A Stepwise Algorithmic Approach and External Validation Study for Noninvasive Prediction of Advanced Fibrosis in Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Advanced F3-4 fibrosis predicts liver-related mortality in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Noninvasive tests, designed to rule in/out advanced fibrosis, are limited by indeterminates, necessitating biopsy. We aimed to determine whether stepwise combinations of noninvasive serum-based tests and elastography (VCTE) could predict F3-4, reduce indeterminates, and decrease liver biopsies. METHODS AND RESULTS: Five hundred forty-one biopsy-proven NAFLD cases were identified between 2010 and 2018 from two Canadian centers. Characteristics of training (n = 407)/validati

Survival prediction for oral tongue cancer patients via probabilistic genetic algorithm optimized neural network models.

OBJECTIVES: High throughput pre-treatment imaging features may predict radiation treatment outcome and guide individualized treatment in radiotherapy (RT). Given relatively small patient sample (as compared with high dimensional imaging features), identifying potential prognostic imaging biomarkers is typically challenging. We aimed to develop robust machine learning methods for patient survival prediction using pre-treatment quantitative CT image features for a subgroup of head-and-neck cancer patients. METHODS: Three neural network models, including back propagation (BP), Genetic Algorithm-

Relationship between Firefighter Physical Fitness and Special Ability Performance: Predictive Research Based on Machine Learning Algorithms.

Firefighters require a high level of physical fitness to meet the demands of their job. The correlations and contributions of individual physical health parameters to the tasks of firefighting would enable firefighters to focus on the effects of specific physical conditions during their physical training programs. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to identify the relationships between various physical health parameters (weight, maximum oxygen uptake, body fat percentage, upper body muscular power and lower body muscular power) and performance on simulated firefighting ability tas

Predictive Factors of Mortality in Acute Aortic Dissection and Validity of the EuroSCORE Algorithm in a Small-Sized Cardiac Surgery Institution.

INTRODUCTION: Acute aortic dissection (AAD) is a devastating surgical emergency, with high operative mortality. Several scoring algorithms have been used to establish the expected mortality in these patients. Our objective was to define the predictive factors for mortality in our center and to validate the EuroSCORE and Penn classification system. METHODS: Patients who underwent surgery for AAD from 2006 to 2016 were retrieved from the institution's database. Preoperative, operative and postoperative variables were collected. Observed and expected mortality was calculated by EuroSCORE. Logist

The Value of Histological Algorithms to Predict the Malignancy Potential of Pheochromocytomas and Abdominal Paragangliomas-A Meta-Analysis and Systematic Review of the Literature.

Pheochromocytomas (PCCs) and abdominal paragangliomas (PGLs), collectively abbreviated PPGLs, are neuroendocrine tumors of the adrenal medulla and paraganglia, respectively. These tumors exhibit malignant potential but seldom display evidence of metastatic spread, the latter being the only widely accepted evidence of malignancy. To counter this, pre-defined histological algorithms have been suggested to stratify the risk of malignancy: Pheochromocytoma of the Adrenal Gland Scaled Score (PASS) and the Grading system for Adrenal Pheochromocytoma and Paraganglioma (GAPP). The PASS algorithm was o

A Prospective Study Identifying Predictive Factors of Cardiac Decompensation After Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt: The Toulouse Algorithm.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) is now a standard for the treatment of portal hypertension-related complications. After the TIPS procedure, incidence and risk factors of cardiac decompensation are poorly known. The main objectives were to measure the incidence of the onset of cardiac decompensation after TIPS and identify the predictive factors. APPROACH AND RESULTS: All patients with cirrhosis treated with TIPS between May 2011 and June 2016 were considered for inclusion. They received a cardiac assessment by standard biological parameters, transthor

Prediction of train wheel diameter based on Gaussian process regression optimized using a fast simulated annealing algorithm.

An algorithm to predict train wheel diameter based on Gaussian process regression (GPR) optimized using a fast simulated annealing algorithm (FSA-GPR) is proposed in this study to address the problem of dynamic decrease in wheel diameter with increase in mileage, which affects the measurement accuracy of train speed and location, as well as the hyper-parameter problem of the GPR in the traditional conjugate gradient algorithm. The algorithm proposed as well as other popular algorithms in the field, such as the traditional GPR algorithm, and GPR algorithms optimized using the artificial bee col

Predicting pathological fracture in femoral metastases using a clinical CT scan based algorithm: A case-control study.

BACKGROUND: We assessed whether there was a difference in attenuation measurements (in Hounsfield units - HU) and geometric distribution of HU between femora with metastatic lesions that fracture, and metastatic lesions that did not fracture nor underwent prophylactic fixation. METHODS: Nine patients with femoral metastases who underwent CT and developed a pathological fracture were matched to controls. All femora were delineated in axial CT slices using a region of interest (ROI) tool; the HU within these ROIs were used to calculate: (1) the cumulative HU of the affected over the nonaffected

Testing a machine-learning algorithm to predict the persistence and severity of major depressive disorder from baseline self-reports.

Heterogeneity of major depressive disorder (MDD) illness course complicates clinical decision-making. Although efforts to use symptom profiles or biomarkers to develop clinically useful prognostic subtypes have had limited success, a recent report showed that machine-learning (ML) models developed from self-reports about incident episode characteristics and comorbidities among respondents with lifetime MDD in the World Health Organization World Mental Health (WMH) Surveys predicted MDD persistence, chronicity and severity with good accuracy. We report results of model validation in an independ

Prediction of imminent osteoporotic fracture risk in Danish postmenopausal women-can the addition of self-reported clinical risk factors improve the prediction of the register-based FREM algorithm?

