Mechanism of the aminolysis of Fischer alkoxy and thiocarbene complexes: a DFT study.

B3LYP calculations have been carried out to study the reaction mechanism of the aminolysis of Fischer carbene complexes of the type (CO)(5)Cr=C(XMe)R (X = O and S; R = Me and Ph). We have explored different possible reaction mechanisms either through neutral or zwitterionic intermediates as well as a general base catalysis assisted by an ammonia molecule. Our results show that the most favorable pathway for the aminolysis of Fischer carbene complexes is through a stepwise reaction via a zwitterionic intermediate generated by the initial nucleophilic attack. We have found that the ammonia-catal

Conformational preferences of N-methoxycarbonyl proline dipeptide.

The conformational study on N-methoxycarbonyl-L-proline-N'-methylamide (Moc-Pro-NHMe, prolylcarbamate) is carried out using ab initio HF and density functional B3LYP methods with the self-consistent reaction field method in the gas phase and in solution (chloroform, acetonitrile, and water). The replacement of the N-acetyl group by the N-methoxycarbonyl group results in the changes in conformational preferences, populations for backbone and prolyl puckering, and barriers to cis-trans isomerization of the prolyl residue in the gas phase and in solution, although there are small changes in the g

Binuclear Robson type Ni(ii) complex as a reactant supplementing our knowledge of the orientation effects in electrochemical kinetics.

The multistep reduction of a binuclear Ni(ii) Robson-type complex with a multidentate template-like organic ligand (formed from 4-tert-butyl-2,6-diformylphenol and 1,3-diaminopropane), Ni(2)L, is studied using the electron photoemission technique. The number of transferred electrons corresponding to a single reduction wave is found to be 8 per complex species. This value is attributed to both complete Ni(ii) reduction (with Ni metal formation) and ligand reduction. Contributions of Ni(ii) and ligand to acceptor orbital were estimated. Three initial subsequent steps correspond to electron trans

Interaction of CHX(3) (X = F, Cl, Br) with HNO induces remarkable blue shifts of both C-H and N-H bonds.

The hydrogen-bonded complexes formed from interaction of trihalomethanes CHX(3) (X = F, Cl, Br) with nitrosyl hydride HNO were studied using ab initio MO calculations at the second-order perturbation theory (MP2/6-311++G(d,p)). Each interaction contains at least five separate equilibrium structures. Calculated binding energies range from 4 to 8 kJ mol(-1) with both ZPE and BSSE corrections. While CHBr(3) leads to the most stable complexes with HNO, CHF(3) forms the least stable counterparts. The strength of complexes thus tends to increase from F to Cl to Br, which is consistent with a decreas

DFT calculation of 1J(119Sn,13C) and 2J(119Sn,1H) coupling constants in di- and trimethyltin(IV) compounds.

We have tested several computational protocols, at the nonrelativistic DFT level of theory, for the calculation of 1J(119Sn, 13C) and 2J(119Sn, 1H) spin-spin coupling constants in di- and trimethyltin(IV) derivatives with various ligands. Quite a good agreement with experimental data has been found with several hybrid functionals and a double-zeta basis set for a set of molecules comprising tetra-, penta-, and hexa-coordinated tin(IV). Then, some of the protocols have been applied to the calculation of the 2J(119Sn, 1H) of the aquodimethyltin(IV) ion and dimethyltin(IV) complex with D-ribonic

Photoinduced electron transfer from tetrasulfonated porphyrin to benzoquinone revisited. The structural volume-normalized entropy change correlates with marcus reorganization energy.

Time-resolved laser-induced optoacoustic spectroscopy was used for the determination of the enthalpy, DeltaTH, and structural volume changes, DeltaTV, concomitant with triplet state formation upon excitation of meso-tetrakis(4-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin, TSPP(4-), as well as with the triplet state electron-transfer (ET) quenching by benzoquinone, BQ (DeltaRH and DeltaRV). The values of DeltaTH and DeltaTV for (3)TSPP(4-) formation in the presence of different cations (Li+, Na+, K+, NH4+, and Cs+) correlated with each other and afforded a value of DeltaTG = 140 +/- 20 kJ mol(-1), equal to the va

Effect of interfacial molecular recognition of non-surface-active species on the main characteristics of monolayers.

Recent progress in studies of the main characteristics of supramolecular assemblies formed by interfacial molecular recognition between an amphiphilic monolayer and a non-surface-active species, which is dissolved in the aqueous subphase, by complementary hydrogen bonding and/or electrostatic interaction at the air-water interface is reviewed. Systems consisting of an amphiphilic melamine-type monolayer and an pyrimidine derivative dissolved in the aqueous subphase are representative model systems for molecular recognition on the basis of complementary hydrogen bonding. Most of the studies hav

Molecular dynamics simulations of the TEM-1 beta-lactamase complexed with cephalothin.

Herein, we present theoretical results aimed at elucidating the origin of the kinetic preference for penicillins over cephalosporins characteristic of the TEM/SHV subgroup of class A beta-lactamases. First, we study the conformational properties of cephalothin showing that the C2-down conformer of the dihydrothiazine ring is preferred over the C2-up one by approximately 2 kcal/mol in solution (0.4-1.4 kcal/mol in the gas phase). Second, the TEM-1 beta-lactamase complexed with cephalothin is investigated by carrying out a molecular dynamics simulation. The DeltaG(binding) energy is then estimat

Structural and conformational properties of 1,1,1-trifluoro-2-propanol investigated by microwave spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations.

