Visual representations of dynamic actions from static pictures.

We investigated how subjects used their knowledge of biomechanical constraints when judging whether different items were in balance or in the process of falling, as a function of their angle of slant. In the first experiment, the stimuli were pictures of postures of a human body, of a wooden mannequin, and of a skeleton. The results show that for these 3 items, fall responses appeared for a smaller slant angle for a backward slant than for a forward one. This difference may reflect the influence of biomechanical constraints. To verify whether the asymmetry of the responses to the mannequin and

Orientation-selective adaptation to crowded illusory lines.

Visual adaptation has been successfully used as a psychophysical tool for studying the functional organisation of visual awareness. It has been shown that orientation-selective adaptation to a grating pattern occurs in crowded conditions. In such conditions, simultaneous presentation of flanking distractors pushes the target stimulus out of conscious perception and severely impairs orientation discrimination in the periphery of the visual field. In the present study, orientation-selective adaptation to illusory lines induced by two line gratings abutting each other with a phase shift was exami

Congenital stationary night blindness with myopia: a clinico-pathologic study.

The left eye of a 77 year old male patient was enucleated because of absolute glaucoma. This eye showed subnormal electroretinogram (ERG) and oscillatory potentials preoperatively, but the other eye showed Schubert-Bornschein type ERG and monophasic dark adaptation curve. Light and electron microscopic studies of the left eye showed a normal arrangement of discs of rod outer segments, normal synaptic ends of the photoreceptors, and complete loss of ganglion cells. From the subnormal ERG in the left eye we assumed it was originally Schubert-Bornschein type ERG but inverted to subnormal type ERG

Visual field defects for vergence eye movements and for stereomotion perception.

An objective visual field can be mapped in terms of stimulus-induced eye movement. The authors used the scleral coil technique to record vergence and conjugate eye movements while stimulating different visual field locations with a 3 X 3 deg target whose image vergence was oscillated. For each of three subjects tested there was a visual field location where vergence eye movements were much weaker than in a control location of equal retinal eccentricity. On the other hand, conjugate eye movements driven from these two locations by lateral motion were similar. Field defects for ocular vergence c

A technique for measuring the perception of added resistive loads during nasal breathing.

The perception of resistive loads added to nasal breathing was assessed in ten healthy adults using established psychophysical methods previously described for oral breathing. Detection threshold, that is, the smallest incremental resistance that the subject could detect 50% of the time, was determined at three different time periods (0, 30, and 60 min) on two separate days to determine the reproducibility of values over time. Nasal airway resistance measurements were made before and after threshold determinations to determine the influence of baseline resistance on the ability to detect added

Representational momentum beyond the target?

Whether the motion of a target could influence the represented location of another stimulus was examined. In Experiment 1, judged location of a stationary object was displaced in the direction of motion of a subsequent moving target. In Experiment 2, forward displacement of the judged locations of two sequentially presented targets moving along the same path was not influenced by whether the targets moved in the same direction or in opposite directions. In Experiment 3, forward displacement of the judged locations of two simultaneously presented targets moving along different paths was larger

No Effect of Musical Training on Frequency Selectivity Estimated Using Three Methods.

It is widely believed that the frequency selectivity of the auditory system is largely determined by processes occurring in the cochlea. If so, musical training would not be expected to influence frequency selectivity. Consistent with this, auditory filter shapes for low center frequencies do not differ for musicians and nonmusicians. However, it has been reported that psychophysical tuning curves (PTCs) at 4000 Hz were sharper for musicians than for nonmusicians. This study explored the origin of the discrepancy across studies. Frequency selectivity was estimated for musicians and nonmusician

Objectively determined refraction improves peripheral vision.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was twofold: to verify a fast, clinically applicable method for determining off-axis refraction and to assess the impact of objectively obtained off-axis refractive correction on peripheral low-contrast visual acuity. METHODS: We measured peripheral low-contrast resolution acuity with Gabor patches both with and without off-axis correction at 20 degrees in the nasal visual field of 10 emmetropic subjects; the correction was obtained using a commercial open-field Hartmann-Shack wavefront sensor, the COAS-HD VR aberrometer. Off-axis refractive errors were calc

Comparing motion induction in lateral motion and motion in depth.

Induced motion, the apparent motion of an object when a nearby object moves, has been shown to occur in a variety of different conditions, including motion in depth. Here we explore whether similar patterns of induced motion result from induction in a lateral direction (frontoparallel motion) or induction in depth. We measured the magnitude of induced motion in a stationary target for: (a) binocularly viewed lateral motion of a pair of inducers, where the angular motion is in the same direction for the two eyes, and (b) binocularly viewed motion in depth of inducers, where the angular motions

Internal models and prediction of visual gravitational motion.

Baurès et al. [Baurès, R., Benguigui, N., Amorim, M.-A., & Siegler, I. A. (2007). Intercepting free falling objects: Better use Occam's razor than internalize Newton's law. Vision Research, 47, 2982-2991] rejected the hypothesis that free-falling objects are intercepted using a predictive model of gravity. They argued instead for "a continuous guide for action timing" based on visual information updated till target capture. Here we show that their arguments are flawed, because they fail to consider the impact of sensori-motor delays on interception behaviour and the need for neural compensatio

On the protheticity of olfactory pleasantness and intensity.

