Self-Perceptions and Behavior of Older People Living Alone.

It is currently acknowledged that older people prefer to live in their own home, even if they are lonely or disabled in some way. The factors that condition aging among older people members of the population living alone include the following: the existence or absence of a social network, gender, the home or place where they live, their capacity to function, and welfare and health resources. The main goal of this study was to explore the perceptions of older peoples over 75 years old about adaptation strategies and the social, gender, physical autonomy, and socio-health resource factors that d

[The role of the media in the development, course, and management of eating disorders].

Eating disorders are among the most common psychosomatic illnesses in Western societies. For some time now, the media have been blamed as one of the potential triggers of problematic eating behavior. Several studies have shown that the media convey an unrealistic ideal of beauty and that this can cause dissatisfaction with one's own body, especially among young recipients. However, two central aspects have not yet been thoroughly considered. First, there is a lack of research that focuses on people actually affected by an eating disorder and that considers the role of the media in the developm

Self-Esteem, Narcissism, and Aggression: Different Types of Self-Esteem Predict Different Types of Aggression.

The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between self-esteem, narcissism, and measures of proactive and reactive aggression in two large community samples of young adults from two countries (the United Kingdom and Malaysia). Self-esteem and narcissism were measured through the Multidimensional Self-Esteem Inventory and the Narcissistic Personality Inventory, whereas aggression was measured by the Reactive-Proactive Aggression Questionnaire in 501 young adults with approximately equal numbers of men and women. In both countries, low levels of self-esteem were associated with reacti

Because you're worth the risks: Acts of oppositional courage as symbolic messages of relational value to transgender employees.

Achieving greater social equity in organizations often depends on majority members taking risks to challenge the status quo on behalf of their colleagues with stigmatized identities. But, how do employees enact courageous behavior in this regard, and what are the social implications of these courageous acts on stigmatized group members who witness them at work? To begin examining these questions, we conducted 4 studies using qualitative and quantitative data collected from 428 transgender employees. Drawing on the core principles of sociometer theory, we argue that these acts of oppositional c

Neurocognitive correlates of self-esteem: From self-related attentional bias to involvement of the ventromedial prefrontal cortex.

Despite growing interest in underlying cognitive mechanisms of self-esteem, its neurocognitive correlates are not fully-understood. Attention bias to self-related stimuli is an example of self-referential processing (SRP) and its association with self-esteem is not well-studied. Moreover, previous studies showed that the medial prefrontal regions are involved in SRP which might suggest its involvement in self-esteem too. We investigated attentional bias to self-related stimuli and its association with the level of self-esteem in the first study (N = 30). In the second study (N = 15), we modula

[Para-sports for Muscular Dystrophy Patients].

Patients with muscular dystrophy repeatedly experience loss of motor function and the ability to perform activities of daily living throughout the progression of their disease. These experiences can seriously decrease their self-esteem. Although multidisciplinary care has improved the life expectancy of these patients greatly, it can be hard for them to engage in social activities. Para-sports can bring about a sense of independence in such patients. They can join para-sports as players, because para-sports are modified or originally designed to adapt to their functional abilities. Such experi

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder: A Pathology of Self-Confidence?

A striking change OCD patients repeatedly describe following treatment with deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the ventral anterior limb of internal capsule (vALIC) is an immediate increase in self-confidence. We show how the DBS-induced changes in self-confidence reported by our patients can be understood neurocognitively in terms of active inference.

Embedding Self-Regulation Instruction Within Fractions Intervention for Third Graders With Mathematics Difficulties.

The purpose of this study was to explore the efficacy of fractions intervention with and without an embedded self-regulation (SR) component for third-grade students at risk for mathematics disabilities. Fractions intervention focused on magnitude understanding and word problems. Embedded SR was designed to support a growth mindset (fostering belief that intellectual and academic abilities can be developed) along with SR processes in which students set goals, self-monitor, and use strategies to engage motivationally, metacognitively, and behaviorally through challenging tasks. Students (n = 69)

When It Is Not So Funny: Prevalence of Friendly Sexist Teasing and Consequences to Gender Self-Esteem.

