A randomized trial of individual tutoring for elementary school children with reading and behavior difficulties.

Children in Grades K-5, selected for reading and behavior problems, received individual tutoring in a program which aimed to detail a hierarchy of reading skills, locate the point on the hierarchy at which each child should work, and provide enthusiastic social reinforcement for successes. Children were randomly assigned to higher or lower frequency tutoring (one 45-min. session every 1.6 days vs every 8.3 days). The higher frequency group progressed significantly faster in reading than the lower frequency group. Both groups progressed much faster during the time of the intervention than they

Is accurate self-monitoring necessary for people with acquired neurological problems to benefit from the use of differential reinforcement methods?

Challenging behaviour exhibited by people with acquired neurological problems must be managed if their maximum rehabilitation potential is to be achieved. Differential reinforcement of low rates of responding (DRL) appears to be an effective method for this. The effectiveness of DRL in the presence of severe cognitive deficits, including disorders of attention and memory, is nevertheless surprising. Indeed, such difficulties may prevent individuals with brain injury benefiting from operant conditioning procedures because of impairment of the central executive component of working memory. Conse

Behavioral interventions to reduce maladaptive responding in youth with dual sensory impairment. An analysis of direct and concurrent effects.

Many persons who have multiple sensory, physical, and developmental disabilities display behaviors that interfere significantly with adaptive functioning and social acceptance. In this investigation, the efficacy of multiple component behavioral interventions for reducing maladaptive responding exhibited by two individuals with dual sensory impairment and profound mental retardation was evaluated. Results indicated that differential reinforcement of other behavior (DRO) approaches were not effective in either case. However, when deceleration procedures (overcorrection or brief physical restrai

Exploring Conceptualizations of COVID-19 Risk in Ideologically Distinct Online Communities: A Computational Grounded Theory Analysis.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on societies and economies around the globe, and experts warn about the potential for similar crises in the future. Risk communication theories underscore that while the potential for harm is objective, risk perception is a subjective, socially derived interpretation. While there is broad literature on the social construction of risk, fewer studies examine the role of communities-online or offline-in developing and reinforcing distinct interpretations of the same risk event. During COVID-19, online communities emerged as individuals s

Structural analysis and causal loop modelling: an integrated systems approach to analysing perinatal service delivery in carceral settings in Ontario, Canada.

BACKGROUND: In Ontario, Canada, incarcerated individuals and their newborns have adverse health outcomes. Perinatal care delivery in these settings is complex and fragmented across health, social service and carceral systems. This study aimed to apply and demonstrate an integrated systems-based analytical approach to examine dynamic interactions within carceral perinatal care and to identify influential variables and leverage points for policy and service improvement. METHODS: Using qualitative interview data from individuals who experienced incarceration while pregnant and from healthcare an

Effects of the α-2 Adrenergic Receptor Agonists Lofexidine and Guanfacine on Food-Cocaine Choice in Socially Housed Cynomolgus Monkeys.

Although norepinephrine (NE) does not appear to play a prominent role in mediating the abuse-related effects of cocaine, studies have indicated that NE α-2 receptor agonists can attenuate reinstatement of extinguished cocaine self-administration in rats and monkeys and can decrease cocaine craving in humans. In the present studies, we examined the effects of two α-2 receptor agonists, lofexidine and guanfacine, on choice between food and cocaine (0.0-0.1 mg/kg per injection) in cynomolgus monkeys. Male and female subjects were housed in stable same-sex social groups of four; social rank did no

Emergence of cooperation in nonlinear higher-order public goods games.

Evolutionary game theory has provided substantial contributions to explain the emergence of cooperation under unfavorable conditions in ecology, economics, and the social sciences. Recently, inspired by newly available empirical evidence on group interactions, higher-order networks have emerged as a natural framework to encode multiplayer games in structured populations. Here we study the emergence of cooperation in nonlinear public goods games on hypergraphs, where collective reinforcement captures the synergistic or discounting effect associated with each additional cooperator. In well-mixed

Case Report: The SIX Cs model integrating empathy: a structured cognitive framework for psychological first aid during acute threat.

This article presents a theory-driven case study examining the integration of empathy within the SIX Cs Model of psychological first aid (PFA) during a real-time, life-threatening event involving two children trapped in a terrorist attack in Israel. Empathy, encompassing cognitive, emotional, and compassionate components, plays a vital role in psychological support; however, its application during acute stress requires a structured approach that preserves cognitive functioning. The SIX Cs Model targets core features of the acute stress response (ASR), including confusion, perceptual narrowing,

The development of opioid vaccines as a novel strategy for the treatment of opioid use disorder and overdose prevention.

Opioid use disorder (OUD) affects over 40 million people worldwide, creating significant social and economic burdens. Medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) is often considered the primary treatment approach for OUD. MOUD, including methadone, buprenorphine, and naltrexone, is effective for some, but its benefits may be limited by poor adherence to treatment recommendations. Immunopharmacotherapy offers an innovative approach by using vaccines to generate antibodies that neutralize opioids, blocking them from crossing the blood-brain barrier and reducing their psychoactive effects. To date,

Dual-substance use disorder couples: An integrative review and proposed theoretical model.

