Phlebotomine sand flies in Porteirinha, an area of American visceral leishmaniasis transmission in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil.

A study of the phlebotomine sand fly fauna was carried out in an endemic area of American visceral leishmaniasis (AVL) in the municipality of Porteirinha, in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. Captures were performed with CDC light traps in 7 districts, 5 days per month, during 2 consecutive years (January 2000 to December 2001). A total of 3240 sand flies were captured and identified. Sixteen species were found, among which 15 belonged to the genus Lutzomyia and one to the genus Brumptomyia. Lutzomyia longipalpis, a proven vector of AVL, was the predominant species (71.85%) throughout the t

Burden of enteric fever at three urban sites in Africa and Asia: a multicentre population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Enteric fever is a serious public health concern in many low-income and middle-income countries. Numerous data gaps exist concerning the epidemiology of Salmonella enterica serotype Typhi (S Typhi) and Salmonella enterica serotype Paratyphi (S Paratyphi), which are the causative agents of enteric fever. We aimed to determine the burden of enteric fever in three urban sites in Africa and Asia. METHODS: In this multicentre population-based study, we did a demographic census at three urban sites in Africa (Blantyre, Malawi) and Asia (Kathmandu, Nepal and Dhaka, Bangladesh) between Ju

Urban-rural differences in cancer incidence in The Netherlands 1989-1991.

BACKGROUND: Differences in cancer incidence have been observed between urban and rural communities for many decades. These differences have been attributed for the most part to lifestyle aspects. In Western populations, however, differences in lifestyle have diminished. This study addressed the question: For which cancer sites can differences in cancer occurrence still be demonstrated between urban and rural communities in the Netherlands? METHODS: Cancer incidence data from 1989 to 1991 inclusive, were obtained from the Netherlands Cancer Registry. Age-adjusted, site-specific incidence rates

Estimating effective population size changes from preferentially sampled genetic sequences.

Coalescent theory combined with statistical modeling allows us to estimate effective population size fluctuations from molecular sequences of individuals sampled from a population of interest. When sequences are sampled serially through time and the distribution of the sampling times depends on the effective population size, explicit statistical modeling of sampling times improves population size estimation. Previous work assumed that the genealogy relating sampled sequences is known and modeled sampling times as an inhomogeneous Poisson process with log-intensity equal to a linear function of

Effects of socio-demographic characteristics and household water management on Aedes aegypti production in suburban and rural villages in Laos and Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne disease accounting for 50-100 million annual cases globally. Laos and Thailand are countries in south-east Asia where the disease is endemic in both urban and rural areas. Household water storage containers, which are favourable breeding sites for dengue mosquitoes, are common in these areas, due to intermittent or limited access to water supply. This study assessed the effect of household water management and socio-demographic risk factors on Aedes aegypti infestation of water storage containers. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of 239 households

MULTI-COUNTY TICK SURVEY (ACARI: IXODIDAE) IN MISSOURI USA, 2019 AND 2021.

Ongoing surveillance of tick populations is critical for informing the health of humans, livestock, and companion animals. From 2004 to 2019 in the USA and its territories, the National Notifiable Disease Surveillance System data show a 2.1-fold increase in all reportable notifiable tick-borne diseases (TBDs) in humans. Eight tick-borne zoonotic pathogens and 1 syndrome were described for the first time in the USA between 2004 and 2024. In Missouri, 33 counties were surveyed over a 2-year period (2019 and 2021). More than 3,811 ticks were collected during the study: 89.0% Amblyomma americanum,

Entomological surveillance for phlebotomines in the metropolitan region of Aracaju, Brazil.

Records of infections by Leishmania spp. (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae) have been occurring in the last decade in Sergipe, Brazil. The capital, Aracaju, alone accounted for 44% of the total cases of the state for the visceral form between 2007 and 2016, with high numbers also in other municipalities that make up the metropolitan region. In this sense, this work aimed to carry out entomological surveillance actions in the municipalities of the Metropolitan Region of Aracaju and evaluate the characteristics of the peri-domestic environments that contribute to the maintenance of species richn

Demographics of free-roaming dogs in Guwahati, India: Assessing population characteristics and comparing population size estimation methods.

India has the highest global burden of rabies, accounting for approximately 35 % of all human rabies deaths worldwide with free-roaming dogs (FRDs) playing a critical role in the spread of the disease. While several studies have assessed FRD demographics in India, none have focused on Northeast India, particularly Assam. This study 1) characterizes FRD demographics in two urban settings in Guwahati, Assam, 2) estimates FRD populations using Program MARK's Huggin's heterogeneity models and the Application SuperDuplicates (AS), and 3) evaluates AS as a resource effective alternative to Huggin's

Land use around influences the entomological community in lettuce horticultural systems.

