[Acute diarrhea: does mother's knowledge of the disease reduce admission of children under two years of age?].

OBJECTIVES: To analyze the relationship of mother's knowledge about signs of dehydration, causes and management of acute diarrhea with admission of children under two years of age with the disease. METHODS: A nested cross-sectional and case-control study was carried out with children who were admitted at the "Instituto Materno Infantil de Pernambuco" with acute diarrhea: and control children admitted with other diseases. Variables were: patient admission having or not acute diarrhea (dependent); social-economic condition, nutritional state; duration of breastfeeding; mother's knowledge about

Validation of the Portuguese version of the Social Adjustment Scale on Brazilian samples.

BACKGROUND: Social dysfunction is reported in several psychiatric diseases and its evaluation is becoming an important measure of treatment outcome. The aim of this study was to obtain normative data, to test the validity and the ability of the Portuguese version of the Self-Report Social Adjustment Scale (SAS-SR) to detect different clinical conditions. METHODS: The Portuguese version of the SAS-SR was applied to a carefully selected non-psychiatric sample, and to depressed, panic, bulimic and cocaine-dependent patients. Depressed and panic patients were evaluated in two different clinical c

Cerebellum and Emotion in Social Behavior.

Accumulating evidence suggests that the cerebellum plays a crucial role not only in the motor and cognitive domains but also in emotions and social behavior. In the present chapter, after a general introduction on the significance of the emotional components of social behavior, we describe recent efforts to understand the contributions of the cerebellum in social cognition focusing on the emotional and affective aspects. Specifically, starting from the description of the cerebello-cortical networks subtending the social-affective domains, we illustrate the most recent findings on the social ce

Processing of task-irrelevant natural scenes in social anxiety.

In this study, by manipulating perceptual load, we investigated whether socially anxious people process task-irrelevant, non-emotional, natural scenes. When attention was directed to letters and perceptual load was low, task-irrelevant natural scenes were processed, as evidenced by repetition priming effects, in both high and low socially anxious people. In the high perceptual load condition, repetition-priming effects decreased in participants with low social anxiety, but not in those with high social anxiety. The results were the same when attention was directed to pictures of animals: even

Social anxiety is associated with impaired memory for imagined social events with positive outcomes.

Cognitive models of social anxiety disorder suggest that memory biases for negative social information contribute to symptoms of social anxiety (SA). However, it remains unclear whether memory biases in SA are related to social information, specifically, and if so, whether the valence of such information would moderate memory performance. In the present study, 197 community participants were randomised to imagine themselves as the central character in either 10 social or 10 non-social scenarios. In both conditions, half of the scenarios ended with objectively positive outcomes and half ended w

Finding a face in the crowd: testing the anger superiority effect in Asperger Syndrome.

Social threat captures attention and is processed rapidly and efficiently, with many lines of research showing involvement of the amygdala. Visual search paradigms looking at social threat have shown angry faces 'pop-out' in a crowd, compared to happy faces. Autism and Asperger Syndrome (AS) are neurodevelopmental conditions characterised by social deficits, abnormal face processing, and amygdala dysfunction. We tested adults with high-functioning autism (HFA) and AS using a facial visual search paradigm with schematic neutral and emotional faces. We found, contrary to predictions, that people

Factors shaping social participation among community-dwelling older adults in China: a mixed-methods study from the perspectives of older adults and community workers.

OBJECTIVES: Guided by the Social ecological model (SEM), this study aimed to examine multilevel influences on social participation among community-dwelling older adults from the perspectives of older adults and community workers. METHODS: A convergent parallel mixed-methods design was used. The quantitative component included 641 community-dwelling older adults from 5 communities in Beijing, China. The qualitative component involved semi-structured interviews with 18 older adults and 14 community workers. Findings were integrated through an SEM-guided joint display and triangulation protocol.

Social determinants of chronic kidney disease: from association to clinical and population action.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To synthesize recent evidence on how social determinants -socioeconomic conditions, health system, physical environment, psychosocial factors, life course, structural forces, migration, gender, and population vulnerability - shape the risk, progression, and outcomes of chronic kidney disease (CKD), and to identify clinical and health policy implications. RECENT FINDINGS: The evidence confirms a consistent and cumulative social gradient: simultaneous exposure to low income, lower education, unemployment, housing insecurity, and barriers to healthcare access is associated wit

Social isolation disrupts autonomic regulation of the heart and influences negative affective behaviors.

BACKGROUND: There is a documented association between affective disorders (e.g., depression and anxiety) and cardiovascular disease in humans. Chronic social stressors may play a mechanistic role in the development of behavioral and cardiac dysregulation. The current study investigated behavioral, cardiac, and autonomic responses to a chronic social stressor in prairie voles, a rodent species that displays social behaviors similar to humans. METHODS: Female prairie voles were exposed to 4 weeks of social isolation (n = 8) or pairing (control conditions; n = 7). Electrocardiographic parameters

Social Comparison Influences the Spreads of Positive and Negative Information About Opponents and Corresponding ERP Responses.

Behavioural studies have shown that social comparison between oneself and opponents influences certain prosocial behaviours such as helping and cooperation behaviours towards opponents. However, it is uncertain whether social comparison affects other prosocial behaviours. More importantly, no studies have directly investigated whether social comparison affects antisocial behaviours towards opponents or neural mechanisms underlying both prosocial and antisocial behaviours. The present study addresses these issues by investigating the effects of social comparison on spreading positive and negati

Different early-life adversity paradigms have disparate effects on maternal care, neuronal activation, and social behavior in developing mice.

