Characterizing cancer-related cognitive impairments and impact on quality of life in women with metastatic breast cancer.

PURPOSE: Little is known about cancer-related cognitive impairments (CRCI) in women with metastatic breast cancer (MBC). The purpose of this study is to (1) comprehensively describe CRCI and any associated psychosocial and behavioral symptoms, (2) determine observable sociodemographic and clinical risk factors for CRCI, and (3) explore cognitive and psychosocial predictors of quality of life and social functioning in women living with MBC. METHODS: Using a cross-sectional design, women with MBC completed assessments (objective and subjective measures of CRCI including 3 open-ended questions,

Impact of Hair Transplantation on Quality of Life.

BACKGROUND: Alopecia is defined as partial or complete hair loss. The most common form is androgenetic alopecia, which occurs in both men and women. Despite the nonsurgical options available for treatment, the only permanent solution is hair transplantation. Hair loss has been shown to have significant psychological consequences associated with loss of self-confidence, poor self-image and difficulties in social functioning. We aim to examine the effect of hair transplantation on quality of life and psychosocial functioning. METHODS: Forty-eight patients with androgenetic alopecia were enrolle…

Characterizing the longitudinal course of symptoms and functioning in bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: The course of Bipolar Disorder (BD) is highly variable, with marked inter and intra-individual differences in symptoms and functioning. In this study, we identified illness trajectories across major clinical domains that could have etiological, prognostic, and therapeutic relevance. METHODS: Using the Systematic Treatment Enhancement Program for Bipolar Disorder (STEP-BD) study, we performed univariate and multivariate trajectory modeling of depressive symptoms, manic symptoms, and psychosocial functioning. Multinomial regression was performed to identify baseline variables associ…

Age differences in the phenomenology of pediatric bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: The primary purpose of this study was to explore whether age differences in the phenomenology of bipolar disorders from 4 to 17 years of age exist. METHODS: Outcome measures included questionnaires pertaining to mood symptoms, psychosocial functioning, and family history of psychiatric illness. Phenomenology was examined in two diagnostic groups: syndromal bipolar disorder (bipolar I or II) and subsyndromal bipolar disorder (bipolar disorder not otherwise specified or cyclothymia) and across six age cohorts: 4-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-13, and 14-17 years. Analyses examined linear and non-…

Exploring the dual continuum of belonging and loneliness among college students in the US.

Loneliness and belonging are associated with negative determinants of mental health among college students and are often studied independently. The purpose of this study was to explore a dual continuum of belonging and loneliness using data from the US National College Health Assessment (Spring 2023; n = 78,024). Multivariate and univariate analyses of variance were utilized to understand associations between the DCBL on measures of psychosocial functioning. Most students were socially fulfilled (low loneliness/high belonging). A significant multivariate effect of DCBL subgroup membership on t…

Quality of Life, Body Image and Sexual Functioning in Bariatric Surgery Patients.

This article provides an overview of the literature on quality of life, body image and sexual behaviour in individuals with extreme obesity … who undergo bariatric surgery typically report significant improvements in these and other areas of psychosocial functioning, often before they reach their maximum weight loss. The durability of these changes as patients maintain or regain weight, however, is largely unknown.

Disentangle the neural correlates of attachment style in healthy individuals.

Since its development and theorisation in the 60s, attachment theory has greatly influenced both clinical and developmental psychology suggesting the existence of complex dynamics based on the relationship between an infant and its caregiver, that affects personality traits and interpersonal relationships in adulthood. Many studies have been conducted to explore the association between attachment styles and psychosocial functioning and mental health. By contrast, only a few studies have investigated the neurobiological underpinnings of attachment style, showing mixed results. Therefore, in thi…

The effectiveness of psychosocial interventions on physiological symptoms of menopause: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Menopause is a transitional life stage marked by the end of menstruation, during which approximately 80-90% of women experience persistent symptoms such as vasomotor symptoms, musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, and sleep disturbance. While menopausal hormone therapy is effective for some symptoms, non-pharmacological psychosocial interventions are increasingly recommended as alternatives or adjuncts. This review evaluates the efficacy of psychosocial interventions for managing physiological menopausal symptoms. METHODS: Six databases were systematically searched from inception to Octo

How is everyone doing? Baseline psychological distress and adaptive functioning among transgender, nonbinary, and cis youth presenting for intensive outpatient psychiatric services.

Psychological and psychosocial functioning of binary transgender and nonbinary youth has been understudied in settings treating individuals at risk for psychiatric hospitalization. Further, little is currently known about potential differences in baseline levels of psychiatric distress and adaptive functioning across gender-diverse youth and their psychiatrically distressed cisgender counterparts. Key differences may elucidate avenues for adapted treatment and protocols among youth presenting for psychiatric care. Archival data of 426 youth (Mage = 14.94, SD = 1.5 years) referred to a psychiat…

Temporal dynamics of psychosocial risk and resilience pathways in adolescent depressive and anxiety symptoms: a three-wave longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a critical neurodevelopmental stage marked by heightened sensitivity to psychosocial influences and increased risk for emotional disorders such as depression and anxiety. Although multiple psychosocial risk and protective factors have been identified, their interrelations and temporal patterning remain insufficiently understood, especially in Chinese populations. METHODS: We analyzed three-wave longitudinal data from 907 junior high school students in Northern China to examine associations among psychosocial stressors, contextual resources and mental health across ad

Cross-sectional and longitudinal relations among children's trust beliefs, psychological maladjustment and social relationships: are very high as well as very low trusting children at risk?

Four hundred and thirty-four children enrolled in school years 5 and 6 in the United Kingdom were administered measures of trust beliefs in peers/best friends and psychosocial functioning (internalized maladjustment, self-perceived social acceptance, social preference, and social exclusion) across an 8-month period (mean age = 9 years-9 months at Time 1). The relation between children's trust beliefs in peers or trust beliefs within best friend dyads and measures of psychosocial functioning conformed to a quadratic pattern. Psychosocial adjustment of latency-aged diabetics: determinants and relationship to control.

The relationship of psychosocial adjustment, family functioning, self-esteem, and diabetic control was studied in 20 latency-aged diabetic children and their parents. Moderate to severe adjustment problems were found in 11 (55%) of the patients. Child self-esteem, parental self-esteem, and family functioning, as scored by standard instruments, were all significantly greater in the group of children considered to be well-adjusted as compared to the maladjusted group (P less than .05 to .001). Of these, parental self-esteem appeared to correlate most closely with the child's adjustment. Twenty-f
