BACKGROUND: Field-based contact sports, including American football and rugby are among those with the highest sport-related concussion (SRC) rates. Regarding SRC treatment, gradual return-to-play (RTP) protocols are commonly used, however variability in RTP protocols between sporting bodies and scholastic institutions makes accurately interpreting published SRC severity data difficult.

In brief Prompt recognition and treatment of rhabdomyolysis may prevent further muscle damage and serious renal complications. The patient presented here, an unconditioned rugby player with moderately severe exertional rhabdomyolysis, had thigh pain, thigh and knee swelling, and myoglobinuria. His rehabilitation focused on a well-monitored, progressive exercise program after his muscle injury resolved.

Rectus femoris injuries are extremely common in athletes, particularly in soccer players, rugby player, and sprinters. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) plays a key role in diagnosis, prognosis, and rehabilitation of these injuries. The current article discusses current concepts in the diagnosis and treatment of rectus femoris injuries in elite athletes, including a discussion of the less well known myofascial injuries and key prognostic factors as seen at MR imaging.

Common first ray disorders in athletes include hallux rigidus, turf toe, sand toe, sesamoid disorders, and fractures. First ray disorders in athletes frequently are treated by nonoperative methods including relative rest, ice, elevation, activity modification, shoe modification, and insoles.

A case of an isolated volar dislocation of the second and third carpometacarpal (CMC) joints in an 18-year-old man is described. He presented following a game of rugby unable to move his hand or wrist. He was managed by manipulation and K-Wire fixation. Hand function was excellent following wire removal and mobilization. This is an extremely rare injury, easily missed. The mechanism of injury described leads to comparison with the Lisfranc injury of the foot.
