Interpersonal psychotherapy of depressed HIV-positive outpatients.

In an open pilot study, 23 depressed adults infected with human immunodeficiency virus were treated using interpersonal therapy. Twenty subjects recovered from depression after a mean of 16 sessions. The authors discuss six aspects of interpersonal therapy that make it useful with depressed HIV-infected persons: psychoeducation about the sick role; a here-and-now framework; formulation of problems from an interpersonal perspective; exploration of options for changing dysfunctional behavior patterns; identification of focused interpersonal problem areas (grief, role transition, interpersonal di…

BM-MSCs mitigate lung injury in a rat model of decompression sickness.

Decompression sickness is a fatal disease worldwide. Therefore, to find a prophylactic modality for decompression sickness is urgently required. Bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells exhibit effectiveness in antioxidant, anti-inflammation, and decrease cell death; while its effects on decompression sickness remains unclear. This study aimed to further investigate the mechanisms of decompression sickness induced lung injury, as well as effects of bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells on decompression sickness induced lung injury and explore the role of oxidative stress, inflammation a

Anti-inflammatory Effect of Astaxanthin on the Sickness Behavior Induced by Diabetes Mellitus.

Chronic inflammation appears to play a critical role in sickness behavior caused by diabetes mellitus. Astaxanthin has been used in treating diabetes mellitus and diabetic complications because of its neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory actions. However, whether astaxanthin can improve sickness behavior induced by diabetes and its potential mechanisms are still unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of astaxanthin on diabetes-elicited abnormal behavior in mice and its corresponding mechanisms. An experimental diabetic model was induced by streptozotocin (150 mg/kg) and

Orexin-A and motion sickness: a systematic review of animal model studies.

BACKGROUND: Sensory input mismatches among the vestibular system, autonomic control, and visual perception cause motion sickness. Anticholinergics and antihistamines are commonly used but have limited efficacy and cause significant side effects. Orexin-A, a hypothalamic neuropeptide, has recently garnered attention for its potential role in controlling motion sickness. OBJECTIVE: To summarize current knowledge on the effects and mechanisms of orexin-A in reducing motion sickness, identify gaps, and propose future research directions. METHODS: Five qualified animal experiments were identified

Vertebrate sickness behaviors: Adaptive and integrated neuroendocrine immune responses.

Vertebrate sickness behaviors, which include lethargy, anorexia, and decreased libido, can facilitate defense against pathogens by conserving energy for use in other immune responses and by limiting parasites' access to nutrients. Such benefits come with considerable costs, however, as lethargy decreases the time available for other fitness-enhancing activities and dampened libido directly reduces reproductive prospects. While the degree of sickness behaviors expressed varies among individuals, populations, and species, the ecological and physiological factors driving this diversity remain unc

[Duties of physicians or other healthcare workers connected with diagnosis, treatment, dissemination of information, assessment and registration of TB patients].

Effective laws provide a series of duties to be performed by physicians and other medical personnel associated with TB. Every TB case and death resulting from TB as well as any case of undesirable result of BCG test requires notification and filling in of a special form. The physician has a duty to inform TB patients their legal guardians, close relatives or friends about the need to undergo sanitary and diagnostic procedure, treatment or vaccination, as well as on how to prevent disease from spreading. Persons failing to comply with the relevant numerous legal requirements in this respect are

What do general practice patients want when they present medically unexplained symptoms, and why do their doctors feel pressurized?

OBJECTIVE: We tested predictions that patients with medically unexplained symptoms (MUS) want more emotional support and explanation from their general practitioners (GPs) than do other patients, and that doctors find them more controlling because of this. DESIGN: Thirty-five doctors participated in a cross-sectional comparison of case-matched groups. Three hundred fifty-seven patients attending consecutively with MUS were matched for doctor and time of attendance with 357 attending with explained symptoms. Patients self-reported the extent to which they wanted somatic intervention, emotional

Poststroke depression: psychopharmacological considerations.

PSD is a common psychiatric complication of stroke. It is often underrecognized and untreated. Numerous studies show that untreated PSD impedes the rehabilitation and recovery process, jeopardizes quality of life, and increases mortality. Successful management of the PSD requires early recognition and initiation of appropriate treatment to facilitate an optimal level of functioning. As active members of the interdisciplinary treatment team, psychiatric consultative-liaison nurses play a pivotal role in facilitating positive treatment outcomes during both the acute and rehabilitation phases in

[Outpatient cardiological rehabilitation--acceptance and conditions related to choice of setting].