In Exp. 1, the "protheticity" of the pleasantness of a diverse set of relatively isointensive odorants was estimated using exponents from power functions fitted by an interative least squares procedure between scale values established by (a) magnitude estimation and (b) category rating and rank ordering. In Exp. 2, this procedure was applied to intensity data derived from quarter-log-step volume dilution series of two hedonically disparate odorants, furfural and methyl salicylate. The goodness of fit of the power functions was somewhat better for the intensity than for the pleasantness data. T

Exploring Olfactory Dysfunction as a Marker of Frailty and Postoperative Outcomes in Head and Neck Cancer.

IMPORTANCE: Olfactory dysfunction (OD) is increasingly recognized as a robust marker of frailty and mortality. Despite broad recognition of frailty as a critical component of head and neck cancer (HNC) care, there is no standardized frailty assessment. OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of OD and its association with frailty and postoperative outcomes in HNC. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In this prospective cohort study with enrollment between February 17, 2021, to September 29, 2021, at a tertiary academic medical center, 85 eligible adult patients with primary, treatment-naive HNC o

Auditory temporal processing deficit in dyslexia is associated with enhanced sensitivity in the visual modality.

Developmental dyslexia has been associated with a deficit in temporal processing, but it is controversial whether the postulated deficit is pansensory or limited to the auditory modality. We present psychophysical assessment data of auditory and visual temporal processing abilities in children with dyslexia. While none of the dyslexic children displayed temporal processing abnormalities in the visual sensory modality, dyslexics with poor auditory temporal scores reached high-level visual performance. Our results do not confirm the hypothesis of a general temporal processing deficit for dyslexi

Retinitis pigmentosa--an overview.

Retinitis pigmentosa is a retinal pigment dystrophy of multiple genetic inheritance patterns affecting approximately .5% of the world population. It may be recognized clinically by observing specific ophthalmoscopic changes, as well as through psychophysical and electrodiagnostic testing. It may also be associated with several other genetic conditions. Basic research indicates that while there is no specific cure, certain precautions may prevent rapid acceleration of the disease process. This article presents an overview of retinitis pigmentosa, including its diagnosis and genetic patterns, an

Temporal bone histopathology of a patient with a nucleus 22-channel cochlear implant.

The temporal bone histopathology of a patient with profound sensorineural hearing loss attributable to cochlear otosclerosis is presented. The patient had a Nucleus 22-channel cochlear prosthesis implanted in the right ear prior to his demise. Unintentional scala media insertion of the electrode array resulted from labyrinthitis ossificans obliteration of the scala tympani. Inadvertent facial nerve stimulation necessitated program exclusion of electrodes 11 to 16 located in proximity to the labyrinthine and geniculate segments of the facial nerve. The patient received significant benefit from

Demonstration of presbycusis across repeated measures in a nonhuman primate species.

The progress of age-related hearing loss in three 31-yr-old, two 24-yr-old, and two 9-yr-old rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) was repeatedly examined over a period of 3 yr. Pure-tone audiograms for seven frequencies, .125, .500, 2.000, 4.000, 16.000, 22.667, and 32.000 kHz, were obtained through the use of the psychophysical tracking method. Analysis indicated the presence of presbycusis in the older animals. Animals demonstrating presbycusis showed a progressive decrement in the ability to detect higher frequencies and an overall hearing loss at all frequencies.

[Selected problems in the rehabilitation of young children with severe hearing loss].

The aim of the work was an analysis of the causes of difficulties in the rehabilitation of children with profound hearing loss. A theoretical basis of this analysis is the assumption that rehabilitation effects are determined by factors related to the system of care of the deaf child, diagnostic possibilities, and psychophysical properties of the child. The reported analysis was carried out in a material of 232 children aged up to 3 years, treated at the Audiology Outpatient Clinic of the Institute. The following factors were found of great importance in the analysis of difficulties in rehabil

Two forms of autosomal dominant primary retinitis pigmentosa.

Two types of autosomal dominant retinitis pigmentosa (RP) are identified on the basis of perimetric measures of rod sensitivity relative to cone sensitivity. Type 1 dominant RP patients are characterized by an early diffuse loss of rod sensitivity with a later loss of cone sensitivity and by childhood onset of night blindness. Type 2 dominant RP patients are characterized by a regionalized and combined loss of rod and cone sensitivity with adulthood onset of nightblindness. Comparisons of losses in the photopic and scotopic electroretinogram amplitudes corroborate the psychophysical results. C

Recovery From Alopecia After COVID-19.

Herein, we report a remarkable case of post-coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) diffuse alopecia that gradually improved and recovered, and the hair volume returned approximately to the pre-infection level, seven months after the patient's first diagnosis of COVID-19. Approximately 20% of patients with COVID-19 develop alopecia a few months after the acute infection phase. Telogen effluvium is the major type of COVID-19 sequela secondary to physical or psychological distress. It is reversible and is expected to improve without any treatment, and it can be addressed by explaining to the patient
