Automatic Seizure Detection using Hierarchical Spectral-Temporal Feature Learning with an Imbalance-Aware Transformer.

Epilepsy manifests as a chronic neurological condition marked by recurrent seizures. Recent advances in computational analysis of Electroencephalography (EEG) signals have enabled new possibilities for identifying ictal events in extended recordings. This work develops a novel deep learning architecture that simultaneously resolves two fundamental challenges in automated seizure detection: comprehensive feature representation and class distribution imbalance. First, a multibranch neural network structure is proposed to process EEG signals across varying spectral and temporal resolutions. Then,

Brain age prediction model based on electroencephalogram signal and its application in children with autism spectrum disorders.

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of objective biomarkers for brain developmental abnormalities of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We used EEG and deep learning to conduct a brain aging study in ASD. METHODS: (1) A total of 659 healthy children and 98 ASD patients were retrospectively recruited. (2) An Auto-EEG-Brain AGE prediction model based on the Gate Recurrent Unit (GRU) neural network method was constructed. (3) Using the constructed model, we evaluated the difference between the brain age of ASD and that of healthy controls, and assessed the feasibility in the clinical assessment of ASD. RE

Learned iterative segmentation of highly variable anatomy from limited data: Applications to whole heart segmentation for congenital heart disease.

Training deep learning models that segment an image in one step typically requires a large collection of manually annotated images that captures the anatomical variability in a cohort. This poses challenges when anatomical variability is extreme but training data is limited, as when segmenting cardiac structures in patients with congenital heart disease (CHD). In this paper, we propose an iterative segmentation model and show that it can be accurately learned from a small dataset. Implemented as a recurrent neural network, the model evolves a segmentation over multiple steps, from a single use

Internal sensory models allow for balance control using muscle spindle acceleration feedback.

Motor control requires sensory feedback, and the nature of this feedback has implications for the tasks of the central nervous system (CNS): for an approximately linear mechanical system (e.g., a freely standing person, a rider on a bicycle), if the sensory feedback does not contain the state variables (i.e., joint position and velocity), then optimal control actions are based on an internal dynamical system that estimates these states from the available incomplete sensory feedback. Such a computational system can be implemented as a recurrent neural network (RNN), and it uses a sensory model

Feature Transformation for Efficient Blood Glucose Prediction in Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus Patients.

Diabetes Mellitus, a metabolic disease, causes the body to lose control over blood glucose regulation. With recent advances in self-monitoring systems, a patient can access their personalized glycemic profile and may utilize it for efficient prediction of future blood glucose levels. An efficient diabetes management system demands the accurate estimation of blood glucose levels, which, apart from using an appropriate prediction algorithm, depends on discriminative data representation. In this research work, a transformation of event-based data into discriminative continuous features is propose

Development and Validation of an Artificial Intelligence-Based Image Classification Method for Pathological Diagnosis in Patients With Extramammary Paget's Disease.

Extramammary Paget's disease (EMPD) is a rare, malignant cutaneous adenocarcinoma with a high recurrence rate after surgical resection. Early diagnosis of EMPD is critical as 15%-40% of cases progress into an invasive form and resulting in a dismal prognosis. However, EMPD can be a diagnostic challenge to pathologists, especially in the grassroots hospital, because of its low incidence and nonspecific clinical presentation. Although AI-enabled computer-aided diagnosis solutions have been extensively used in dermatological pathological image analysis to diagnose common skin cancers such as mela

Prediction of hand, foot, and mouth disease epidemics in Japan using a long short-term memory approach.

Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is a common febrile illness caused by enteroviruses in the Picornaviridae family. The major symptoms of HFMD are fever and a vesicular rash on the hand, foot, or oral mucosa. Acute meningitis and encephalitis are observed in rare cases. HFMD epidemics occur annually in Japan, usually in the summer season. Relatively large-scale outbreaks have occurred every two years since 2011. In this study, the epidemic patterns of HFMD in Japan are predicted four weeks in advance using a deep learning method. The time-series data were analyzed by a long short-term memor

Deep learning models to remix music for cochlear implant users.

