Specificity of cognitive structure in depression and social phobia: a comparison of interpersonal and achievement content.

BACKGROUND: The comorbidity between the mood and anxiety is extensive and it is probable that individuals with these disorders share a number of cognitive characteristics. However, comorbidity rates with depression are not uniform among the various anxiety disorders. This study examined the common and distinguishing features of self-schematic structure in major depressive disorder and social anxiety compared to other anxiety disorders in general and to no psychiatric disturbance. METHODS: Participants completed the Psychological Distance Scaling Task, which provided an index of the cognitive …

Feasibility of screening patients for emotional risk factors before in vitro fertilization in daily clinical practice: a process evaluation.

STUDY QUESTION: Is patient screening for emotional risk factors before starting IVF treatment feasible? SUMMARY ANSWER: Introduction of screening for emotional risk factors by a validated instrument (SCREENIVF) in couples treated by IVF or ICSI is feasible, indicated by a moderate to high and stable uptake rate, a high acceptance of the process of SCREENIVF, and a high acceptability of the presented risk profile by the patients. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: SCREENIVF is a validated screening tool to identify women at risk for emotional maladjustment preceding the start of their IVF/ICSI treatment.

Effect of L-theanine on cerebellar granule cell migration related to cognitive disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Cerebellar granule cell migration plays a crucial role in cerebellum development, and any abnormalities in CGC migration can lead to significant neurological disorders such as anxiety, a common psychological disorder that impacts a person's emotional, physical, and social health. L-theanine, an amino acid found in green tea, demonstrates neuroprotective properties and regulates the release of neurotransmitters by stimulating CGC migration. This study investigated the impact of L-theanine on CGC migration related to cognitive disorders. METHODS: ddY male mice treated with a singl

How mental health status and attitudes toward mental health shape AI Acceptance in psychosocial care: a cross-sectional analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become part of our everyday lives and is also increasingly applied in psychosocial healthcare as it can enhance it, make it more accessible, and reduce barriers for help seeking. User behaviour and readiness for AI can be predicted by various factors, such as perceived usefulness (PU) of AI, personality traits and mental health-related variables. Investigating these factors is essential for understanding user acceptance and the future use of AI tools in mental health. This study examines the individual factors that influence the PU of AI in mental

Impact of delivery mode on diastasis recti abdominis, pelvic floor muscle function, and quality of life in early postpartum women: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The early postpartum period is critical for maternal recovery. This study aimed to investigate the impact of delivery mode on diastasis recti abdominis (DRA), pelvic floor muscle strength, sleep quality, and overall quality of life at 6-8 weeks postpartum. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 196 primiparous postpartum women, including 100 vaginal deliveries and 96 caesarean sections. DRA severity was assessed by measuring the inter-recti distance using clinical palpation and high-frequency ultrasound. Pelvic floor muscle strength was evaluated using a perineometer

Superior mesenteric artery syndrome: a contemporary review of diagnosis and surgical management.

BACKGROUND: Superior mesenteric artery syndrome (SMAS) is an uncommon and frequently underdiagnosed cause of proximal intestinal obstruction. It results from the loss of mesenteric fat, leading to a critically narrowed aortomesenteric angle (<22°) and a decreased aortomesenteric distance (<10 mm), causing extrinsic compression of the third portion of the duodenum. The clinical presentation is often nonspecific, with vomiting and abdominal pain being the most common symptoms, contributing to delayed recognition. The diagnosis is established with computed tomography angiography demonstrating a r

Increased release of dopamine in the striata of young adults with hearing impairment and its relevance for the social defeat hypothesis of schizophrenia.

IMPORTANCE: An increased risk for psychosis is observed in people with hearing impairment. According to the social defeat hypothesis, the long-term experience of exclusion leads to enhanced baseline activity and/or sensitization of the dopamine system and puts the individual at increased risk for psychosis. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether young adults with severe hearing impairment (SHI) experience more feelings of social defeat, show greater dopamine release in response to dexamphetamine, and report a stronger subjective reaction to this substance than normal-hearing young adults and to ex

Revisiting the Queen Bee Phenomenon: Understanding Self-Group Distancing in Women and Other Groups as Strategic Compliance Within Unequal Systems.

The Queen Bee phenomenon (QBP), whereby senior women in male-dominated contexts distance themselves from junior women, align with masculine norms, and downplay gender inequality, has sparked considerable debate. This contribution reviews evidence for the QBP and argues that it reflects a way of coping with gendered organizational contexts and constrained advancement opportunities that elicit social identity threat and related motives. This contribution provides a multilevel synthesis of the consequences of QBP for individuals, their colleagues, marginalized groups, and organizations. The QBP i

Measuring the Feasibility and Effectiveness of an Individualized Exercise Program Delivered Virtually to Cancer Survivors.

