Bonding to zirconia: Effects of translucency and cusp inclinations using an experimental methodology.

Purpose To investigate the effects of translucency and cusp inclination on the micro-shear bond strength (µSBS) of zirconia to self-adhesive resin cement (SARC).Methods Sixty U-shaped zirconia specimens with 1.0 mm thickness consisting of three planes (0°, 20°, and 30°) simulating different cusp inclinations were fabricated from zirconia blocks of high, moderate, and low translucency (n=20). SARC was bonded to the specimen and light-cured for 40 s. The µSBS was tested using a universal testing machine with a cross-head at a speed of 0.5 mm/min and fracture mode was observed using a stereomicro

Morphology of a Hidden Tube: Resin Injection and CT Scanning Reveal the Three-dimensional Structure of the Spiracle in the Japanese Bullhead Shark Heterodontus japonicus (Chondrichthyes; Heterodontiformes; Heterodontidae).

The spiracle of elasmobranchs (sharks, skates, and rays) is a gill-slit-derived tube located behind the eye. Its inner structure was well studied in the late nineteenth to early twentieth century, but its entire morphology has rarely been characterized and is poorly understood. The present study shows the three-dimensional morphology of the spiracular tube for the first time, using resin injection and CT scanning, in the Japanese bullhead shark. The spiracular tube is characterized by the presence of two caeca (dorsal and ventral spiracular caeca) on the medial wall of the spiracular tube and

Adhesive/Dentin interface: the weak link in the composite restoration.

Results from clinical studies suggest that more than half of the 166 million dental restorations that were placed in the United States in 2005 were replacements for failed restorations. This emphasis on replacement therapy is expected to grow as dentists use composite as opposed to dental amalgam to restore moderate to large posterior lesions. Composite restorations have higher failure rates, more recurrent caries, and increased frequency of replacement as compared to amalgam. Penetration of bacterial enzymes, oral fluids, and bacteria into the crevices between the tooth and composite undermin

Direct pulp capping with a self-etching adhesive system: histopathologic evaluation in dogs' teeth.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated histopathologically the response of pulp and periradicular tissues after pulp capping with an all-in-one self-etching adhesive system in dogs' teeth. STUDY DESIGN: Forty teeth of 4 dogs were assigned to 3 groups according to the pulp capping material: G1 (n = 20): self-etching adhesive system; G2 (n = 10): Ca(OH)(2); G3 (n = 10): zinc oxide-eugenol. The animals were killed 7 and 70 days after pulp capping. The pieces containing the pulp-capped teeth were removed and processed for histologic analysis. RESULTS: At 7 days, no dentin bridge formation was observed;

Intraradicular splinting of a horizontally fractured central incisor: a case report.

This case report presents the endodontic management of a horizontally fractured right incisor involving healing with granulation tissue using an intraradicular splinting technique. We also discuss the spontaneous healing of the fractured left central incisor with calcified tissue. A composite resin splint was made for all of the upper anterior teeth. The root canal of the right incisor was temporarily filled with calcium hydroxide slurry. The intraradicular splinting involved placing a file in the canal. Sealer was introduced into the canal and then a no. 110 K file was fixed in the canal with

Comparative Quasi-Static Compressive Loading Performance of Two Ultrathin Ceramic Occlusal Veneers for Minimally Invasive Restorations.

BACKGROUND: In the field of minimally invasive restorative dentistry, ultrathin (<0.5 mm thickness) ceramic occlusal veneers are increasing being used as alternatives to full-coverage crowns, particularly for mild occlusal wear and not deep caries. However, only limited research attention has been given to how marked reduction in the thickness of a veneer restoration affects its mechanical performance. The purpose of the present in vitro study was to compare the performance of restorations that comprised a 0.3 mm thick zirconia veneer to the case when a lithium disilicate veneer was used, unde

Comparison of microleakage under orthodontic brackets bonded with five different adhesive systems: in vitro study.

BACKGROUND: Orthodontic treatment is associated with numerous adverse side effects, such as enamel discoloration, demineralization or even caries. The presence of microleakage between the enamel and the adhesive and between the adhesive and the base of the orthodontic bracket allows penetration of the bacteria, molecules, and liquids into the enamel and can lead to unpleasant "white spot lesions" or secondary caries beneath and around the brackets. The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate microleakage in five adhesive systems commonly used in orthodontic practice for bonding brackets. M

Surgical repair of invasive cervical root resorption with calcium-enriched mixture cement: a case report.

Invasive cervical resorption (ICR) occurs in the cervical area of the teeth due to the formation of a soft tissue that progressively resorbs dentin. The disease is asymptomatic unless the pulp is exposed. This article presents a case involving a mandibular canine that was treated with a calcium-enriched mixture (CEM) cement. After a full mucoperiosteal flap was performed, the soft tissue was curetted away and the cavity filled with CEM biomaterial. One week later, the supragingival surface of the CEM was polished and covered with composite resin. At a 1-year follow-up visit, the pulp was healt

Synergistic effects of bacteria, enzymes, and cyclic mechanical stresses on the bond strength of composite restorations.

Predicting how tooth and dental material bonds perform in the mouth requires a deep understanding of degrading factors. Yet, this understanding is incomplete, leading to significant uncertainties in designing and evaluating new dental adhesives. The durability of dental bonding interfaces in the oral microenvironment is compromised by bacterial acids, salivary enzymes, and masticatory fatigue. These factors degrade the bond between dental resins and tooth surfaces, making the strength of these bonds difficult to predict. Traditionally studied separately, a combined kinetic analysis of these in