UNLABELLED: Obtaining accurate self-reports on clinical risk factors, such as parental hip fracture or alcohol and tobacco use, limits the utility of conventional risk scores for fracture risk. We demonstrate that fracture-risk prediction based on administrative health data alone performs equally to prediction based on self-reported clinical risk factors. BACKGROUND: Accurate assessment of fracture risk is crucial. Unlike established risk prediction tools that rely on patient recall, the Fracture Risk Evaluation Model (FREM) utilises register data to estimate the risk of major osteoporotic fr

AminoAcid3D: An Algorithm for Designing HLA Single Antigen Panels and Predicting the Essential Regions of Epitopes Based on Antibody Reactivity Profiles.

The highly polymorphic yet homologous nature of HLA antigens (Ags) constitutes a milieu of public and private B-cell epitopes of varying degrees far exceeding the coverage of the existing cross-reactive groups (CREGs). To support the on-going efforts in updating serological categorisation and designing the next generation single antigen bead (SAB) panel of higher resolution and broader population coverage, an algorithm named AminoAcid3D (AA3D) has been developed as a research tool for designing SAB panels and predicting which amino acid residues (termed 'eps') could be involved in Ag-antibody

Utilization of advanced machine learning models for analysis of pharmaceutical cocrystals by prediction of solubility parameters using Dragonfly algorithm optimization.

Pharmaceutical cocrystals have emerged as an effective strategy for enhancing the solubility and bioavailability of poorly water-soluble drugs. The successful design of cocrystals largely depends on the selection of suitable coformers, which requires an understanding of the molecular interactions governing cocrystal formation during the process. The objective of this study was to develop robust machine learning models for predicting Hansen solubility parameters of pharmaceutical cocrystal using molecular descriptors generated from COSMO-RS and group contribution methods. A dataset consisting o

Developing a Naïve Bayes risk classification machine learning algorithm to predict high viral load in a low-resource setting.

Access to routine viral load (VL) testing for people living with HIV (PLHIV) remains limited in many low-resource settings. There is a need for pragmatic, data-driven tools that can proactively identify individuals at increased risk of virological failure. This study aimed to identify predictors of high viral load among PLHIV on antiretroviral therapy (ART) and to evaluate the performance of a Naïve Bayes classification algorithm using routinely collected clinical data. We conducted a retrospective case-control study using secondary clinical data from two public ART facilities in Makonde Distr

Modeling and optimization of performance and emissions in a gasoline-isopropanol SI engine: multi-model prediction and a PID-based search algorithm.

In this study, the effects of fuel blend ratio and engine speed on the performance and emissions of a spark-ignition (SI) engine fueled with gasoline-isopropanol blends were experimentally investigated, modeled, and optimized. Despite the potential benefits of gasoline-alcohol blends for SI engines, many response-surface-based studies adopt simplified surrogate models and fixed second-order formulations, which may not adequately capture coupled and non-linear effects, particularly when experimental data are limited. To address this gap, a data-driven multi-model strategy is adopted to systemat

Pre-Deployment Audit of Actionability and Equity in Severe Tooth Loss Prediction Using Constrained Algorithmic Recourse and Temporal Validation.

BACKGROUND: Predictive performance does not establish whether model-identified risks correspond to feasible, equitable pathways. We assessed the actionability and equity of a severe tooth loss prediction model using constrained algorithmic recourse and same-source temporal validation. METHODS: An Explainable Boosting Machine was trained using 2022 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data from 433,772 adults. High-risk adults underwent recourse auditing incorporating immutability locks, behavioral directionality, physiological safety floors, and at most three feature changes. Recourse r

An advanced framework for predicting pollen outbreaks using multi-input multi-output temporal convolutional networks and firefly algorithm.

Pollen outbreaks pose serious public health concerns, especially for those with respiratory problems. Reliable detection systems, which provide timely interventions, are essential to mitigate these risks. This work presents novel pollen outbreak prediction by integrating Multi-Input Multi-Output Temporal Convolutional Networks (MIMO-TCN) with Firefly algorithm for optimal hyperparameter tuning. It presents a technique that uses the Firefly Algorithm (FA) for hyperparameter tweaking in conjunction with the Multi-Input Multi-Output Temporal Convolutional Networks (MIMO-TCN) architecture. The FA,

Leveraging machine learning algorithm to predict minimum dietary diversity among children aged 6-23 months in Ethiopia.

Lack of nutrient-rich food consumption is considered an important underlying factor affecting the healthy development of children, and can lead to developmental delays and various disorders. There is limited evidence on the predicators of dietary diversity. We aimed to train and test eight machine learning algorithms in the Ethiopian demographic and health survey (EDHS) from 2005-2019. We used secondary data from EDHS 2005, 2011, 2016 and 2019. A total of 8,996 weighted samples of children aged 6-23 months were included in the study. STATA 17 was used to extract variables from the EDHS dataset

Predictive performance of artificial intelligence algorithms for gestational diabetes mellitus in pregnant women: a protocol for systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a prevalent pregnancy complication that can pose numerous adverse health effects on both mothers and newborns. Accurate prediction of the risk of GDM serves as a valuable supplement to prenatal education and clinical decision-making. Compared with traditional prediction models, artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms have demonstrated higher predictive accuracy and stronger individualization capabilities. However, the application of AI models in GDM prediction is still in a developmental stage, and their performance and clinical utility have n