In humans, early-life adversity (ELA) predisposes individuals to neuropsychiatric conditions, with different types of adverse experiences linked more strongly to certain maladaptive outcomes. Maternal separation with early weaning (MSEW) and limited bedding and nesting (LBN) are rodent models that expose litters to very different postnatal manipulations, but the effect of these paradigms on offspring through differences in maternal care and neuronal activation remains incompletely explored. To address this gap, we directly compared behavior of dams in MSEW and LBN conditions to control conditi

Orofacial pain/headache interlaced to insomnia, sleep apnea and periodic limb movement during sleep/restless leg syndrome: a critical and comprehensive review with insights into social determinants.

This critical review explores the intricate interaction between orofacial pain and headache disorders and three prevalent sleep disorders: insomnia, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and periodic limb movements (PLMs) during sleep, while integrating the role of social determinants of health. Orofacial pain conditions, including temporomandibular disorders (TMD), headache, and burning mouth syndrome, frequently co-occur with sleep disturbances, creating a bidirectional cycle where poor sleep exacerbates pain and vice versa. The mechanisms underlying this relationship involve disrupted restorative s

The importance of family and community support for the health of HIV-affected populations in Southern Africa: what do we know and where to from here?

PURPOSE: Informal family and community support deriving from social relations can play an important role in protecting mental and physical health in resource-scarce contexts and may help facilitate health service access and uptake. Yet, to date, there has been surprisingly little empirical research investigating the role of social support as a resource for health in HIV-affected Southern African communities, despite the known importance of social connectedness, high rates of physical and mental health conditions, and existing 'treatment gaps'. METHODS: This paper brings together and discusses

Feeling excluded no matter what? Bias in the processing of social participation in borderline personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: Patients with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) feel ostracized even when they are included. This might be due to a biased processing of social participation in BPD. We examined whether patients with BPD also process social overinclusion in a biased manner, i.e., whether they feel ostracized even when the degree of social participation is increased. METHODS: An EEG-compatible version of Cyberball was used to investigate the effects of inclusion and overinclusion (33% vs. 45% ball receipt) on perceived ostracism, need threat and P3 amplitude, an EEG indicator for expectancy vio

The Relationship between Social Reward Behavior and Mesolimbic Dopamine Release.

Deficits in social behavior, such as reduced motivation and social avoidance, are key symptoms in several psychiatric disorders. Distinct modes of reward, such as drug and social, may rely on different dopamine release patterns in the mesolimbic pathway. We investigated the relationship between social reward behaviors and dopamine release elicited by phasic and tonic stimulation patterns in C57BL/6J mice. Social conditioned place preference was used to assess motivation for social interaction, and in vivo fixed potential amperometry was used to measure nucleus accumbens dopamine release before

Conditional reasoning difficulties in polysubstance-dependent patients.

Polysubstance dependence has been associated with many neurocognitive impairments. The present study explored one of these deficits, namely conditional reasoning, using the Wason selection task. In healthy individuals, social contract and precautionary content improve conditional reasoning performance compared with descriptive or abstract content. Twenty-two recently detoxified polysubstance-dependent patients were compared with 22 controls matched for sex, age, and education level on their performance on the Wason selection task across problems involving social contract, precautionary, and de

Accelerated aging: A marker for social factors resulting in cardiovascular events?

BACKGROUND: Medicine and public health are shifting away from a purely "personal responsibility" model of cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevention towards a societal view targeting social and environmental conditions and how these result in disease. Given the strong association between social conditions and CVD outcomes, we hypothesize that accelerated aging, measuring earlier health decline associated with chronological aging through a combination of biomarkers, may be a marker for the association between social conditions and CVD. METHODS: We used data from the Coronary Artery Risk Developme…

Obsessive-compulsive disorder and depression in university students: serial mediation of (intrusive and deliberate) rumination and social anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Early non-clinical obsessive-compulsive symptoms often disrupt young people’s social life in different ways and make the onset of clinical conditions more likely. Evidence shows frequent comorbidity between obsessive-compulsive symptoms and depression, suggesting that the former can start before depressive symptoms appear. However, the mechanisms that make this association more likely are unclear. This cross-sectional study examines whether (intrusive and deliberate) rumination and social anxiety play a serial mediating role between subclinical conditions in university students. ME

Kindergarteners' self-reported social inhibition and observed social reticence: moderation by adult-reported social inhibition and social anxiety disorder symptoms.

Prevention of later anxiety problems would best be accomplished by identifying at-risk children early in development. For example, children who develop Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) may show social withdrawal in the form of social inhibition (i.e., shyness with unfamiliar adults and peers) at school entry. Although the use of children's perceptions of their own social inhibition would provide insight into early risk, the utility of young children's self-reports remains unclear. The current study examined whether children deemed more extreme on social inhibition or social anxiety by adult repor

Family polyvictimization in households with parental health conditions: a cross-sectional study of disparities and risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Families with parents with health conditions often experience socioeconomic hardship, caregiving strain, and elevated exposure to family violence. However, differences in family polyvictimization (FPV) between these families and those without health conditions remain underexplored. This study examined disparities in FPV exposure and associated family-level risk factors. METHODS: A cross-sectional household survey was conducted with 1,400 Hong Kong families with children under 18. Measures included FPV (FPV Screen), social support (MSPSS), family hierarchy (PRP), health (SF-12v2, P
