By the method of cyclic voltammetry with carbon fibrous electrodes the signal of 0.1 V was recorded from the dorsal hippocampus of male cats during natural sleep. Systemic injection of 50 mg of L-DOPA and 2.5 mg of isadrin did not influence the 0.1 V signal but the pyrroxan in a dose of 15 mg caused an increase of the signal amplitude. Parallel record of the EEG, myogram, oculogram and voltammogram showed that the 0.1 V signal, reflecting the level of alpha-adrenoreceptor norepinephrine content in the hippocampus increased in the first and last 1-2 minutes of the paradoxical sleep phase and wa

The role of arousals in sleep is gaining interest among both basic researchers and clinicians. In the last 20 years increasing evidence shows that arousals are deeply involved in the pathophysiology of sleep disorders. The nature of arousals in sleep is still a matter of debate. According to the conceptual framework of the American Sleep Disorders Association criteria, arousals are a marker of sleep disruption representing a detrimental and harmful feature for sleep. In contrast, our view indicates arousals as elements weaved into the texture of sleep taking part in the regulation of the sleep

BACKGROUND: Sleep phenotypes differ in progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). The human intermediate nucleus (IntN), a putative ventrolateral preoptic analog, promotes non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep, but its disease-specific vulnerability is unclear.
METHODS: Post mortem hypothalami (n = 30; baseline [Braak stage I-II] n = 6; PSP n = 9; Braak III-IV n = 4; Braak V-VI n = 11) underwent marker-guided IntN delineation, galanin/phospho-tau (T231) immunohistochemistry, and stereology.
RESULTS: Advanced PSP showed profound IntN degeneration (84% neuron reduction vs

In this study, we investigated the feasibility of applying manual muscle testing (MMT) for bedding selection and examined the bedding effect on sleep. Four lay testers with limited training in MMT performed muscle tests for the selection of the bedding systems from five different mattresses and eight different pillows for 14 participants with mild sleep-related respiratory disturbances. For each participant individually, two bedding systems-one inducing stronger muscle forces and the other inducing weaker forces-were selected. The tester-participant pairs showed 85% and 100% agreement, respect

The purpose of the present study was to determine the effects of restricting food and water intake to the light period on sleep and brain temperature (Tbr). Sprague-Dawley male rats were anesthetized and provided with electrodes and thermistors for electroencephalographic (EEG) and Tbr recordings. Baseline recordings were performed after a 3-week recovery period. After baseline recordings, access to food and water was restricted (FWR) to the light period for 29 days. During FWR, the diurnal distribution of rapid-eye-movement sleep (REMS) and Tbr were reversed, while the distribution of non-REM

Previous studies have highlighted the prevalence of disordered sleep in smokers, with subjective sleep complaints and alterations of sleep architecture, including a reduction in slow-wave sleep (SWS). These findings raise questions regarding the impact of smoking cessation and withdrawal on sleep. This review aims to assess the impact of smoking cessation on sleep by taking into account objective and subjective methods of assessment. The selected articles compared both participants' sleep before and after smoking cessation, and the sleep characteristics of patients who had relapsed compared to

Since the magnitude of the first-night effect has been shown to be a function of medical conditions and of settings in which polysomnographies are performed, it is essential to evaluate the habituation phenomenon in each case in order to determine the optimal recording methodology. A first-night effect was evidenced in certain cases of chronic fatigue syndrome, but not in others. To clarify this issue, a large group of patients with chronic fatigue syndrome who had no primary sleep disorders were selected and recorded for two consecutive nights in a hospital sleep unit. Several parameters, fre

BACKGROUND: Childhood obesity is a growing health challenge. Recent studies show that children with late bedtime and late awakening are more obese independent of total sleep time. In adolescents and adults, a delayed sleep phase has been associated with higher caloric intake. Furthermore, an adult study showed a positive correlation between REM sleep and energy balance. This relationship has not been demonstrated in children. However, it may be important as a delayed sleep phase would increase the proportion of REM sleep.
OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the relationship between hunger sco

INTRODUCTION: It is a well-known fact that epileptic seizures disrupt sleep, yet little information is available about sleep disorders according to the type of epileptic seizures.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sleep architecture of rats was evaluated in polysomnography recordings 36 hours after inducing partial and generalised epileptic seizures in them. The epileptic seizures were induced by applying 50-100 IU of sodium G penicillin in the amygdala of the temporal lobe.
RESULTS: Partial and generalised seizures triggered an increase in the latency of slow wave sleep (SWS) and rapid eye movemen

Caffeine is commonly used to combat high sleep pressure on a daily basis. However, interference with sleep-wake regulation could disturb neural homeostasis and insufficient sleep could lead to alterations in human gray matter. Hence, in this double-blind, randomized, cross-over study, we examined the impact of 10-day caffeine (3 × 150 mg/day) on human gray matter volumes (GMVs) and cerebral blood flow (CBF) by fMRI MP-RAGE and arterial spin-labeling sequences in 20 habitual caffeine consumers, compared with 10-day placebo (3 × 150 mg/day). Sleep pressure was quantified by electroencephalograph