The microwave spectrum of 1,1,1-trifluoro-2-propanol, CF(3)CH(OH)CH(3), and one deuterated species, CF(3)CH(OD)CH(3), have been investigated in the 20.0-62.0 GHz spectral region at about -50 degrees C. The rotational spectrum of one of the three possible rotameric forms was assigned. This conformer is stabilized by an intramolecular hydrogen bond formed between the hydrogen atom of the hydroxyl group and the nearest fluorine atoms. The hydrogen bond is weak and assumed to be mainly a result of attraction between the O-H and the C-F bond dipoles, which are nearly antiparallel. The identified ro

A theoretical study of the aminolysis reaction of lysine 199 of human serum albumin with benzylpenicillin: consequences for immunochemistry of penicillins.

Herein, we present results of a computational study on benzylpenicillin attachment to Lys199 of human serum albumin via an aminolysis reaction. The internal geometry of the reactive part of the system was taken from previous work at the B3LYP/6-31+G* level on the water-assisted aminolysis reaction of a penicillin model compound (Díaz, N.; Suárez, D.; Sordo, T. L. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2000, 122, 6710--6719). The protein environment around Lys199, the 6-acylamino side chain, and the 2-methyl groups of benzylpenicillin were relaxed by carrying out geometry optimizations with a hybrid QM/MM method (P

Quantum yield and skin filtering effects on the formation rate of lumirubin.

Photocyclization of bilirubin to lumirubin in the skin of jaundiced infants exposed to blue-green light irradiation is considered to be the most important process for bilirubin elimination from the organism. The quantum yield phi LR of the bilirubin-->lumirubin photoreaction has been recently measured and found to vary with the excitation wavelength, with a peak at about 520 nm. The quantum yield phi ZE for the strongly competing reversible configurational photoisomerization of bilirubin has also been recently shown to be wavelength dependent and to decrease significantly in the long-wavelengt

Quantum chemical analysis of structure-activity relationships in nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

Ab initio, quantum chemical methods are being used to analyze and interpret structure-activity relationships in nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. The biological data for this study derive from full dose-response curves of the inhibitory potency of phenols, salicylates, and benzoates on prostaglandin production in mouse macrophages. To date, about 80 compounds have been assayed and from this group a sample of 30 has been selected for calculation. The results show a correlation between the potency of the active compounds and the orbital energy of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO)

Spin-orbit coupling and Jahn-Teller effect in Td symmetry: an ab initio study on the substitutional nickel defect in diamond.

We analyse the spin-orbit and Jahn-Teller interactions in [Formula: see text] symmetry that are relevant for substitutional transition metal defects in semiconductors. We apply our theory to the substitutional nickel defect in diamond and compute the appropriate fine-level structure and magneto-optical parameters by means of hybrid density functional theory. Our calculations confirm the intepretations of previous experimental findings that the 2.56 and 2.51 eV optical centres are associated with this defect. Our analysis of the electronic structure unravels possible mechanisms behind the obser

Studies on optical absorption and photoluminescence of thioglycerol-stabilized CdS quantum dots.

Nanoparticles of CdS were prepared at 303 K by aqueous precipitation method using CdSO4 and (NH4)2S in presence of the stabilizing agent thioglycerol. Adjustment of the thioglycerol (T) to ammonium sulphide (A) ratio (T:A) from 1:25 to 1:3.3 was done during synthesis and nanoparticles of different size were obtained. The prepared colloids were characterized by UV-vis and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopic studies. Prominent first and second excitonic transitions are observed in the UV-vis spectrum of the colloid prepared with a T:A ratio of 1:3.3. Particle size analysis was done using XRD, h

Theoretical insights on flavanones as antioxidants and UV filters: A TDDFT and NLMO study.

UV radiations can cause several irritations to the skin like sunburn, photo aging and even skin cancer. Sunscreens are widely used to protect the skin against these harmful radiations. One of the ingredients present in these sunscreens are organic molecules capable of absorbing these harmful radiations. Recently, the search is on for antioxidant molecules which can act as UV filters as they can facilitate photo protection. In this study, a computational investigation based on density functional theory (DFT) is attempted on flavanones namely pinocembrin, pinostrobin and alpinetin found in Boese

Quantum-enabled topological optimization of distributed energy storage for resilient black-start operations.

As modern power grids grow increasingly complex with the widespread deployment of renewable energy and distributed energy storage systems (ESS), ensuring robust and resilient black-start capabilities has become a critical challenge. Traditional black-start approaches, which typically rely on centralized hydro or diesel generators, are increasingly inadequate due to rising network complexity, the stochastic nature of renewables, and growing exposure to cyber-physical threats. To overcome these limitations, this study introduces a quantum-enhanced framework for dynamic network reconfiguration an

Turning non-superconducting elements into superconductors by quantum confinement and proximity.

Elemental good metals, including noble metals (Cu, Ag, Au) and severals-block elements, do not exhibit superconductivity in bulk at ambient pressure, primarily due to weak electron-phonon coupling that fails to overcome Coulomb repulsion. Quantum confinement in ultra-thin films is known to strongly reshape the electronic spectrum and the density of states (DOS) near the Fermi level, and in established superconductors it produces pronounced, often non-monotonic, thickness dependencies of the critical temperature. In this perspective, we examine whether quantum confinement alone, or in combinati

The influence of a solvent environment on direct non-covalent interactions between two molecules: A symmetry-adapted perturbation theory study of polarization tuning of π-π interactions by water.

High-level quantum chemical computations have provided significant insight into the fundamental physical nature of non-covalent interactions. These studies have focused primarily on gas-phase computations of small van der Waals dimers; however, these interactions frequently take place in complex chemical environments, such as proteins, solutions, or solids. To better understand how the chemical environment affects non-covalent interactions, we have undertaken a quantum chemical study of π-π interactions in an aqueous solution, as exemplified by T-shaped benzene dimers surrounded by 28 or 50 ex
