Long-Term Follow-Up of Women with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS): A 16-Year Longitudinal Study.

Background and Objectives: Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) is a complex disorder characterized by persistent or relapsing fatigue lasting at least six months, not alleviated by rest and not previously present. It is accompanied by post-exertional symptom exacerbation and non-restorative sleep. Fatigue is often disabling and reduces daily activity by more than 50%. This study aimed to evaluate the long-term frequency of somatic and psychiatric disorders in women previously diagnosed with ME/CFS and to describe the long-term clinical course, laboratory findings, and f

Mapping the association between mental health and people's perceived and actual ability to practice hygiene-related behaviours in humanitarian and pandemic crises: A scoping review.

Humanitarian crises such as disease outbreaks, conflict and displacement and natural disasters affect millions of people primarily in low- and middle-income countries. Here, they often reside in areas with poor environmental health conditions leading to an increased burden of infectious diseases such as gastrointestinal and respiratory infections. Water, sanitation, and hygiene behaviours are critical to prevent such infections and deaths. A scoping review was conducted to map out what is known about the association between three mental health disorders and people's perceived and actual abilit

Tumor suppressor Parkin induces p53-mediated cell cycle arrest in human lung and colorectal cancer cells.

INTRODUCTION: Thyroid dysfunctions in the paediatric population can present with atypical and nonspecific systemic manifestations, making diagnosis particularly challenging. Viral infections, including severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), have increasingly been implicated in the onset or exacerbation of autoimmune thyroid diseases both in children and adults. This report describes a case of autoimmune thyroiditis with a transient hyperthyroid phase (hashitoxicosis) following prior exposure to SARS-CoV-2, highlighting the possible immune-mediated mechanisms of viral-ind

Viral prophylaxis in organ transplant patients.

Viral pathogens have emerged as the most important microbial agents having deleterious effects on solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients. Antiviral chemoprophylaxis involves the administration of medications to abort transmission of, avoid reactivation of, or prevent progression to disease from, active viral infection. Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is the major microbial pathogen having a negative effect on SOT recipients. CMV causes infectious disease syndromes, augments iatrogenic immunosuppression and is commonly associated with opportunistic superinfection. CMV has also been implicated in the pat

Vaginal Microbiota Composition and Its Relationship with Fertility in Repeat Breeder Dairy Cows.

Milk production in dairy herds is determined by both intrinsic and extrinsic factors, with reproductive efficiency serving as a primary determinant. Infectious, nutritional, and management-related challenges can reduce this efficiency. Following parturition, cows are more susceptible to clinical disorders due to a temporary loss of integrity in the cervix, vagina, and vulva, which allows environmental bacteria to ascend and alter the vaginal microbiota. These microbial changes may disrupt endocrine responses related to conception and contribute to repeat breeder cow syndrome (RBCS), which is d

Lipopolysaccharide and Recombinant Prion Protein Induce Distinct Neurodegenerative Pathologies in FVB/N Mice.

Prion diseases are classically attributed to the accumulation of protease-resistant prion protein (PrPSc); however, recent evidence suggests that alternative misfolded prion conformers and systemic inflammatory factors may also contribute to neurodegeneration. This study investigated whether recombinant moPrPRes, generated by incubating wild-type mouse PrPC with bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS), can induce prion-like disease in FVB/N female mice, whether LPS alone causes neurodegeneration, and how LPS modulates disease progression in mice inoculated with the Rocky Mountain Laboratory (RML) s

Recent advances in diagnosis of immune-mediated cerebellar ataxias: novel concepts and fundamental questions on autoimmune mechanisms.

Immune-mediated cerebellar ataxias (IMCAs) represent a group of disorders in which the immune system targets mainly the cerebellum and related structures. We address fundamental questions on the diagnosis and immunological pathogenesis of IMCAs, as illuminated by recent advances in the field. Various types of IMCAs have been identified, including post-infectious cerebellitis, Miller Fisher syndrome, gluten ataxia, paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration (PCD), opsoclonus and myoclonus syndrome, and anti-GAD ataxia. In some cases, identification of several well-characterized autoantibodies point

Immune Ataxias: The Continuum of Latent Ataxia, Primary Ataxia and Clinical Ataxia.

The clinical category of immune-mediated cerebellar ataxias (IMCAs) is now recognized after 3 decades of clinical and experimental research. The cerebellum gathers about 60% of neurons in the brain, is enriched in numerous plasticity mechanisms, and presents a large variety of antigens at the neuroglial level: ion channels and related proteins, synaptic adhesion/organizing proteins, transmitter receptors, and glial cells. Cerebellar circuitry is especially vulnerable to immune attacks. After the loss of immune tolerance, IMCAs present in an acute or subacute manner with various combinations of

A Challenging Diagnosis of Steroid-Responsive Encephalopathy Associated With Autoimmune Thyroiditis (SREAT) in a Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) Patient With Hashimoto Encephalopathy (HE): A Case Report.

Steroid-responsive encephalopathy associated with autoimmune thyroiditis (SREAT) is a rare condition that can present with multiple neurological and psychiatric manifestations. SREAT diagnosis poses a challenge due to the nature of its nonspecific symptomatology and its overlap with numerous autoimmune, metabolic, infectious, and neuropsychiatric disorders. It is associated with elevated anti-thyroid antibodies, occurs in correspondence with autoimmune thyroiditis, and shows great response to corticosteroid treatment. We present the case of a 27-year-old female patient with a complex medical h

Treatment of Olfactory Disorders After SARS - CoViD 2 Virus Infection.

OBJECTIVE: The benefit of a nasal corticosteroid in the treatment of persistent post-infectious smell disorders is not as clear in previous studies as is assumed for olfactory training. This study would therefore like to describe the treatment strategies using the example of a persistent olfactory dysfunction as a result of a proven infection with SARS-CoViD-2-virus. METHODS: Twenty patients (average age of 33.9 ± 11.9 years) with hyposmia were included in this study from December 2020 to July 2021. Every second patient received additionally a nasal corticosteroid. The two resulting randomize
