BACKGROUND: Quality of life of patients with congenital heart defects is an important aspect of the assessment of outcome of medical and surgical treatment.
METHODS AND RESULTS: All participants in the Second Natural History Study of Congenital Heart Defects who completed the study questionnaire were included in this analysis. The questionnaire completed by the patients included inquiries relative to medical history, marital and family life, self-perception of well-being, insurability, and employability. The following general observations were apparent. The study cohort reported a self-percep

BACKGROUND: In 2012, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommended hepatitis C virus (HCV) screening for those born between 1945 and 1965. Prior recommendations endorsed screening based on risk factors (RFs). Because United States (US) military retirees have had at least 20 years of access to free comprehensive health care, mandatory physical fitness tests, periodic health assessments and mandatory drug screening, we hypothesized that the prevalence of HCV amongst military retirees is lower than the national average. Thus the new CDC screening guidelines may not be applicable or cost effec

BACKGROUND: Viral populations are complex, dynamic, and fast evolving. The evolution of groups of closely related viruses in a competitive environment is termed quasispecies. To fully understand the role that quasispecies play in viral evolution, characterizing the trajectories of viral genotypes in an evolving population is the key. In particular, long-range haplotype information for thousands of individual viruses is critical; yet generating this information is non-trivial. Popular deep sequencing methods generate relatively short reads that do not preserve linkage information, while third g

OBJECTIVES: We used area-level indicators of poverty to describe economic disparities in the incidence rate of infectious syphilis in Massachusetts to (1) determine whether methods developed in earlier AIDS analyses in Massachusetts could be applied to syphilis and (2) characterize syphilis trends during a time of increased rates of syphilis incidence.
METHODS: Using census tract data and population counts from the US Census Bureau and Massachusetts data on syphilis, we analyzed the incidence rate of syphilis infection from 2001 to 2013 by the poverty level of the census tract in which people

OBJECTIVE: To outline the difficulties and suggest potential solutions in anthropometric assessment of adolescents during humanitarian emergencies.
DESIGN: Literature review.
SETTING: Multiple settings in which the nutritional status of adolescents has been assessed using anthropometric measurements.
SUBJECTS: Adolescents in multiple populations.
INTERVENTIONS: None.
RESULTS: The use of anthropometry may be more difficult in adolescents than in other age groups because anthropometric indices in normally nourished adolescents change with age and sexual development. Moreover, survey and ref

INTRODUCTION: Two population-based studies of neuromyelitis optica (NMO) in non-white populations provided prevalence rates of 0.32 and 3.1 per 100,000 population.
OBJECTIVE: To estimate NMO prevalence in the multiethnic Cuban population by nation-wide case ascertainment.
METHODS: The study was conducted from October 1, 2003 to November 30, 2004. Ninety percent of general practitioners and all neurologists responded positively to the request for information on cases suspected of optic neuritis (ON), transverse myelitis (TM), multiple sclerosis, or NMO. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This population-based analysis characterizes the relative frequency of migraine-related stigma and its cross-sectional relationship to migraine outcomes. We hypothesized that migraine-related stigma would be inversely associated with favorable migraine outcomes across headache day categories.
METHODS: OVERCOME (US) is a web-based observational study that annually recruited a demographically representative US sample and then identified people with active migraine using a validated migraine diagnostic questionnaire. It also assessed how frequently respondents experien

BACKGROUND: Obesity and depression as chronic diseases increase the burden on society, and they often co-exist, interacting to worsen prognosis. However, the long-term trends in obesity prevalence specifically among the growing population of individuals with depression remain unclear. Investigating these trends is crucial for informing targeted treatment and public health strategies.
METHODS: Clinical data on adults aged ≥ 20 years with depression were extracted from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2005-2023. The primary outcome was obesity prevalence [body mass index (BM

Scalable approaches such as digital cognitive-behavioural therapy guided self-help (D-CBTgsh) may help close the treatment gap for college students with mental disorders. In a randomized clinical trial (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT04162847) across 26 US colleges, populations were offered a mental health screen (39,194 assessed). Students with clinical levels or high risk for anxiety, depression and/or eating disorders (N = 6,205) were randomized to screening+D-CBTgsh or screening+referral-to-college-provided-care groups. Screening+D-CBTgsh reduced prevalence of any mental disorder (primary outcome)

The aim of this study was to estimate and compare the age-specific and sex-adjusted case-fatality rates (CFRs) among Arab Americans to Hispanic, non-Hispanic Black, non-Hispanic White, and Asian adults living in Michigan. Data from Michigan's vital records, surveillance data (March 2020-July 2021), and an Arab/Chaldean surname algorithm were used. We used χ2 tests to determine statistically significant differences between groups. Logistic regression was used to estimate age-specific and sex-adjusted CFRs. Arab Americans had a lower CFR of 1.54% compared with Asian (1.97%), non-Hispanic White (

Little is known about the extent of problems due to extramedical opioid analgesic use ('analgesic misuse') in the US general population. This study explores the distribution of the seven DSM-IV-defined past-year dependence symptoms in a total household sample of 7,810 past-year extramedical opioid analgesic users using the 2002-2003 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH). We tested for differences in opioid analgesic dependence symptom profiles across four subgroups of opioid analgesic users, different levels of deviant behaviors, and presence/absence of serious mental health problems

Groups at high risk for breast cancer are generally identified using Gail's coefficient (GC) which is calculated on the basis of up-to-date age, recorded menarche, at primapara age, having kinswomen with breast cancer, number of biopsy examinations and morphological evidence of atypical hyperplasia of the breast in case history. We established GC versus estrogen receptor pattern of tumor and body weight in 108 cancer patients. Estimated mean GC values for the next 5 years and survival time did not differ significantly from those in healthy subjects (n=60). They were lower than in the US popula

We studied three groups of patients with coeliac disease: group 1 = 95 adult patients with gastro-intestinal symptoms diagnosed after reaching adult height, 41 of whom had had symptoms during childhood; group 2 = 23 adult patients with classic coeliac disease treated before or during puberty; group 3 = 11 coeliac children with short stature and no gastro-intestinal symptoms diagnosed and treated before or during puberty. We evaluated the adult height in groups 1 and 2 and the growth during the first years of diet in group 3. Our study leads us to the following conclusions. Dieting leads to a m

BACKGROUND: An estimated 11 million individuals are released from U.S. jails and prisons each year. Individuals with a history of incarceration have higher rates of cardiovascular disease (CVD) events and mortality compared to the general population, especially in the weeks following release from carceral facilities. Healthy sleep, associated with cardiovascular health, is an underexplored factor in the epidemiology of CVD in this population. Incarcerated people may have unique individual, environmental, and institutional policy-level reasons for being sleep deficient. The social and physical

Genomic selection and extensive use of a few elite bulls through artificial insemination are leading to reduced genetic diversity in Jersey cattle. Conservation of genetic diversity through gene banks can protect a breed's genetic diversity and genetic gain, ensuring continued genetic advancement in the future. The availability of genomic information in the US National Animal Germplasm Program (NAGP) facilitates characterization of Jersey bulls in the germplasm collection. Therefore, in this study, we compared the genetic diversity and inbreeding between Jersey bulls in the NAGP and the Nation
