We report the synthesis and properties of a novel class of nanocrystals with mixed dimensionality: a dot-in-plate core/shell nanostructure. This system was synthesized by growing a flat, disk-shaped, CdS shell on spherical CdSe cores. The anisotropic pressure induced by the shell drastically splits the first exciton fine structure in two: the "heavy hole" and "light hole" states become separated by up to 65 meV. Poly(2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl phosphorylcholine) (PMPC) is soluble in either 2-propanol or water but becomes insoluble in certain alcohol-rich 2-propanol/water mixtures. We have exploited this unusual cononsolvency behavior in order to prepare new biocompatible sterically stabilized PMPC latexes via nonaqueous dispersion polymerization in 2-propanol/water mixtures. All polymerizations were conducted in the presence of monomethoxy-capped poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate (PEGMA) as a reactive stabilizer, with some formulations including ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as a cross-linker.

A 59-year-old man with ashy dermatosis is presented; the classification and diagnosis of this disease is discussed. Ashy dermatosis presents two main clinical aspects: the ashy-color maculae, and the involvement mainly in darker-skinned patients often from Latin America and Asia. The blue-grey color can be explained by the Tyndall effect because of the melanin found in the dermis. Bluish dermal melanocytoses are also more common in these same racial and ethnic groups. Perhaps the particular size and distribution of melanosomes in these groups predisposes them to development of ashy dermatosis.

High-resolution synchrotron radiation computed tomography (SRCT) and small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) were performed on normal and dentinogenesis imperfecta type II (DI-II) teeth. Glare and mesopic vision were tested before and after cataract surgery in addition to the standard visual acuity measurement. Quantitative data on the amount of improvement in these functions are presented. Preoperatively, glare and mesopic vision were reduced to 20/200 or less in most patients. Postoperatively, a statistically significant improvement in the three visual functions measured was found in all five octaves of presurgical visual acuity.

Radiolucent implants offer theoretical advantages of increased ability to evaluate the fracture site for healing and recurrence and potentially less effect on radiation treatment, avoiding scatter. Their clinical utility and outcomes have yet to be proven in a well-designed randomized trial or large cohort study, although studies based on other indications have shown relative safety and they are approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for treatment of pathologic fractures. Further research is necessary to better understand when and how these implants should be implemented in practice.

BACKGROUND: The setup of lung shield (LS) in total body irradiation (TBI) with the computed radiography (CR) system is a time-consuming task and has not been quantitatively evaluated. The TBI mobile imager (TBI-MI) can solve this problem through real-time monitoring.
