Psychometric investigation of the Chinese version of the Habit, Reward and Fear Scale (HRFS).

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use is one of the most important risk factors for health, and China is the largest producer and consumer of tobacco in the world. Monitoring and controlling the tobacco epidemic is an important issue. However, the motivation underlying smoking behavior is complex and specific to the individual. The Habit, Reward and Fear Scale (HRFS) is a feasible tool to evaluate this complex motivation. OBJECTIVES: To validate the psychometric properties of the HRFS Chinese version (HRFS-C) and to assess the relationship between motivation and smoking behavior. METHOD: We recruited 967

Development and psychometric validation of a questionnaire assessing the impact of tinnitus on significant others.

INTRODUCTION: Despite evidence showing that tinnitus can have a detrimental impact on significant others (SOs), no standardized self-reported measure is currently available that specifically assesses the presence of third-party disability for tinnitus. The aim of this study was to develop and assess the psychometric properties of a newly developed self-reported measure for SOs of tinnitus and assess how scores could be meaningfully interpreted. METHODS: The research consisted of two phases. During Phase I, the Consequences of Tinnitus on Significant Others Questionnaire (CTSOQ) was developed

Psychometric analysis of the behavioral assessment screening tool (BAST) in adults with stroke.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the initial psychometric properties of the Behavioral Assessment Screening Tool (BAST), a self-reported measure of neurobehavioral symptoms, in adults with stroke. METHODS: We assessed subscale and item-level reliabilities of the five BAST subscales in 75 community-dwelling adults with stroke. We further assessed the known-groups validity of the BAST to differentiate individuals with and without self-reported lifetime stroke history (n = 47 with stroke and n = 1843 neurologically healthy controls). RESULTS: Cronbach's alpha coefficients of al

Rasch Model of the COVID-19 Symptom Checklist-A Psychometric Validation Study.

While self-reported Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) symptom checklists have been extensively used during the pandemic, they have not been sufficiently validated from a psychometric perspective. We, therefore, used advanced psychometric modelling to explore the construct validity and internal consistency of an online self-reported COVID-19 symptom checklist and suggested adaptations where necessary. Fit to the Rasch model was examined in a sample of 1638 Austrian citizens who completed the checklist on up to 20 days during a lockdown. The items' fatigue', 'headache' and 'sneezing' had the h

The Development and Psychometric Evaluation of the HIV Stigmatizing Attitudes Scale (HSAS) in Tanzania.

HIV stigmatizing attitudes are embedded in social context, making it important to develop culturally specific tools for accurate measurement. The goal of this study was to develop and evaluate the psychometric properties of the HIV Stigmatizing Attitudes Scale (HSAS) in Moshi, Tanzania. Items were adapted based on a scale developed by Visser et al. which was one of the first to measure HIV stigmatizing attitudes in the general population (i.e., people not living with HIV). Items were translated into Swahili and modified with iterative feedback. The HSAS was administered to participants (N = 14

Psychometric properties of the Neuropathic Pain Scale (NPS) in a knee osteoarthritis population.

OBJECTIVE: Symptoms resembling neuropathic pain (neuropathic-like symptoms) are prevalent in osteoarthritis (OA) populations. Scales that measure neuropathic-like symptoms frequently were established in groups with true neuropathic pain conditions and have not been assessed in OA. We assessed the psychometric properties of the Neuropathic Pain Scale (NPS) in subjects with OA undergoing total knee replacement (TKR). DESIGN: In a prospective study of adults undergoing TKR for OA, we assessed baseline distributions, acceptability (completion rate), internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha), respon

Psychometric assessment and validation of the dysphagia severity rating scale in stroke patients.

Post stroke dysphagia (PSD) is common and associated with poor outcome. The Dysphagia Severity Rating Scale (DSRS), which grades how severe dysphagia is based on fluid and diet modification and supervision requirements for feeding, is used for clinical research but has limited published validation information. Multiple approaches were taken to validate the DSRS, including concurrent- and predictive criterion validity, internal consistency, inter- and intra-rater reliability and sensitivity to change. This was done using data from four studies involving pharyngeal electrical stimulation in acut

Initial Investigation of the Psychometric Properties of the Limited Prosocial Emotions Questionnaire (LPEQ).

Callous-unemotional traits, which include lack of remorse or guilt, callousness/lack of empathy, unconcern about performance, and shallow/deficient affect, were included as a specifier of conduct disorder in the current (fifth) edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders under the rubric Limited Prosocial Emotions (LPEs). The purpose of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of a new rating scale, the Limited Prosocial Emotions Questionnaire (LPEQ). Caregivers (n = 1,050) of children (Mage = 8.42, SD = 2.31) completed the LPEQ and other measures. Results

Psychometric assessment of mental health in tinnitus patients, depressive and healthy controls.

Tinnitus describes the perception of a sound without external source and is characterized by high comorbidity, e.g. depression. In many studies, tinnitus patients were compared to healthy controls while a comorbid psychiatric diagnosis was an exclusion criterion. Consequently, patients with severe tinnitus and psychiatric comorbidity were often neglected. In the current study, we tried to fill this gap and compared four groups including two control groups: (1) chronic tinnitus patients with mild tinnitus distress (N = 37), (2) chronic tinnitus patients with severe tinnitus distress (N = 24), (

The Dissociative Subtype of PTSD Interview (DSP-I): Development and Psychometric Properties.

The inclusion of the dissociative subtype of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD-DS) in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) reflects the importance of assessing PTSD-DS. We developed the Dissociative Subtype of PTSD Interview (DSP-I). This clinician-administered instrument assesses the presence and severity of PTSD-DS (i.e., symptoms of depersonalization or derealization) and contains a supplementary checklist that enables assessment and differentiation of other trauma-related dissociative symptoms (i.e., blanking out, emotional numbing, alte

The influence of gestational age in the psychometric testing of the Bernese Pain Scale for Neonates.

BACKGROUND: Assessing pain in neonates is challenging because full-term and preterm neonates of different gestational ages (GAs) have widely varied reactions to pain. We validated the Bernese Pain Scale for Neonates (BPSN) by testing its use among a large sample of neonates that represented all GAs. METHODS: In this prospective multisite validation study, we assessed 154 neonates between 24 2/7 and 41 4/7 weeks GA, based on the results of 1-5 capillary heel sticks in their first 14 days of life. From each heel stick, we produced three video sequences: baseline; heel stick; and, recovery. Five
