3D printing with 2D colloids: designing rheology protocols to predict 'printability' of soft-materials.

Additive manufacturing (AM) techniques and so-called 2D materials have undergone an explosive growth in the past decade. The former opens multiple possibilities in the manufacturing of multifunctional complex structures, and the latter on a wide range of applications from energy to water purification. Extrusion-based 3D printing, also known as Direct Ink Writing (DIW), robocasting, and often simply 3D printing, provides a unique approach to introduce advanced and high-added-value materials with limited availability into lab-scale manufacturing. On the other hand, 2D colloids of graphene oxide …

Mass-customization of oral tablets via the combination of 3D printing and injection molding.

The new frontier of medicine is the personalization of treatment to match a patient's individual needs. Fused-filament fabrication (FFF) offers a platform for the personalization of drug dosage forms, but one of its chief shortcomings compared to other tablet production methods such as dry compression and wet granulation is relatively low throughput. Conversely, injection molding (IM) is a manufacturing technique for the high-volume production of parts, but in which individual part customization is both expensive and slow requiring the modification of expensive mold tooling. Mass-customization

2D MXene-Integrated 3D-Printing Scaffolds for Augmented Osteosarcoma Phototherapy and Accelerated Tissue Reconstruction.

The residual of malignant tumor cells and lack of bone-tissue integration are the two critical concerns of bone-tumor recurrence and surgical failure. In this work, the rational integration of 2D Ti3C2 MXene is reported with 3D-printing bioactive glass (BG) scaffolds for achieving concurrent bone-tumor killing by photonic hyperthermia and bone-tissue regeneration by bioactive scaffolds. The designed composite scaffolds take the unique feature of high photothermal conversion of integrated 2D Ti3C2 MXene for inducing bone-tumor ablation by near infrared-triggered photothermal hyperthermia, which…

Reactive Inkjet Printing of Regenerated Silk Fibroin Films for Use as Dental Barrier Membranes.

Current commercially available barrier membranes for oral surgery have yet to achieve a perfect design. Existing materials used are either non-resorbable and require a second surgery for their extraction, or alternatively are resorbable but suffer from poor structural integrity or degrade into acidic by-products. Silk has the potential to overcome these issues and has yet to be made into a commercially available dental barrier membrane. Reactive inkjet printing (RIJ) has recently been demonstrated to be a suitable method for assembling silk in its regenerated silk fibroin (RSF) form into diffe…

3D Printing of Aniline Tetramer-Grafted-Polyethylenimine and Pluronic F127 Composites for Electroactive Scaffolds.

Electroactive hydrogel scaffolds are fabricated by the 3D-printing technique using composites of 30% Pluronic F127 and aniline tetramer-grafted-polyethylenimine (AT-PEI) copolymers with various contents from 2.5% to 10%. The synthesized AT-PEI copolymers can self-assemble into nanoparticles with the diameter of ≈50 nm and display excellent electroactivity due to AT conjugation. The copolymers are then homogeneously distributed into 30% Pluronic F127 solution by virtue of the thermosensitivity of F127, denoted as F/AT-PEI composites. Macroscopic photographs of latticed scaffolds elucidate their…

3D Printing Calcaneal Fractures: Continuously Improving our Care by Making a Complex Problem Tangible.

Calcaneal fractures are amongst the most complex injuries known to man. Their intricate anatomy and extensive damage after trauma make them difficult to understand and treat. Most surgeons specialized in foot and ankle trauma agree that in most patients surgical managements yields the best result. Functional outcome is largely dependent on preventing complications and restoring anatomy. Reconstruction of height and suntalar joint congruency for example are both associated with improved outcome. Over the years insight in the complex (patho-)anatomy has increased. First by conventional radiograp
