BACKGROUND: Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) is effective in muscle strengthening after orthopedic injury particularly when muscle activation failure is present, but the associated pain can be a barrier. METHODS: One hundred seventy patients were enrolled in this study and 141 patients were analyzed. Hand grip strength (HGS) was measured with Jamar dynamometer, muscle mass was measured with ultrasound, and sarcopenia diagnosis based on low muscle strength and low muscle mass. Muscle specific strength is calculated as HGS to muscle thickness (kg/cm) and cross-sectional area (kg/cm2). Osteoporosis is diagnosed if the T score was below - 2.5 or fragility fracture is present. The patients with both osteoporosis and sarcopenia were accepted as osteosarcopenia.

After anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, a decrease in muscle strength associated with muscle atrophy is frequently observed. The temporal and spatial effects of reconstructive surgery on muscle atrophy have not been examined in detail. This study aimed to 1) reveal the short and mid-term effects of reconstructive surgery on muscle atrophy, and 2) investigate the differences in the degree of atrophy after ACL reconstruction in the hindlimb muscles. In order to investigate the difficulty of quadriceps training in the presence of an effusion into the knee we examined 13 patients with chronic effusions by recording isometric muscle strength. Maximal strength was markedly lower in the presence of an effusion, and aspiration of the effusion produced a 13.6% increase in strength (p less than 0.01).
