A case is presented of retroperitoneal fibrosis secondary to post-traumatic retroperitoneal hematoma, resulting in duodenal obstruction six years after the traumatic event. The fibrotic encasement of the duodenum and the head of pancreas made it necessary to perform an "en bloc" resection, with excellent results both immediately and after three years of follow-up.

Ct assessment of the lymphatic system in the area of the retroperitoneum and the lower mediastinum had so far been limited to pathologically enlarged lymphatic nodes of more than 2 cm diameter. Improvements in apparatus construction and increased clinical experience have made it possible to include lymphatic nodes of smaller size, although it is often difficult to distinguish them clearly from the other formations in those regions. The following article deals with the structures recognisable via CT, such as arteries, veins, lymphatic chains and crura of the diaphragm, systematically and by mea

The value of computed tomography (CT) in the diagnosis and management of retroperitoneal masses is discussed. Neoplastic, inflammatory, and hemorrhagic conditions are shown. In addition to facilitating the detection of these mass lesions, CT is especially valuable in allowing accurate biopsies and aspiration to be performed and in the follow-up of the patient.

BACKGROUND: Ganglioneuromas (GNs) arise from the Schwann cells, ganglion cells, and neuronal tissues, and are extremely rare, slow-growing, benign tumors. GN has usually grown very large when it is diagnosed since no specific clinical symptoms or laboratory findings indicating GN are available, especially when it occurs in the retroperitoneal space. Total resection of the tumor is the recommended treatment. We present the imaging and pathological findings of a giant adrenal GN in a child. A 7-year-old boy suffered from nausea and postprandial vomiting for 1 week with no precipitating factors. …

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic adrenalectomy currently is performed using either a retroperitoneal or transperitoneal approach. The retroperitoneal approach is ideal for patients with small lesions who have undergone previous intraabdominal surgery. This study aimed to explore transvaginal retroperitoneal right and left adrenalectomies in porcine and cadaver models.
METHODS: Right and left adrenalectomies were performed for two female pigs. With the pig supine under general anaesthesia, the retroperitoneal space was entered with a double-channel endoscope (Storz) through a posterior colpotomy. A retr…

PURPOSE: Transperitoneal and retroperitoneal approaches to video-assisted aortofemoral bypass were developed and compared using gasless laparoscopic techniques in a porcine model.
METHODS: Ten pigs were randomized to either a transperitoneal or retroperitoneal approach. Aortic clamp time, total operative time, and complications were recorded. Both operations used an external lift device to maintain the working space. Retroperitoneal operations first used serial balloon inflation to dissect the retroperitoneum. After exposure of the infrarenal aorta, a graft was tunneled under endoscopic visua

Retroperitoneal tumors are lesions with diverse pathological subtypes that originate from the retroperitoneal space; ~40% of these tumors are benign. Due to such lesions often surrounding and associating with vital abdominal blood vessels, a complete surgical resection is difficult. The current study presents a novel surgical approach, known as fractionation, through which a benign retroperitoneal tumor surrounding important abdominal blood vessels was completely resected. A 21-year-old man was admitted to The First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University (Chongqing, China), presen…

BACKGROUND: Giant renal angiomyolipomas (AMLs) may lead to complications including flank pain, hematuria, hypertension, retroperitoneal hemorrhage and even death. Giant AMLs which grow around renal hilar vessels and the ureter are rare. Most previous reports on the treatment of giant renal AMLs have focused on open surgery or a transperitoneal approach, with few studies on the retroperitoneal approach for large AMLs. We here report a case of giant renal hilum AML successfully treated with robot-assisted laparoscopic nephron sparing surgery the retroperitoneal approach, with a one-year follow-u

Retroperitoneal bleeding is a rare and difficult to diagnose condition, defined as bleeding in the retroperitoneal space without associated trauma or iatrogenic manipulation. It has been associated with hematologic diseases and malignancies and is more common in patients receiving systemic anticoagulation. A 50-year-old man on aspirin presented with abdominal pain. Physical examination revealed abdominal tenderness and a palpable mass at the left abdominal area. An abdominal CT revealed a spontaneous retroperitoneal hematoma due to bleeding of an intraparenchymal branch of the left renal arter…

BACKGROUND: Primary abdominal and retroperitoneal cavernous hemangioma is a vascular tumor and rarely seen in the clinic. Due to the lack of specific imaging features, retroperitoneal cavernous hemangioma cannot be diagnosed accurately. Some symptoms may develop with the enlargement of lesion volume or the occurrence of complications such as rupture or oppression. We report here a special case who was admitted with chronic abdominal pain. Admission examination suggested a retroperitoneal lymphatic duct cyst. Laparoscopic resection of the retroperitoneal mass was performed, and histological exa

INTRODUCTION: The retroperitoneum can host a wide spectrum of pathologies, including a variety of rare benign tumours and malignant neoplasms that can be either primary or metastatic lesions. Retroperitoneal tumours can cause a diagnostic dilemma and present several therapeutic challenges because of their rarity, relative late presentation and anatomical location, often in close relationship with several vital structures in the retroperitoneal space.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted using PubMed. Relevant international articles published in the last ten y…

BACKGROUND: Primary retroperitoneal tumor is a rare type of tumor with insidious onset, large tumor size at the time of diagnosis, and often … had been worsening for half a month. Abdominopelvic enhanced helical computed tomography revealed a retroperitoneal space-occupying lesion about 11.3 cm × 9.1 cm in size, with well-defined borders in the upper left quadrant of the abdomen. The lesion compressed the left renal artery and vein resulting in vascular displacement and deformation. A multidisciplinary team d …

BACKGROUND: The retroperitoneal approach preserves the peritoneal cavity and its envelope. The benefits of laparoscopic retroperitoneal approach to the kidney and the adrenal gland are well known. The pancreas may represent another potential target. Whereas NOTES transperitoneal distal pancreatectomy has been reported, the retroperitoneal approach, which may combine the advantages of peritoneal preservation with those of no scar surgery, has never been explored. We report the feasibility of NOTES transvaginal retroperitoneal pancreatectomy in a porcine model.
METHODS: With the pig supine, und

Disk space sepsis is a recognized complication of spinal surgery, but infection by a penetrating fistula from a retroperitoneal or pelvic abscess is rare. The lack of localizing symptoms, the insidious disease process, and the clinical and myelographic findings simulating a herniated disk syndrome obscure the true diagnosis and make identification of the primary infection difficult. A good result was obtained in this case by laminectomy and drainage of the lumbosacral disk space, followed by a diagnostic fistulogram and evacuation of a large pelvic abscess.

RATIONALE: Psoas abscesses generally arise from a contiguous intra-abdominal or pelvic infectious process or hematogenous spreading of bacteria. The serum β-human chorionic gonadotropin has been used to detect normal or ectopic pregnancy. It also can be utilized in following up carcinomas.
PATIENT CONCERNS: Here, we reported a case of a 47-year-old woman who presented with a left psoas mass presumptively diagnosed as an abscess secondary to lumbar tuberculosis In addition, the patient had abnormal increase of β-human chorionic gonadotropin. The computed tomography (CT) scan and magnetic reson
