In the epidemiology of schistosomiasis, the cercarial index (CI) has been used for several purposes, including the identification of the species of vertebrate host involved in transmission in a particular setting. The CI of samples of Schistosoma mansoni of human (BH) and rodent (CMO) origin have now been compared, in an attempt to identify morphological markers on cercariae that would indicate whether the eggs from which the cercariae have developed were produced in humans or in rodents. After silver-nitrate impregnation of the cercariae, the CI (and their reaction norms) for the antero-dorsa

OBJECTIVE: To review evidence regarding the effects of male age on germinal and heritable chromosomal abnormalities using available human and rodent studies and to evaluate possible underlying mechanisms.
DESIGN: Review of English language-published research using MEDLINE database, excluding case reports and anecdotal data.
RESULT(S): There was little evidence from offspring or germ cell studies for a generalized male age effect on autosomal aneuploidy, except in rodents. Sex chromosomal nondisjunction increased with age in both human and rodent male germ cells. Both human and rodent data sh

The present study examines the anatomic and histological characteristics of the female genital tract of the wild brush-tailed porcupine (Atherurus africanus). A description of the macroscopic and microscopic features of the tubular genital organs based on observations made in 18 wild adult females is presented. The histological stains used were haematoxylin and eosin, 1% toluidine blue, PAS-haematoxylin and Masson's trichrome. Observations indicate that the fimbriated infundibulum of the oviduct completely surrounds and is attached to the entire ovarian surface. The uterus is bicornuate, being

The purpose of this study was to refine our knowledge of the natural host relationships of Whitewater Arroyo (WWA) virus. Two hundred eight rodents, representing nine species, were captured in July 1999 on the Chaparral Wildlife Management Area in southern Texas and tested for evidence of arenavirus infection. Antibody to an arenavirus was found in seven (21.9%) of 32 southern plains woodrats (Neotoma micropus) and none of 168 other rodents. Infectious WWA virus was isolated from four antibody-positive southern plains woodrats, one of 25 antibody-negative southern plains woodrats, and none of

The Skene's (paraurethral) gland is the histologic homologue to the male prostate. Much experimental work has been done on women and on various rodents. In this study we describe for the first time the anatomical and histological characteristics of the paraurethral gland in the plain viscacha (Lagostomus maximus maximus). This gland is formed by tubuloalveolar adenomers surrounded by connective tissue and smooth muscle fibers. The adenomers are lined by cuboidal or columnar epithelium. In the lumen of the adenomers, PAS positive secretions could be detected. The conduits are lined by bi-strati

Monthly collections of rodents were conducted in Phitsanulok Province, central Thailand in 1993 to investigate the role of the mite Blankaartia acuscurellaris as a vector of scrub typhus. Overall, a total of 41 rodents were collected and examined for the presence of the red colored larvae of B. acuscutellaris and yellow larvae of Leptotrombidium deliense and Ascoshoengastia sp. A total of 787 B. acuscutellaris and 1390 yellow larvae were placed into pools, triturated and isolation of Orientia tsutsugamushi attempted in laboratory mice. The sera of 8 of the collected rodents had elevated antibo

The structure and ultrastructure of the pineal gland of the degu or trumpet-tailed rat (Octodon degus), a rodent inhabiting tropical-equatorial areas, was examined under light and electron microscopy. On the basis of its form, size, and location, the pineal gland of the degu is classified as a proximal or "A" type. The connective tissue appeared poorly developed and the gland contained non-fenestrated capillaries. A single population of typical pinealocytes was found. In addition, a small number of glial cells and cells with electron dense bodies appeared scattered throughout the gland. Cells

As a part of our comparative morphological study of mechanoreceptors in rodent oral mucosae, the hard palate of the mongolian gerbil (a kind of sand rat) was investigated by light and electron microscopy. Subepithelial connective tissue papillae of palatine rugae contained a dense distribution of lamellated corpuscles that showed an ultrastructure similar to that of Meissner corpuscles of primates. The corpuscles in the palate of the mongolian gerbil, however, frequently formed compound large corpuscles with a palisade-like extension. Antemolar rugae predominated in containing such compound "M

On the basis of a ten year study, the authors provide the present knowledge concerning the epidemiology of alveolar hydatid disease in France. The various hosts involved in the life-cycle of the parasite are enumerated. Six small rodent species act as natural intermediate hosts with marked differences in susceptibility. The definitive hosts are: i) wild foxes; 30 per cent of them are found parasitized in hyperendemic areas; ii) domestic carnivores especially dogs and to a lesser extent cats. Until the present work, the presence of infected domestic dogs and cats was not demonstrated in France.

In winter, hibernating mammals enter a long phase of lethargy which is characterized by low body temperature, depressed metabolism and minimal release of metabolic substrates from endogenous fuel stores. Periodically, they spontaneously warm themselves to regain the euthermic state. These arousals are, by contrast, times of high release and consumption of endogenous substrates. Insulin and glucagon may contribute to the control of both contrasting metabolic periods. The secretion and metabolic effects of these two hormones were investigated in two hibernators: the hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus

Following their epidemiological investigation on the cutaneous leishmaniasis focus of Keur Moussa, the authors study the sandfly fauna. The species Phlebotomus duboscqi is abundant (1,532 samples out of 8,411 sandflies collected between December 1976 and June 1979) and located inside the rodent burrows which have been found to be their larval breeding sites. Five P. duboscqi females out of 356 dissected were infected by Leishmania major promastigotes.