STUDY OBJECTIVES: The primary objective of this study was to determine whether zaleplon (10 mg) effectively promoted sleep during the daytime in well-rested individuals when compared to placebo. A secondary objective was to see if, while not expected, the use of zaleplon impacted the performance of well-rested individuals upon awakening.
DESIGN: Repeated measures with 2 within-subject factors: drug (placebo/zaleplon) and trial (hourly testing during waking hours). Polysomnographic variables were recorded during a 3.5-hour nap following drug administration. Performance measures and subjective

In the last 30 years, it has been convincingly demonstrated that sleep in major depression is characterized by disturbances of sleep continuity, a reduction of slow wave sleep, a disinhibition of REM sleep including a shortening of REM latency (i.e. the time between sleep onset and the occurrence of the first REM period) and an increase in REM density. Furthermore, manipulations of the sleep-wake cycle like total or partial sleep deprivation or phase advance of the sleep period have been proven to be effective therapeutic strategies for patients with unipolar depression. Light sleep, including Stages N1 and N2, constitutes more than half of total human sleep duration. It serves essential functions in transitioning from wakefulness to deep sleep and in memory processing. Previous studies have identified four consistent electroencephalogram (EEG) microstates during wakefulness and sleep. Simultaneous EEG and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have shown that EEG microstates are associated with specific brain functional networks during wakefulness and slow wave sleep. However, the relationship between microstates and brain networks during light

STUDY OBJECTIVES: A considerable amount of experimental evidence suggests that sleep plays a critical role in learning/memory processes. In addition to paradoxical sleep, slow wave sleep is also reported to be involved in the consolidation process of memories. Additionally, sleep deprivation can induce other behavioral modifications, such as emotionality and alternations in locomotor activity in rodents. These sleep deprivation-induced alterations in the behavioral state of animals could produce state-dependent learning and contribute, at least in part, to the amnestic effects of sleep depriva

There is evidence that GABA plays a major role in sleep regulation. GABA(A) receptor agonists and different compounds interacting with the GABA(A) receptor complex, such as barbiturates and benzodiazepines, can interfere with the sleep/wake cycle. On the other hand, there is very little information about the possible role of GABA(B) receptors in sleep modulation. The nucleus basalis of Meynert (NBM), a cholinergic area in the basal forebrain, plays a pivotal role in the modulation of sleep and wakefulness, and both GABA(A) and GABA(B) receptors have been described within the NBM. This study us

Familial fatal insomnia (FFI)--a hereditary prion disease caused by a mutation at codon 178 of the prion-protein (PrP) gene (PRNP) that leads to a D178N substitution in the protein--and its sporadic form, sporadic fatal insomnia (SFI), have similar disease phenotypes. Both disorders have clinical features of disrupted sleep (loss of sleep spindles and slow-wave sleep and enacted dreams during rapid-eye-movement sleep), autonomic hyperactivation, and motor abnormalities (myoclonus, ataxia, dysarthria, dysphagia, and pyramidal signs). PET shows pronounced thalamic and limbic hypometabolism that

A model-based automatic K-complex (Kc) detector was applied to all-night single-channel sleep electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings from normal and dysthymic patients. The performance of the detector was analyzed in the two groups, and the differences obtained were discussed. The results showed that the detection rate of Kc in the normal group was around 92% through all stages of non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep, but with high numbers of "false" positives in stage 4 NREM, which reached 57%. In the dysthymic patients "true" detection included 85% of the Kc, but the percentage of "false" p

Sleep-wakefulness state was found to be a crucial determinant of respiratory pattern in chronic cats with bilateral lesions of the rostral pontine pneumotaxic complex (PC). Lesions resulted in increased TE, TI, and VT in all sleep and waking states. Several state-specific respiratory effects were also observed: (1) comparatively eupneic breathing during alert wakefulness (WI); (2) greatly increased TE in slow wave sleep (SWS); (3) decreased TE during rapid eye movement sleep (REM), relative to SWS; (4) increased tendency for prolonged TI (brief apneusis) during REM. Bilateral vagotomy at 2-5 w

AIMS: Objective sleep parameters in patients with HF and their comorbidity with sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) are not fully understood. We aimed to investigate the polysomnography-measured sleep characteristics in HF patients using a systematic review and meta-analysis.
METHODS: PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases were searched for studies on PSG in HF patients. Meta-analyses were conducted to compare PSG parameters between HF patients and Non-HF, HF patients with and without SDB, HF patients with different types of SDB, and HF patients before and after SDB treatments.

Sleep problems are prevalent in autism spectrum disorder (ASD), can be observed before diagnosis, and are associated with increased restricted and repetitive behaviors. Therefore, sleep abnormalities may be a core feature of the disorder, but the developmental trajectory remains unknown. Animal models provide a unique opportunity to understand sleep ontogenesis in ASD. Previously we showed that adult mice with a truncation in the high-confidence ASD gene Shank3 (Shank3∆C ) recapitulate the clinical sleep phenotype. In this study we used longitudinal electro-encephalographic (EEG) recordings to
