Molecular Reconstruction of an Old Pedigree of Diploid and Triploid Hydrangea macrophylla Genotypes.

The ornamental crop species Hydrangea macrophylla exhibits diploid and triploid levels of ploidy and develops lacecap (wild type) or mophead inflorescences. In order to characterize a H. macrophylla germplasm collection, we determined the inflorescence type and the 2C DNA content of 120 plants representing 43 cultivars. We identified 78 putative diploid and 39 putative triploid plants by flow cytometry. In our collection 69 out of 98 flowering plants produced lacecap inflorescences, whereas 29 plants developed mophead inflorescences. Surprisingly, 12 cultivars included diploid as well as tripl

Pre-breeding to establish Fhb7 in winter wheat using marker-assisted, modified backcrossing.

Fusarium head blight (FHB) is a destructive disease of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) that causes major grain yield and quality losses. Improving host resistance remains an important strategy for managing FHB; however, resistance is quantitatively inherited and is often strengthened by combining multiple complementary resistance loci. The recently released wheat-Thinopyrum elongatum translocation line WGC002 carries Fhb7 in a Chinese Spring-derived spring wheat background, but this resistance source has not been established in the hard winter wheat (HWW) germplasm. The objective of this study wa

Cotton Seed Germination Under the Main Abiotic Stress: Physiological Mechanisms, Molecular Responses, and Agronomic Strategies.

Cotton is a globally vital economic crop and the primary source of natural fiber. Continued world population growth keeps driving demand for cotton lint, while the increasing frequency of extreme weather events exposes cotton production to a range of abiotic stresses, including salinity, drought, and temperature extremes. As the very first step in plant development, the germination phase is particularly vulnerable to these stresses, which severely impair seed germination and seedling establishment through multi-faceted physiological and metabolic disruptions, ultimately compromising crop unifo

[The biology of bacteria used to treat industrial sewage to remove heavy metals].

The content of heavy metals in the water bodies increases as a result of anthropogenic effects. Heavy metals exert toxical effect on hydrobionts. Involved into the trophic chain they can be the cause of grave human diseases. Microorganisms possess a capacity to accumulate heavy metals in their body, evoke the process of their enzymatic transformation into nontoxical compounds and adsorb them on the cell surface. When breeding bacterial strains for the biological treatment of sewage from the metal-working plants the authors recommend to choose the cultures from econiches containing heavy metal

Molecular and transcriptional regulation of plant defense responses to aphid infestation.

Aphids are one of the important agricultural pests causing substantial yield losses in crops grown across the globe. Aphids are known to cause direct feeding damages and indirect losses due to sooty mold development and plant virus transmission. Plants respond to these attacks by mounting a complex defense response at the infested sites and systemic levels. This multilayered defense response involves a highly coordinated network of phytohormones and other signalling components like Ca2+, mitogen activated protein kinases and reactive oxygen species. Key to these complex responses is a well-reg

Cytochrome P450 family: Genome-wide identification provides insights into the rutin synthesis pathway in Tartary buckwheat and the improvement of agricultural product quality.

Flavonoids can not only help plants resist ultraviolet and pathogen attacks, but also show a wide range of therapeutic prospects for human health, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-hypertension. Tartary buckwheat, as medicinal and food homologous crop, is rich in flavonoids, among which rutin may prevent liver damage. The one of the major objectives of Tartary buckwheat breeding is to cultivate varieties that have large fruits, high flavonoids and nutrient contents. Members of the cytochrome P450 monooxygenase (CYP) superfamily play a vital role in the synthesis of flavonoids,

Identification and characterization of maize ACD6-like gene reveal ZmACD6 as the maize orthologue conferring resistance to Ustilago maydis.

Enhancing broad-spectrum resistance is a major goal of crop breeding. However, broad-spectrum resistance has not been thoroughly investigated, and its underlying molecular mechanisms remain elusive. In the model plant Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana), ACCELERATED CELL DEATH6 (ACD6) is a key component of broad-spectrum resistance that acts in a positive feedback loop with salicylic acid (SA) to regulate multiple pattern recognition receptors. However, the role of ACD6 in disease resistance in crop plants is unclear. Here, we show that the transcript of ANK23, one of the 15 ACD6-like genes in

Comparative transcriptomic analysis reveals distinct responses of beneficial bacterial endophytes to wild and cultivated rice root exudates.

