BACKGROUND: Chronic pain can affect body perception at the central level by causing the somatosensory cortex to rearrange. Additionally, cervical afferent abnormalities in individuals with neck pain can impair proprioceptive sensitivity, potentially leading to alterations in body alignment and biomechanics. Nevertheless, there are insufficient studies exploring these notions.
OBJECTIVE: The main objective of this study was to compare the head posture and neck proprioceptive sense of individuals with chronic neck pain and healthy controls.
METHODS: Utilizing a cross-sectional study, a total o

An earlier observational study described selected patients with acute neck pain syndrome, who experienced short bursts of cervical vertigo elicited by rapid head movements. The current study on a larger cohort of 20 patients with chronic or frequently recurring neck pain syndrome and age-matched controls focused on two major questions: (1) Can head movements in subjects with exacerbations of neck pain and restrictions of neck mobility also elicit bursts of vertigo? (2) What is the impact on postural balance measured by analysis of body sway and locomotion? A detailed questionnaire was applied,

Gordon Holmes syndrome (GHS) is a neurological disorder associated with neuroendocrine, cognitive, and motor impairments with corresponding neurodegeneration. Mutations in the E3 ubiquitin ligase RNF216 are strongly linked to GHS. Previous studies show that deletion of Rnf216 in mice led to sex-specific neuroendocrine dysfunction due to disruptions in the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. To address RNF216 action in cognitive and motor functions, we tested Rnf216 knock-out (KO) mice in a battery of motor and learning tasks for a duration of 1 year. Although male and female KO mice did not d

BACKGROUND: Eight-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), a biomarker of oxidative damage evaluated in human neurodegenerative disease, has potential to correlate with postmortem diagnosis of neuroaxonal dystrophy/degenerative myeloencephalopathy (NAD/DM) in horses.
HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesized that 8-OHdG will be higher in CSF and serum from NAD/DM horses compared with horses with other neurologic diseases (CVSM, EPM) and a control group of neurologically normal horses. We also hypothesized that 8-OHdG will be higher in CSF compared with serum from NAD/DM horses.

We recently reported that right-side dominance of the inferior parietal lobule (IPL) in self-body recognition (proprioceptive illusion) task emerges during adolescence in typical human development. Here, we extend this finding by demonstrating that functional lateralization to the right IPL also develops during adolescence in another self-body (specifically a self-face) recognition task. We collected functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data from 60 right-handed healthy children (8-11 years), adolescents (12-15 years), and adults (18-23 years; 20 per group) while they judged whether a

The recessive PIEZO2-associated disease, distal arthrogryposis with impaired proprioception and touch (DAIPT), is characterized by hypotonia, perinatal respiratory distress, significantly delayed motor milestones, and progressive symptoms of distal arthrogryposis and scoliosis. Here, we describe the youngest patient with DAIPT to date, who, at the age of 3.5 years, did not show a single clinical sign of distal arthrogryposis or contractures, but had a history of bilateral clubfoot operations. On the contrary, he presented with some features, not described thus far, such as syringohydromyelia, …

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is an adult-onset progressive neurodegenerative disease affecting upper and lower motoneurons (MNs). Although the motor phenotype is a hallmark for ALS, there is increasing evidence that systems other than the efferent MN system can be involved. Mutations of superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) gene cause a proportion of familial forms of this disease. Misfolding and aggregation of mutant SOD1 exert neurotoxicity in a noncell autonomous manner, as evidenced in studies using transgenic mouse models. Here, we used the SOD1(G93A) mouse model for ALS to detect, by mean

BACKGROUND: The effects of physiotherapy are difficult to assess in very impaired early stroke patients.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to characterize the impact of 4 weeks of passive proprioceptive training of the wrist on brain sensorimotor activation after stroke.
METHODS: Patients with a subcortical ischemic lesion of the pyramidal tract were randomly assigned to a control or a wrist-training group. All patients had a single pure motor hemiplegia with severe motor deficit. The control group (6 patients) underwent standard Bobath rehabilitation. The second, "trained," group (7 patie

Measurements of movement sense determined by threshold levels for the perception of motion of the shoulder were performed in 10 patients with unilateral posttraumatic shoulder instabilities, in 30 patients who underwent arthroscopic labrum repair for recurrent anterior shoulder instability, and in 15 age-related controls. In patients with anterior shoulder instabilities threshold levels for the perception of motion were higher. In addition, movement sense measurements revealed a marked, but time dependent improve of proprioceptive abilities in patients who underwent arthroscopic labrum repair.

Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) can modulate endogenous brain oscillations in a frequency-specific manner. Previous studies have reported that beta tACS modulates the excitability of primary motor cortex and improves task performance. Tactile and proprioceptive stimuli also elicit event-related synchronization of the beta rhythm in contralateral sensorimotor cortex, termed beta rebound, and a strong correlation was reported between proprioception-induced rebound strength and clinical recovery in stroke patients. We investigated the effects of tACS matched to the dominant be…

Children with Down syndrome (DS) have oral manifestations, such as hypotonia of the perioral muscles, inadequate lip seal, and tongue posture changes, which affect the development of the stomatognathic system. The palatal memory plate (PMP) is an early proprioceptive stimulation therapy that aims to improve tongue posture, promote proper lip sealing, and contribute to oral balance. This study reports the treatment of PMP in a 2-month-old baby with DS. Early intervention with PMP exhibited satisfactory results, improving hypotonia, tongue posture, and lip seal even after 2 years of treatment. T

BACKGROUND: People who have undergone anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction have an increased risk of osteoarthritis. Abnormality of lower limb kinematics will occur after the operation. This may be related to lower limb muscle strength, the co-excitation of hamstrings and quadriceps femoris, and the weakness of proprioception. Proprioceptive training can improve the proprioception of lower limbs and promote the recovery of lower limb kinematics. Our research objective is to observe whether proprioceptive training can improve the proprioception of lower limbs within 3 months after surgery …