This research investigates the phenomenon of "friendly" sexist teases (FSTs), which we define as playful intergroup teases that are based on the negative gender stereotypes that devalue one's gender group. We first employed a diary study to explore the prevalence of FSTs in college students' everyday life and found that this type of teasing tends to occur in social situations and often between close others. In a second study, we experimentally manipulated perceived closeness with the teaser. We predicted that individuals teased by someone with whom they shared a perceived closeness would inter

Autoimmunity: An in-sight narrative.

Autoimmune conditions can mirror dis-ease at many levels, each of which blurs the boundary between self and non-self. While medicine captures the inflammatory angle involving the immune system, this article presents perspectives on other players in this dis-ease-lifestyle, mental and emotional states and sociocultural settings-gathered from the author's own journey with autoimmunity.

Women's recovery from anorexia nervosa: a systematic review and meta-synthesis of qualitative research.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a complex and challenging condition and recovery can be a slow and difficult process. Predicting factors remain largely unknown. This paper aims to systematically review qualitative studies which have investigated female service users' experiences of recovering from AN and carry out a meta-synthesis of the themes they identified. Meta-ethnography was used to select and synthesize the studies. Articles published between 2002 and 2017 were searched in PsycInfo, EMBASE, CINAHL and Medline. Studies were included if they explored recovery from AN using a qualitative methodo

Identification of Nonconsensual Sexual Experiences and the Sexual Self-Schemas of Women: Implications for Sexual Functioning.

Many individuals who experience nonconsensual sexual experiences (NSEs) do not identify their experiences with common sexual violence labels (e.g., sexual assault, rape, or abuse), and cognitive mechanisms of identification have yet to be examined. Identification may involve the integration of the experience into sexual self-schemas, which would have implications for sexual well-being. Women were recruited through Amazon's Mechanical Turk (N = 818) to take part in an anonymous online study of sexual experiences. The current study assessed the relationship between textually derived sexual self-

Social cognition and self-other distinctions in neuropsychiatry: Insights from schizophrenia and Tourette syndrome.

Impairments in social cognition may reflect dysfunction of disorder specific or disorder general mechanisms. Although cross-disorder comparison may prove insightful, few studies have compared social cognition in different neuropsychiatric disorders. Parallel investigation of schizophrenia and Tourette syndrome (TS) is encouraged by similarities including the presence of problematic social behavior, echophenomena, emotional dysregulation and dopamine dysfunction. Focusing on tests of social cognition administered in both disorders, this review aims to summarize behavioral, neurophysiological an

The Psychology of Close Relationships: Fourteen Core Principles.

Relationship science is a theory-rich discipline, but there have been no attempts to articulate the broader themes or principles that cut across the theories themselves. We have sought to fill that void by reviewing the psychological literature on close relationships, particularly romantic relationships, to extract its core principles. This review reveals 14 principles, which collectively address four central questions: (a) What is a relationship? (b) How do relationships operate? (c) What tendencies do people bring to their relationships? (d) How does the context affect relationships? The 14

An Evaluation of a Community-Based Psycho-Educational Program for Users of Child Sexual Exploitation Material.

Online sexual offenders represent an increasingly large proportion of all sexual offenders. Many of these offenders receive noncustodial sentences, and there is a growing need for community-based interventions. The aim of this study was to evaluate a psycho-educational program for community dwelling users of child sexual exploitation material (CSEM). A total of 92 adult male participants completed self-report measures at pre and post. A subset of participants also completed measures after a follow-up period. Results suggested benefits across depression, anxiety, and stress; social competency,

Implicit and explicit self-esteem discrepancies in people with psychogenic nonepileptic seizures.

PURPOSE: Self-esteem (SE), or one's sense of competence and worth, is reduced in many mental and physical disorders. Low SE is associated with perceived stigma and disability and poor treatment outcomes. The present study examined implicit and explicit SE (automatic and deliberate views about the self) in people with epilepsy and people with psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNESs). Discrepancies between implicit SE and explicit SE have been found to correlate with psychological distress in disorders often associated with PNESs but are relatively unexplored in PNESs. We hypothesized that, com