Root exudates from Oryza rufi pogon elicit stronger transcriptional responses in benefi cial bacterial endophytes and, together with bacterial inoculation, reveal distinct plant responses compared with cultivated rice, suggesting that microbiome-associated traits altered during domestication could be exploited for sustainable rice breeding. Beneficial interactions between plants and microorganisms strongly influence plant health and productivity, and root exudates play a central role in shaping these associations. In this study, we analyzed the transcriptional responses of the bacterial endoph

SmartCrop: knowledge base of molecular genetic mechanisms of rice and wheat adaptation to stress factors.

The study of molecular genetic mechanisms of plant responses to specific growth conditions and stress factors is a central focus of scientific research aimed at developing new valuable crop varieties, particularly rice and wheat. These factors include abiotic stresses (high or low temperatures, drought, salinity, soil metal contamination), biotic stresses (pathogens, pests), as well as plant responses to regulatory factors (fertilizers, hormones, elicitors, and other compounds). Modern research in plant genetics is based on the understanding that the formation of any phenotypic characteristics

Dissecting genetic variance structure and evaluating genomic prediction models for single-cross hybrids derived from Stiff Stalk and Non-Stiff Stalk maize heterotic groups.

The early 20th-century discovery of heterosis and the establishment of heterotic groups transformed maize (Zea mays L.) into a keystone of global agriculture. However, maize breeding faces two significant challenges: the gradual decline of general combining ability (GCA) variance within heterotic groups and the impracticality of testing all possible single crosses in the early stages of a breeding program. Here, we developed genomic best linear unbiased prediction (GBLUP)-based multikernel models, using additive and two alternative nonadditive genomic relationship matrices, to estimate the var

The development and release of maize fortified with provitamin A carotenoids in developing countries.

Micronutrient deficiencies have been identified as major public health problems affecting a large part of the world's population. Biofortification of staple crops like maize has been proposed as one of the most cost effective and feasible approaches to combat micronutrient deficiencies. Studies have shown that provitamin A from biofortified crops is highly bioavailable and has the capacity to improve vitamin A status of vulnerable groups. Most people in sub-Saharan Africa subsist on maize and many people may benefit from consumption of provitamin A carotenoid biofortified maize, especially wom

[Review of literature and results from test matings of East Friesian milk sheep affected with brachygnathia inferior].

Shortness of the lower jaw (brachygnathia inferior, underbite, overshot, parrot mouth) is an inborn and mostly hereditary malformation often seen in many sheep breeds. Chromosomal anomalies are generally not involved in brachygnathia inferior. Viral infections, teratogenic drugs and alkaloids of plants often lead to craniofacial malformations associated with brachygnathia inferior. A maternal deficiency of iron is discussed as a cause for brachygnathia inferior. We performed a three-year breeding trial using mainly East Friesian milk sheep affected by brachygnathic occlusion. Mating schemes in

OsDUF3615 regulates grain size and quality traits by modulating cell proliferation and starch metabolism in rice.

Domains of Unknown Function (DUFs) are widely distributed across diverse genomes and are increasingly recognized as important regulators of plant growth, development, and stress responses. DUF3615 is a highly conserved plant-specific protein motif; however, its biological function remains largely unknown. Previously, the gene OsGAPC3, a key regulator of grain quality, was isolated and functionally characterized in rice. Transcriptome analysis during the dissection of the OsGAPC3-mediated regulatory pathway revealed that OsDUF3615 is significantly upregulated in Osgapc3 mutants, suggesting its

Genome-Wide Characterization of PEBP, FD, and GRF Families in Amomum villosum Lour. and Their Potential Roles in Flowering.

A detailed understanding of the molecular mechanisms governing the flowering time of Amomum villosum Lour., a medicinal plant within the Zingiberaceae family, is currently lacking. In modern plants, the florigen activation complex (FAC), which includes PEBP, FD/bZIP, and GRF proteins, is known to regulate flowering. In this study, we identified 13 PEBP, 5 FD, and 19 GRF genes within the A. villosum genome and conducted phylogenetic, structural and promoter analysis. Notably, cross-species protein-protein interaction predictions and yeast two-hybrid assays uncovered an unexpected interaction pa

Genome-wide identification and functional validation of asparagine synthetase genes (NtASNs) in Nicotiana tabacum.

Asparagine (Asn) is pivotal for plant nitrogen (N) metabolism and plays indispensable roles in plant growth, development, and stress tolerance. However, the systematic characteristics and core functions of asparagine synthetase genes (NtASNs) in tobacco remain unclear. Through a comprehensive genome-wide investigation, nine members of the NtASN gene family were identified. Subsequent CRISPR/Cas9-mediated knockout and overexpression assays of these NtASN genes revealed that NtASN1e, NtASN2a, and NtASN2b are the core genes responsible for Asn biosynthesis in tobacco. Their knockout reduced aspar