In the spring of 2020, we faced a global pandemic that resulted in social distancing limitations not previously experienced, forcing practitioners to adapt exercise programming to a virtual model. The purpose of this investigation was to measure the effectiveness of a virtual exercise oncology program in 491 participants undergoing antineoplastic therapy between March and June 2020. Each session was completed virtually with a certified exercise oncology trainer. Fitness and psychological parameters were measured preexercise and postexercise intervention. Overall, participants completed 4949 of

Geographic disparities in access to Medication for Opioid Use Disorder across US census tracts based on treatment utilization behavior.

Drug overdose is the leading cause of accidental death in the U.S. with deaths from opioid overdose occurring at a higher rate in rural areas. The gaps in the provision of healthcare services have been exacerbated by the opioid crisis leaving vulnerable populations without access to preventative care and education, harm reduction, both chronic and acute treatment of the symptoms of opioid use disorder (OUD), and long-term psychological support for those with OUD and their families. There has been a call in the literature -and a federal mandate-for increased access to opioid treatment facilitie

An innovative protocol for the artificial speech-directed, contactless administration of laboratory-based comprehensive cognitive assessments: PAAD-2 trial management during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in suspending in-person human subject research across most institutions in the US. Our extensive cognitive assessment for a phase-2 clinical trial, Physical Activity and Alzheimer's Disease-2 (PAAD-2), was also paused in March 2020. It was important to identify strategies to mitigate the risk of COVID-19 transmission during our testing, which initially required substantial human speech and close person-to-person contact for test directions and instant feedback on paper/pencil tests. Given current understanding of the COVID-19 transmission, we dramatically adjuste

Exploration of factors affecting webcam-based automated gaze coding.

Online experiments have been transforming the field of behavioral research, enabling researchers to increase sample sizes, access diverse populations, lower the costs of data collection, and promote reproducibility. The field of developmental psychology increasingly exploits such online testing approaches. Since infants cannot give explicit behavioral responses, one key outcome measure is infants' gaze behavior. In the absence of automated eyetrackers in participants' homes, automatic gaze classification from webcam data would make it possible to avoid painstaking manual coding. However, the l

Action at a Distance: Geriatric Research during a Pandemic.

BACKGROUND: "Action at a distance" may be the new norm for clinical researchers in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic that may require social distancing for the next 18 months. We must minimize face-to-face contact with vulnerable populations. But we must also persist, adapt, and help our older patients and study participants during the pandemic. METHODS: Clinical researchers have an obligation to help, and we can. Recommendations for clinical researchers working with older adults during the COVID-19 pandemic are discussed. RESULTS: Implement technology now: Minimize face-to-face contact w

Morphometrics of the human thumb metacarpal bone: interest for developing an osseointegrated prosthesis.

INTRODUCTION: Amputation of the thumb presents a serious insult to the hand and diminished quality of life for a patient physically, vocationally, and possibly psychologically. The aim of this study was to define the geometry of the thumb metacarpal in order to help create a standardized set of transcutaneous osseointegrated prostheses to treat patients who have suffered amputation of the thumb at the level of the metacarpophalangeal joint. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 80 metacarpals from 46 cadavers were studied. All soft tissues were removed and the thumb metacarpals were imaged using

Persona-mediated dissociation: a new framework for understanding the work/self-split in sex workers.

Research on dissociation in sex workers is sparse, dated, and frequently framed through trauma-exclusive or symptom-focused models, leaving the occupational functions of dissociative processes underexamined. In contrast, qualitative and ethnographic scholarship consistently describes intentional work persona construction as routine in sex work and often articulated in dissociative-like terms. This Hypothesis and Theory article proposes persona-mediated dissociation, a framework describing context-specific, identity-mediated psychological distancing in which a deliberately constructed work pers

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behaviour Therapy in an Adolescent with Mixed-Dissociative Disorder: A Case Study.

Dissociation is a psychopathological condition with a range of alterations or changes in the normally integrated mental functions such as identity, consciousness, or memory and can manifest in various types such as depersonalization, trance states, derealisation, dissociative amnesia, and dissociative identity disorder (Waller et al., 1996). From an etiological perspective, past experience of trauma plays a major role as a precipitating factor in dissociation, wherein dissociation is conceptualized as a reaction to trauma as a way to distance oneself from the traumatic situation and events rel

Predictors of Lower Depression Levels in Older Adults During COVID-19 Lockdown.

BACKGROUND: Social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic may lead to adverse mental health consequences, such as depression, among older adults. This study aimed to investigate the predictors of lower depression scores in older adults living under lockdown. METHODS: 1,123 older Brazilian adults were cross-sectionally assessed for depression, physical activity (PA), pet ownership (dogs, cats, and birds), ability to make video calls, leaving home during lockdown, and not living alone. The statistical procedures included linear regression and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). RESULTS: After ad
