BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing threat to human and animal health, and the growth in AMR prevalence globally is thought to be partially driven by non-therapeutic antibiotic use in livestock production. However, livestock farms may depend on antibiotics as a prophylactic disease management tool, and reducing antibiotic use in isolation may harm farmers' economic security. In order to help farmers safely reduce their antibiotic use, we must first determine how necessary non-therapeutic antibiotic use is for disease management, and how other farm practices can guard agains

Livestock breeding is one of the main agricultural activities in Tanzania, recognized as one of the African countries with the greatest livestock resources. Cattle is the most widely bred animal species, especially with traditional farming methods such as pastoralism and agro-pastoralism. Slaughtering takes place mainly in rural slaughter slabs and municipal slaughterhouses, and according to local legislation it must be supervised by Official Veterinarians, who report any organs to be discarded and, after stamping the carcass, authorize its free consumption. Since the Ruvuma region lacks data

Anamnestic incidences of four patients have highlighted the potential risk ofexposure to rabies. The first patient was a 30-year-old woman who rescued a bat from the mouth of her dog; it bit her on the right wrist. In the Netherlands, bats may be infected with the Lyssa virus. The Preparedness and Response Unit (PRU) of the Centre for Infectious Disease Control (CIDC) advised human rabies immunoglobulin (HRIG) and a full vaccination programme. The second patient was a 37-year-old woman, who caught a 'sick' squirrel and was subsequently bitten on her left hand. The advice was not to use post ex

Pollination is one of the most essential economic services, and approximately 87.5% flowering plants depend on animals. Bees, particularly Apis mellifera, are the world’s most effective pollinators, responsible for insect-driven pollination. They support the pollination of various crops, including vegetables and fruits. However, widespread use of neonicotinoid insecticides (NNIs) has contributed to their decline by acting as agonists to acetylcholine receptors, causing neurotoxicity. NNIs bind to post-synaptic membranes, mimicking acetylcholine and leading to neural hyperexcitation and death.

The order Chiroptera is highly diverse and is the second richest among mammals. Approximately 181 species are known in Brazil, with varied feeding habits that make them essential for ecological functions such as seed dispersal and plant regeneration. Despite the importance of their ecosystem services, the anatomical and histological aspects of the digestive system of these animals are still little explored. The aim of this study was to describe the anatomical and histomorphological aspects of the intestines of A. lituratus. Six individuals were captured in peri-urban areas of Rio Branco, Acre.

Foodborne diseases can be prevented by implementing a food safety system that manages food chain risks from producer to end-user, from a One Health perspective. In 2017, the European Parliament and the European Council adopted Regulation No. 625 on official food controls and other official activities performed to ensure the application of food and feed laws and rules on animal health and welfare, plant health and plant protection products. Italy issued a national law, Legislative Decree No. 27/2021, to adapt and adhere to European standards. We aim to describe the adoption and implementation o

Immune dysregulation, polyendocrinopathy, enteropathy, X-linked (IPEX) syndrome is a rare primary immunodeficiency, typically associated with clinical features of intractable diarrhoea, type 1 diabetes mellitus and eczema. We present a case of IPEX syndrome referred to our regional facial palsy service for smile restoration surgery. The patient presented with dissatisfaction of facial appearance, including mask-like facies and no functional smile. Pre-operative electromyography confirmed normal temporalis muscle activation. Consequently, the patient was offered single-stage bilateral lengtheni

A 4-year-old female spayed Australian cattle dog was presented to the Emergency Service at the University of Missouri Veterinary Health Center Small Animal Hospital for generalized pain and lethargy. At presentation, the dog showed severe cervical spinal pain and thoracic limb deficits consistent with a multifocal neuroanatomic localization. Magnetic resonance imaging of the cervical spine revealed T2 and T1 postcontrast intense signal extending from the level of the medulla through C5 most marked in the caudal brainstem and cranial cervical spinal cord. The suspected diagnosis was severe meni