In view of the increasing demands for more co-operation and integration among health care providers and "uninterrupted" care delivery processes increasing attention is being paid to establishing the determinants of a more flexible form of rehabilitation setting. Interest is focused particularly on determining at what stages and under what conditions specific choices of rehabilitation setting are made. In 1838 patients admitted consecutively to a cardiological rehabilitation clinic, the study investigated how many patients opted for outpatient rehabilitation and what factors influenced the pati

[Familial body concepts and illness attributions in primary headache in childhood and adolescence].

Empirical evidence of the important role of the family in primary pediatric headache has grown significantly in the last few years. The connections between the process of dysfunction and family interaction are, however, still partly unclear. From a constructivistic point of view, a suitable approach is to focus on social-cognitive factors. In this study, we tested on the basis of exploratory results gained from family questionnaires (n = 39 families with a child or an adolescent suffering from tension-type headache and/or migraine) whether family body concepts and family headache attributions

Perceived health in a population based sample of victims of the 1956 polio epidemic in the Netherlands.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate perceived health and its relation to residual paresis from polio, late onset neuromuscular symptoms following poliomyelitis (LSP), and sex, in a population based sample of polio survivors. METHODS: 350 subjects traced from the notification records of the Dutch 1956 polio epidemic received a mailed questionnaire on residual polio paresis and new neuromuscular symptoms. Perceived health was measured using the Nottingham health profile. Respondents with new muscle weakness and new neuromuscular symptoms were considered as cases with LSP. RESULTS: Health problems were p

Respiratory function vs sleep-disordered breathing as predictors of QOL in ALS.

BACKGROUND: Most patients with ALS have evidence of respiratory muscle weakness at diagnosis, and death is usually due to respiratory failure. Sleep disruption, possibly due to apneas, hypopneas, orthopnea, or REM-related desaturation, is common. The relative impact of these factors on quality of life has not been established. METHODS: The authors recruited 23 subjects with probable or definite ALS. Quality of life was assessed using generic and specific instruments, and respiratory muscle strength by measurement of vital capacity, maximum static pressures, and sniff nasal inspiratory pressur

A pilot study of interpersonal psychotherapy by telephone with cancer patients and their partners.

A single-arm pilot study explored the feasibility of adapting in Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) by telephone to reduce psychological distress and to enhance coping during cancer treatment. Therapy focuses on role transitions, interpersonal conflicts, and grief precipitated by cancer. Breast cancer patients receiving high-dose chemotherapy received weekly sessions with a psychologist throughout chemotherapy and for 1 month afterwards. Patients could invite one 'partner' to receive individual telephone IPT. Psychosocial functioning was assessed using standardized measures at study entry, afte

Interactive patterns of social support and individual coping strategies in melanoma patients and their correlations with adjustment to illness.

Combined patterns of social support and coping style and correlations with adjustment to cancer were investigated in early-stage melanoma patients. The authors studied 358 consecutive patients attending regular follow-up who answered standardized instruments that assess social support, coping behavior, and tumor-related distress. Regression analyses identified high active and low depressive coping behavior as stronger predictors for perceived support than sociodemographic and clinical variables. Cluster analyses yielded four coping-support patterns. High social support, combined either with ac

A retrospective study of the learning history origins of anxiety sensitivity.

Anxiety sensitivity (AS; the fear of anxiety-related sensations) has been proposed as a risk factor for the development of panic disorder. The present study involved a conceptual replication of Ehlers' (1993, Behaviour Research and Therapy, 31, 269-278) study on childhood learning experiences and panic attacks, but also extended her work by investigating the relationship between early learning experiences and the development of AS, in a non-clinical sample. A sample of 551 university students participated in a retrospective assessment of their childhood and adolescent instrumental and vicariou

Psychological functioning in primary progressive versus secondary progressive multiple sclerosis.

Psychological functioning in two types of multiple sclerosis (MS) patients is assessed: primary progressive (PP) and secondary progressive (SP) patients. On the basis of differences in clinical course and underlying pathology we hypothesized that primary progressive patients and secondary progressive patients might have different psychological functioning. Seventy patients treated in an MS centre were examined cross-sectionally. Forty had an SP course of MS and 30 a PP course. The 33 male and 37 female patients had a mean age of 48.4 years (SD 11.2) and mean age of onset of MS of 30.7 years (S
