, investigate to which extent periodontal therapy restores a health-like subgingival community. Here, we conducted a secondary analysis to evaluate microbiome outcomes of nonsurgical periodontal therapy alone or followed by an intensive antiplaque regimen, analyzing microbiome trajectories at the community level with respect to health. METHODS: Eighty-six subjects with periodontitis stages II/III were evaluated at baseline and

Multistate modeling in long-term follow-up studies, with application to a multiple sclerosis cohort.

OBJECTIVES: In long-term follow-up studies, individuals often experience multiple types of events. Standard survival models focus on just one type, limiting the scope of the analysis. In contrast, multistate models (MSMs) investigate multiple event types simultaneously. MSMs, though straightforward to implement, are not common in clinical studies. This article demystifies multistate modeling and demonstrates helpful techniques for long-term follow-up studies. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: A case study (1996-2017) of 9124 individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS) illustrates several multistate mode