In Buenos Aires city (Argentina), the circulation of these agents has been detected mainly in vectors and animals, few human cases having been described. The aim of our study was to determine the seroprevalence of Rickettsia (spotted fever--SFG--and typhus--TG--groups) and Coxiella burnetii (Q fever agent) in residents of Buenos Aires city. The study involved 99 participants. Rickettsia IgG antibodies against SFG and TG were detected by IFA in 28.3% and 16.2% of serum samples, respectively. SFG titers were mostly 1/64 (53.6%) with a maximum of 1/512 (3.5%) whereas TG titers ranged between 1/64

Largely based on promising animal studies, continuous electronic fetal monitoring (EFM) was introduced into clinical practice in the early 1970s. After almost 20 years of experience, it is now apparent that the anticipated benefits of this technology have not materialized. Undesirable side effects of EFM include inappropriate operative intervention for some patients and increased liability for physicians and hospitals, resulting in an increase in the costs of obstetric services. After reviewing several research studies, The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists concluded that EFM

Brucellosis remains an important zoonotic disease in southern Saudi Arabia; however, community-level knowledge, risk-related practices, and information pathways in Najran City are insufficiently characterized. This study assessed brucellosis-related knowledge, attitudes, practices, and information pathways among adults in Najran City to inform locally relevant One Health interventions. In this cross-sectional survey, adults were recruited using stratified time-location (venue-based) sampling across community and exposure-relevant sites in Najran City. A total of 608 adults completed a structur

BACKGROUND: Village chicken production is central to rural livelihoods across sub-Saharan Africa. However, the poor biosecurity and hygiene observed in the chicken flocks, coupled with the limited access of farmers to veterinary services, provide favorable conditions for the persistence and transmission of zoonotic pathogens such as Salmonella spp. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of Salmonella in village chicken flocks; quantify fecal bacterial loads; and identify household – and flock-level risk factors associated with Salmonella spp. infection in the Boussouma commune in rural Bu

Rabies, a lethal zoonotic viral disease, continues to pose a significant public health threat worldwide. Caused by lyssaviruses, primarily transmitted through the bite of infected animals, rabies manifests as an acute encephalitis with a nearly universal fatality rate once clinical symptoms appear. The hallmark of rabies infection is its unique neurotropism, targeting the central nervous system and inducing characteristic neurological signs and symptoms. Early diagnosis and prompt administration of post-exposure prophylaxis remain crucial for preventing disease progression and mitigating the r

Repeat breeder (RB) cows are clinically healthy animals with regular oestrous cycles that do not become pregnant after three or more services. This syndrome has an incidence ranging between 10.1% and 24%. Repeat breeder syndrome (RBS) in dairy cows leads to economic losses to dairy farmers by increasing the calving interval and consequently reducing milk and calf production. RBS has a complex oetiopathogenesis as many factors are involved in its onset. The causes can be grouped into two categories: causes leading to fertilisation failure and factors leading to early embryonic death. Accurate i

A 6-year-old neutered male domestic short-haired cat was presented to the Comparative Ophthalmology service at Michigan State University with a 3-week history of decreased appetite and redness of the left eye. The left forelimb had been removed 15 months previously because of the presence of a subcutaneous fibrosarcoma. In the left globe, a large iridal mass was associated with increased intraocular pressure and retinal detachment. A smaller mass involving the right iris was also present. Imaging revealed a 2-cm mass in the left caudodorsal lung lobe, and abdominal ultrasound showed multifocal

In the unique environment of Australia's tropical north there are endemic diseases inherited from Gondwana, others introduced from the north and from Europe, and a wide range of particularly venomous animals. There is continuing disparity in morbidity and mortality between Aboriginal people and other Australians in tropical areas and elsewhere. This is being addressed by the National Aboriginal Health Strategy, which emphasises social, environmental and economic issues, as well as control and coordination of services by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