The complexity of the agroecosystem can also be assessed by the different land uses in the system and the surroundings, being a relevant way to assess the heterogeneity of the landscape and the effects on the community of interest, in this case, entomofauna. Thus, the objective of this work is to verify how the use of soil in the surroundings of Chilean lettuce horticultural systems, in the Coquimbo Region, alters the entomological community of the crop. Insect sampling was conducted (February 2021 to March 2022) using yellow pan traps. Two sites will be sampled on each of the seven studied le

Density-Dependent Mortality of the Diving Beetle, Rhantus elevatus (Dytiscidae: Coleoptera) Preyed Upon Culex pipiens Larvae: Effects of Prey and Predator Densities.

Diving beetles (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae) are general predators that feed primarily on mosquito larvae and can control their populations, but the evidence for such an assumption remains weak. Rhantus elevatus is an important predator of this group distributed in Egypt with both larval and adult stages preying on immature mosquito. For determine predator effectiveness, it is requisite to identify the functional response (a = rate of attack and Th = time of handling) and searching efficacy (at = area of discovery and m = mutual interference) as both correlate with biocontrol efficacy. Metabolomic evaluation of serum metabolites of geese reared at different stocking densities.

1. Stocking density is an issue for poultry production. High stocking density can impact biochemical parameters, production, and reproductive performance; however, information regarding the effects of stocking density on serum metabolites in geese is limited.2. Twenty-day-old, Sanhua male geese (n = 240) were allocated to one of two experimental groups for 50 days. One group was housed under a low stocking density (LSD; two birds per m2) and one under a high stocking density (HSD; five birds per m2). Body weight and feed intake were recorded every 10 d. Eight serum samples per group were used

Biodiversity of Medically Important Calyptratae Flies (Diptera: Schizophora) in Hospitals in the Northern Coastline of the Persian Gulf, Iran.

Domestic filth flies play a significant role in the transmission of nosocomial infections and cause nosocomial myiasis in hospitals worldwide. This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in five hospitals of the Hormozgan province, of southern Iran. Adult flies were collected by bottle fly traps. Specimens were pinned and morphologically identified using the relevant keys. Species biodiversity indices including Menhinick (M), Shannon-Wiener (H'), Pielou's Evenness (E), and Simpson's diversity (D) were calculated. Totally 2,298 individuals of 18 species of flies belonging to nine gener

Modeling the impact of sterile males on an Aedes aegypti population with optimal control.

We use partial differential equations to describe the dynamics of an Aedes aegypti mosquito population on an island, and the effects of a sterile male release. The model includes mosquito movement and an Allee effect to capture extinction events. We apply optimal control theory to identify the release strategy that eliminates the mosquitoes most rapidly, conditional on a limited availability of sterile males. The optimal solution for a single location is to initially release a substantial number of mosquitoes and to subsequently release fewer sterile males proportionally to the decreasing fema

Quarantine Vapor Heat Treatment of Papaya Fruit for Bactrocera dorsalis and Bactrocera cucurbitae (Diptera: Tephritidae).

The presence of quarantine insect pests in fruit export can impede trade with other countries. Therefore, to reduce the risk of possible quarantine pests in exported fruit, postharvest disinfestation treatment is essential. This study investigated the effects of vapor heat treatment (VHT) on oriental fruit fly (Bactrocera dorsalis Hendel (Diptera: Tephritidae)) and melon fly (Bactrocera cucurbitae Coquillett (Diptera: Tephritidae)) which are major pests for papaya fruits. For inoculated papaya fruits weighing 550 ± 100 g, the optimal egg-inoculation density, rearing conditions, and heat tolera

Preference and performance of the two-spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae (Acari: Tetranychidae) on strawberry cultivars.

The two-spotted spider mite (TSSM), Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae), is one of the most serious pests of strawberry worldwide. Understanding the preference of TSSM for particular cultivars of strawberry and performance on them helps identify host-plant resistance to this pest mite. In this study, we tested preference, developmental duration, fecundity and population levels of TSSM on 14 strawberry cultivars. TSSM showed strong preference for the Chinese cultivars of Yanxiang, Baixuegongzhu, and Jingtaoxiang. Development of TSSM on the cultivars varied from 32.32 to 36.82 days;

Population structure and reproductive biology of Astyanax gymnodontus (Characiformes: Characidae), a poorly known endemic fish of the Iguaçu River basin, Brazil.

Success in fish breeding depends on reproduction intensity, periodicity and the place where it occurs. Information about fish species reproduction is important to assist managers, and to determine conservation and management strategies. The fish assemblage of the Iguaçu River basin is already known for its high endemism, and despite this privilege, the large number of dams built along it, threat this particular biodiversity. Astyanax gymnodontus is an endemic fish species and studies on its population structure and reproductive biology are important, since they represent the first step for fur
