Examining the Potential Link Between Forkhead Box P1 and Severity and Social Impairment in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Background: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition characterized by impaired social skills and communication. Forkhead box protein P1 (FOXP1) is involved in the development of the brain and the pathogenesis of ASD. However, the function of FOXP1 within the brain remains unclear. The aim of this case-control study was to evaluate whether FOXP1 could be used as a diagnostic biomarker for ASD. Method: Blood plasma was collected from children with ASD and age-matched controls. The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to determine the FOXP1 plasma lev

Communication, social-emotional development and parenting stress in Cornelia-de-Lange syndrome.

Cornelia-de-Lange syndrome is a dysmorphogenic disorder characterized by multiple congenital abnormalities, and in most cases, severe cognitive limitations. Parents of 27 children with Cornelia-de-Lange syndrome completed psychological questionnaires concerning communicative and social-emotional behaviours, and reported on their parenting stress. Only four children were able to use speech, but most of the older children expressed needs through non-verbal means. Feeding problems, over-activity, irritability and stereotyped behaviours were characteristic for the majority of the group. Self-injur

[Autism spectrum disorder and specific language disorder. Are two different entities or a continuum of neuropsychological manifestations?].

Follow-up of children with delayed language development underscores the fact that, in several cases, language difficulties coexist with other symptoms such as social behavior changes. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and language specific disorder (LSD) are developmental disorders that are defined differently, but have some common language and social behavior characteristics which impose diagnostic difficulties. For this reason it is believed that they may share not only symptomatic but also ethiological aspects. With that in mind, we performed a literature search of works that discussed and, wi

Implications of the endocannabinoid system and the therapeutic action of cannabinoids in autism spectrum disorder: A literature review.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder, onset in early childhood and associated with cognitive, social, behavioral, and sensory impairments. The pathophysiology is still unclear, and it is believed that genetic and environmental factors are fully capable of influencing ASD, especially cell signaling and microglial functions. Furthermore, the endocannabinoid system (ECS) participates in the modulation of various brain processes and is also involved in the pathophysiological mechanisms of this condition. Due to the health and quality of life impacts of autism for the pat

Comorbidity of autistic spectrum disorders in children with Down syndrome.

The aim of the study was to identify the comorbidity of autistic spectrum disorders in a population of children with Down syndrome (DS). All children with DS within a defined population of South Birmingham were identified. The Asperger Syndrome Screening Questionnaire and the Child Autism Rating Scale were completed and diagnosis made according to ICD-10 criteria following interview and observation. Thirty-three of 58 identified children completed the measures, four of whom received a diagnosis of an autistic spectrum disorder. This is equivalent to a minimum comorbid rate of 7%. The questionn

Overall prognosis of preschool autism spectrum disorder diagnoses.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by social communication difficulties, restricted interests and repetitive behaviours. The clinical pathway for children with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder is varied, and current research suggests some children may not continue to meet diagnostic criteria over time. OBJECTIVES: The primary objective of this review was to synthesise the available evidence on the proportion of preschool children who have a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder at baseline (diagnosed before six years of age) who continue

Pharmacologic treatment of behavioral symptoms associated with autism and other pervasive developmental disorders.

Pervasive developmental disorders (PDDs), including autistic disorder (autism), Asperger's disorder, and pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (PDD NOS), are neurodevelopmental disorders of childhood onset. These disorders persist throughout the lifespan of affected individuals and are characterized by impaired social behavior and communication, along with repetitive, stereotypic behaviors. Early diagnosis and subsequent behavioral therapy have been shown to improve outcomes for these individuals. Risperidone and aripiprazole have been approved by the United States Food and

Examining the efficacy of dance movement and music mixed treatment on social communication impairment in children with autism - Based on family parent-child situation.

Despite impairments in social communication in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), existing studies only examine the effects of either MT or DMT interventions. In the family setting, few studies have investigated interventions for social communication impairments in children with ASD. This study designed and tested a mixed intervention program of both MT and DMT through a 3-month intervention and training for children with ASD in the family setting including parent and child. A pre-test and post-test were conducted in the experimental and control groups, and the childhood autism rati

Insecure Attachment to Parents and PTSD among Adolescents: The Roles of Parent-Child Communication, Perceived Parental Depression, and Intrusive Rumination.

Based on attachment theory and a social-cognitive model of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), this study examined the roles of parent-child communication, perceived parental depression, and intrusive rumination in the association between insecure attachment to parents and PTSD among adolescents following the Jiuzhaigou earthquake. In this study, 620 adolescents were recruited to complete self-report questionnaires. The results showed that the direct association between anxious attachment and PTSD was significant, but that between avoidant attachment and PTSD was non-significant. In addition

Recent Progress in Rett Syndrome and MeCP2 Dysfunction: Assessment of Potential Treatment Options.

Synaptic communication is highly regulated process of contact between cells allowing information to be stored and modified. Synaptic formation and maturation is the result of interactions between intrinsic genetic/molecular factors and the external environment to establish the communication in the brain. One disorder associated with faulty synapse communication is Rett Syndrome (RTT). RTT is the leading form of severe MR in females, affecting approximately 1:10,000 females worldwide, without predisposition to any particular racial or ethnic group. Mutations in MECP2, the gene encoding methyl-C

Effects of a combined physical activity and educational drama intervention on core symptoms and physical fitness in children with ASD.

This pilot study evaluated the effects of a 12-week combined physical activity and educational drama intervention on core symptoms and physical fitness in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Twenty children were randomly assigned to an experimental group (n = 10), receiving the combined intervention, or a control group (n = 10), receiving conventional physical activity. Outcomes were assessed using the Repetitive Behavior Scale-Revised (RBS-R), Social Responsiveness Scale-2 (SRS-2), and a physical fitness test battery. The results indicated that both interventions significantly improved re

Lost in the literature, but not the caseload: working with atypical disfluency from theory to practice.

Atypical disfluency is a frustrating but little addressed clinical problem. The purpose of this article and case study was to summarize what is known about atypical fluency profiles and to describe the presenting behaviors and successful treatment of an unusual fluency profile (numerous word-final syllable repetitions) in a school-aged child. To this end, we describe the speech fluency and associated communication characteristics of a young boy diagnosed with Asperger disorder who was between 7;2 and 8;0 when seen for evaluation and treatment. We describe a therapy protocol that was successful

Worster-Drought syndrome: poorly recognized despite severe and persistent difficulties with feeding and speech.

AIM: Worster-Drought syndrome (WDS), or congenital suprabulbar paresis, is a permanent movement disorder of the bulbar muscles causing persistent difficulties with swallowing, feeding, speech, and saliva control owing to a non-progressive disturbance in early brain development. As such, it falls within the cerebral palsies. The aim of this study was to describe the physical and neuropsychological profiles of children with WDS. METHOD: Forty-two children with WDS (26 males, 16 females; mean age 7y 10mo, SD 3y 1mo; range 2y 6mo to 16y 5mo) were studied prospectively using a standard protocol.

Altered Connectivity During a False-Belief Task in Adults With Autism Spectrum Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Deficits in social communication are one of the main features of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Adults with ASD show atypical brain activity during false-belief understanding, an aspect of social communication involving the ability to infer that an individual can have an incorrect belief about a situation. Our study is the first to investigate whether adults with ASD exhibit differences in frequency-specific functional connectivity patterns during false-belief reasoning. METHODS: We used magnetoencephalography to contrast functional connectivity underlying false-belief understand