Committed romantic relationships between two individuals with Substance Use Disorder (or dual-SUD couples) are prevalent. Dual-SUD couples have poor treatment engagement and outcomes. Research has established a reciprocal link between relationship dynamics (e.g., conflict, intimacy) and substance use. Thus, the couple's relationship presents a distinct social context for both partner's substance use. Dual-SUD couples face unique challenges due to substance use being a shared behavior that may serve as a rewarding source of compatibility, closeness, and short-term relationship satisfaction desp

A Causal Role of Right Temporoparietal Junction in Prosocial Learning: A Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Study.

Prosocial behavior is a common and important aspect of everyday social life. To behave prosocially, we need to learn the consequences of our actions for other people, known as prosocial learning. Previous studies have identified the right temporoparietal junction (rTPJ) as the critical neurological substrate for prosocial behavior. However, little is known about the causal role of the rTPJ in prosocial learning. To clarify the role of the rTPJ in prosocial learning, we used a reinforcement learning paradigm and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). A total of 75 participants were rec

Later stages of acute stress impair reinforcement-learning and feedback sensitivity in decision making.

Whereas the effects of the early stages of acute stress seem to improve learning and increase loss aversion in decision making, in later stages, the opposite has been found, an impairment in decision making probably due to higher reward-attraction, as the STARS approach suggests. This study aims to investigate the effects of the later stages of acute stress on decision making and its underlying processes using a computational model. We hypothesized that stress would affect underlying cognitive strategies during decision making. Ninety-five participants were randomly distributed into two groups

Pause for thought: response perseveration and personality in gambling.

In a sample of normal volunteers, response perseveration (RP) on a computerised gambling task, the card perseveration task, was examined under two conditions: No pause (Standard task) and a 5-s pause (Pause task) following feedback from previous bet. Behavioural outcomes comprised number of cards played (and cash won/lost) and latency of response. Individual differences in these outcomes were conceptualised in terms of the reinforcement sensitivity theory of personality. Results showed that, on the Standard task only, sub-scales of the Carver and White (J Pers Social Psychol 67:319-333, 1994)

Long term outcomes of pharmacological treatments for opioid dependence: does methadone still lead the pack?

The aim of this review was to update and summarize the scientific knowledge on the long term outcomes of the different pharmacological treatment options for opioid dependence currently available and to provide a critical discussion on the different treatment options based on these results. We performed a literature search using the PubMed databases and the reference lists of the identified articles. Data from research show that the three pharmacological options reviewed are effective treatments for opioid dependence with positive long term outcomes. However, each one has its specific target po

Wheelchair use: a physical sign in gastroenterological practice.

Diagnosis of functional abdominal pain requires exclusion of organic causes, and many patients undergo considerable investigation. A positive physical sign supporting a functional diagnosis could therefore be of benefit. Wheelchair use specifically for abdominal symptoms was suspected to represent such a sign. Review of 300 consecutive new referrals to a gastroenterology clinic revealed 10 wheelchair users. In four women the chair was used because of the abdominal condition. The final diagnosis (with follow-up to at least 12 months) was functional abdominal pain in each of these cases. All fou

Protective equipment as treatment for stereotypic hand mouthing: sensory extinction or punishment effects?

We examined the effects of noncontingent and contingent protective equipment as treatment for self-injurious hand mouthing exhibited by 2 individuals with profound mental retardation. Results of a functional analysis assessment revealed that neither subject's self-injury was maintained by social reinforcement: One subject's self-injury was cyclical in nature; the other's occurred during all assessment conditions but most frequently when left alone. In the noncontingent-equipment condition, oven mitts were placed on the individual's hands at the beginning of a session and remained on throughout

Noncompliant behavior of people with mental retardation.

Literature pertaining to noncompliant behavior of people with mental retardation was reviewed. Noncompliant behavior was considered in terms of antecedents (characteristics of instructions), behaviors (characteristics of tasks being refused), and consequences (environmental results of noncompliance). Literature pertaining to nondisabled "oppositional" children was incorporated along with literature pertaining to persons with mental retardation. Research involving antecedent conditions suggested that noncompliance is more likely when instructions are vague and interrupted with other instruction

Psychological inoculation can reduce susceptibility to misinformation in large rational agent networks.

The unchecked spread of misinformation is recognized as an increasing threat to public, scientific and democratic health. Online networks are a contributing cause of this spread, with echo chambers and polarization indicative of the interplay between the search behaviours of users and reinforcement processes within the system they inhabit. Recent empirical work has focused on interventions aimed at inoculating people against misinformation, yielding success on the individual level. However, given the evolving, dynamic information context of online networks, important questions remain regarding
