Comparison of Doppler sonography and plate thermography for detection of carotid artery stenosis.

Foils coated with specific cholesterol esters indicate differences in temperature by changes in color. When these foils are placed on the skin, the skin temperature measured is related to the perfusion provided by the vessels supplying this area of the skin. A group of 300 patients were examined simultaneously with plate thermography and directional Doppler sonography in order to detect obstruction or occlusions of the carotid artery. Abnormalities were found in 42 patients. In 31, the positive findings obtained by the 2 methods were in agreement. In 8 only plate thermography gave a positive r…

Thermoregulatory, metabolic, and cardiovascular response of rats to microwaves.

This study was undertaken to determine the effects of 2,450-MHz microwave irradiation on thermoregulation, metabolism, and cardiovascular function of rats. Young adult male animals (430 g) were exposed for 30 min to 2,450-MHz microwaves in a cavity at absorbed dose rates of 0, 4.5, 6.5, or 11.1 mW/G. For animals of the size used in this study, these dose rates represent absorption of energy at the rate of 27.7, 40.1, and 68.2 cal/min, respectively. For a period of 5 h following exposure, measurements were made of colonic temperature, skin temperature, oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide product…

Is warm temperature necessary to prevent urethral stricture in combined transurethral resection and vaporization of prostate?

OBJECTIVES: To compare the effect of warm and room temperature irrigation solution on the incidence of urethral stricture during combined transurethral resection and vaporization of the prostate (CTURVP). Urethral stricture after transurethral surgery of the prostate is a bothersome complication. Warm irrigation improves the blood flow and might decrease the incidence of urethral stricture compared with the use of room temperature irrigation, which decreases the blood flow in the urethral mucosa, resulting in ischemic injury. METHODS: The patients who underwent CTURVP were divided into those

Macro- and microcirculatory factors affecting foot temperature change during walking.

Change in skin temperature is a complex process affected by several factors. During walking, increased microcirculatory activity, such as muscle metabolism, could increase foot temperature. The ensuing macrocirculatory responses, such as increased leg blood flow (LBF), might also increase foot temperature. However, it is unclear whether there is a relationship between these physiological measures and foot temperature during walking. Here, we examined the relationships among macrocicrulation (e.g., LBF), microcirculation [e.g., tissue saturation index (TSI)] and the change in foot temperature d…

Skin permeation of oxides of nitrogen and sulfur from short-term exposure scenarios relevant to hazardous material incidents.

Permeation of oxides of nitrogen and sulfur gases through skin and the consequences of dermal exposure are still poorly understood. We measured the penetration profile of three common industrial gases through skin, for short-term exposures relevant to HAZMAT scenarios. Time variations of gas concentration, clothing effects, temperature and humidity on epidermal absorption and penetration were assessed. Fabric off-gassing profiles were also investigated. The results show oxides of nitrogen (NO and NO2) at airborne concentrations up to lethal inhalation levels (e.g. 3000 ppm) have little skin pe

Sciatic nerve section induces mechanical hyperalgesia in skin adjacent to the deafferented region in rats: lack of correlation with autotomy behavior.

We have studied the development of cutaneous hypersensitivity in the innervation area of the saphenous nerve and autotomy behavior in rats after unilateral sciatic nerve section. Hypersensitivity was assessed by stimulating the saphenous area with mechanical (von Frey hairs and analgesimeter), cold (immersion) or heat (immersion or radiant heat) stimuli 10 days after sciatic nerve section. We did not observe any hypersensitivity to thermal stimulation or weak mechanical stimulation produced by von Frey hairs. A significant decrease in withdrawal threshold to intense mechanical pressure produce

Pain threshold induced by local exposure to millimeter waves on human skin.

Exposure to millimeter waves potentially causes pain and tissue damage at the exposed body sites. However, the threshold temperature, especi … he perception thresholds followed the order of warmth, heat, tingling, and pain, with the threshold skin temperature for pain at 41.9°C. Notably, females exhibited significantly higher sensitivity to pain than males. These findings provide further evidence supporting the need for protection from millimeter-wave exposure.

Reflex heating of the skin and telethermography.

Thermography is a very instructive method of showing the interaction between direct changes in heat radiation of the surface of the skin and its relation to reflex processes. Short reflex arcs, such as the axon reflex, and long reflex arcs, such as the flush phenomenon provoked by visceral cutaneous reflexes, can be illustrated by thermography. Reflex changes in skin temperature by cooling the skin of patients with cold contact urticaria with the short-term development of large areas of warmed skin and also reflex changes in cholinergic urticaria after prior heating of such skin areas where th…

Cold and heat strain during cold-weather field training with nuclear, biological, and chemical protective clothing.

The objective of this study was to quantify the thermal strain of soldiers wearing nuclear, biological, and chemical protective clothing during short-term field training in cold conditions. Eleven male subjects performed marching exercises at moderate and heavy activity levels for 60 minutes. Rectal temperature (Tre), skin temperatures, and heart rate were monitored. Ambient temperature (Ta) varied from -33 to 0 degrees C. Tre was affected by changes in metabolism, rather than in Ta. Tre increased above 38 degrees during heavy exercise even at -33 degrees C. The mean skin temperature decreased…

A descriptive survey of operating theatre and intensive care unit temperature management of burn patients in the United Kingdom.

BACKGROUND: Patients with major burns lose the normal thermoregulatory function of their skin. They exhibit profound changes in metabolism which aim to compensate for the heat loss associated with water loss through burnt skin. Although these changes in physiology are well documented, the optimal methods for temperature management in both the Operating Theatre and Intensive Care Unit are less clear. METHODS: We distributed a survey consisting of 19 questions to all burn units and centres in the United Kingdom with the aim of ascertaining perception of both hypo and hyperthermia, as well as me
