We describe two infants in whom extensive necrosis developed secondary to anaerobic infection at the site of scalp electrode placement. One infant required skin grafting. Pus from abscesses at the site of electrode placement should be cultured for anaerobic as well as aerobic bacteria.

Cancer of the scalp usually presents itself as a superficial lesion which is first noticed by the patient. However, there is often a long delay on the part of the individual in seeking medical attention. When he finally does seek medical attention, his tumors are often undertreated and require multiple procedures. This paper discusses the surgical resection that depends upon the depth of tumor penetration, the modalities of reconstruction, and our experiences with CO2 laser resection of a large scalp lesion.

Rapid whitening of scalp hair developed during a three-month period along with a diffuse, subtotal alopecia in a patient. Immunofluorescence microscopy of biopsy material showed prominent deposits of IgG and IgM in a granular pattern in the epithelium of the lower portions of hair follicles. Some return of the color and amount of scalp hair occurred within a year, but occasional bouts of hair loss continued to occur. Scalp wounds attended by loss of substance are commonly managed either by direct skin grafting or a large transposition flap of adjacent scalp and skin grafting of the donor site defect. Either of these methods has all of the inherent disadvantages of the results of skin grafting: insensate, glabrous surface devoid of hair, recurrent ulceration after minor trauma, and, finally, abnormal appearance. Nine members of four generations of a kindred had an autosomal dominant syndrome in which congenital scalp defects were associated with abnormalities of the hands and feet. Radiographically apparent, circumscribed defects of the skull were an additional inconsistent feature. Genetic counseling is made difficult by varying phenotypic expression of the gene.