The severe hearing loss problems that some people suffer can be treated by providing them with a surgically implanted electrical device called cochlear implant (CI). CI users struggle to perceive complex audio signals such as music; however, previous studies show that CI recipients find music more enjoyable when the vocals are enhanced with respect to the background music. In this manuscript source separation (SS) algorithms are used to remix pop songs by applying gain to the lead singing voice. This work uses deep convolutional auto-encoders, a deep recurrent neural network, a multilayer perc

Abnormal functional connectivity of the medial cortex in euthymic bipolar II disorder.

This project utilized functional MRI (fMRI) and a motor activation paradigm to investigate neural circuitry in euthymic bipolar II disorder. We hypothesized that circuitry involving the cortical midline structures (CMS) would demonstrate abnormal functional connectivity. Nineteen subjects with recurrent bipolar disorder and 18 controls were studied using fMRI and a motor activation paradigm. We used functional connectivity analyses to identify circuits with aberrant connectivity. We found increased functional connectivity among bipolar subjects compared to healthy controls in two CMS circuits.

Using a speech perception neural network computer simulation to contrast neuroanatomic versus neuromodulatory models of auditory hallucinations.

A number of studies suggest that schizophrenia may arise from overzealous pruning of synapses that are an extension of normal developmental pruning during adolescence. Moreover, there has been a long history of studies suggesting that this disorder arises from alterations in the dopaminergic neuromodulatory systems. In order to further assess and compare these two hypotheses, a computer simulation of some aspects of speech perception was developed utilizing a recurrent, backpropagation model of working memory previously reported by Elman . This system was found to produce spontaneous percepts

Feature extraction for systolic heart murmur classification.

Heart murmurs are often the first signs of pathological changes of the heart valves, and they are usually found during auscultation in the primary health care. Distinguishing a pathological murmur from a physiological murmur is however difficult, why an "intelligent stethoscope" with decision support abilities would be of great value. Phonocardiographic signals were acquired from 36 patients with aortic valve stenosis, mitral insufficiency or physiological murmurs, and the data were analyzed with the aim to find a suitable feature subset for automatic classification of heart murmurs. Machine Learning-Based Human Detection Using Active Non-Line-of-Sight Laser Sensing.

Active non-line-of-sight (NLOS) human detection aims to infer the presence of hidden individuals by analyzing indirectly reflected photons between a relay surface and occluded targets. In this study, a single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) and time-correlated single-photon counting (TCSPC)-based acquisition system were used to measure time-photon waveforms in controlled NLOS environments designed to represent post-disaster rubble scenarios. Although the effective temporal resolution of the system is limited by the detector timing jitter and laser pulse width, the recorded transient signals reta

Left ventromedial prefrontal cortex inhibitory rTMS as an anti-stress intervention in opioid use disorder: Trial design.

BACKGROUND: In people with substance use disorders (SUDs), stress-exposure can impair executive function, and increase craving and likelihood of drug-use recurrence. Research shows that acute stressors increase drug-seeking behavior; however, mechanisms underlying this effect are incompletely understood. The Competing Neurobehavioral Decisions System theory posits that persons with SUDs may have hyperactive limbic reward circuitry and hypoactive executive control circuitry. OBJECTIVE: To investigate how inhibitory repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) targeting the left ventrome

DeepSSM: A Deep Learning Framework for Statistical Shape Modeling from Raw Images.

Statistical shape modeling is an important tool to characterize variation in anatomical morphology. Typical shapes of interest are measured using 3D imaging and a subsequent pipeline of registration, segmentation, and some extraction of shape features or projections onto some lower-dimensional shape space, which facilitates subsequent statistical analysis. Many methods for constructing compact shape representations have been proposed, but are often impractical due to the sequence of image preprocessing operations, which involve significant parameter tuning, manual delineation, and/or quality c

Cortical Drive to Breathe during Wakefulness in Patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: The obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) involves recurrent sleep-related upper airways (UA) collapse. UA mechanical properties and neural control are altered, imposing a mechanical load on inspiration. UA collapse does not occur during wakefulness, hence arousal-dependent compensation. Experimental inspiratory loading in normal subjects elicits respiratory-related cortical activity. The objective of this study was to test whether awake OSAS patients would exhibit a similar cortical activity. DESIGN: Descriptive physiology study. SETTING: Sleep laboratory in a large univ
