Apical radicular and intracanal surfaces of extracted teeth with apical lesions were examined by means of scanning electron microscopy. The distribution of apical and intracanal resorption areas varied with the presence of a granuloma or a cyst. Teeth bearing granulomas showed an apical resorption centered on the main foramina whereas the hard tissue underlying a cyst showed little or no resorption. Intracanal resorption was always marked in the apical third and more scattered in the middle and cervical third. The resorption disrupted the anatomical structures.

The working scheme is offered depicting the major stages of development of teeth-containing cysts. This provided a basis for determination of indications to preservation of the follicles of permanent teeth in different degrees of resorption of the cortical plate surrounding the follicle. OBJECTIVES: With only limited information available on dimensional changes after jaw cyst surgery, postoperative cyst shrinkage remains largely unpredictable. We aimed to propose a model for volumetric shrinkage based on time elapsed since cyst surgery.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We used data from patients that underwent cyst enucleation or decompression between 2007 and 2017 and had at least three computed tomography (CT) scans per patient. We evaluated the clinical appearance and results of surgical treatment in 8 patients with leg symptoms due to a lumbar intraspinal synovial cyst. The most frequent symptom was radicular leg pain due to unilateral single-root compression affecting the L5 or S1 nerve root. There were 2 cases with large cysts causing compression of the cauda equina, with spinal claudication as the main symptom. All cysts arose from arthrotic facet joints. Surgical excision gave good results and no recurrences have been noted 0.5-2 years postoperatively.
