Cost-utility analysis of Social Stories™ for children with autism spectrum disorder in mainstream primary schools: results from a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: One in 57 children are diagnosed with autism in the UK, and the estimated cost for supporting these children in education is substantial. Social Stories™ is a promising and widely used intervention for supporting children with autism in schools and families. It is believed that Social Stories™ can provide meaningful social information to children that can improve social understanding and may reduce anxiety. However, no economic evaluation of Social Stories has been conducted. AIMS: To assess the cost-effectiveness of Social Stories through Autism Spectrum Social Stories in Schools

Peripersonal space and interpersonal distance as windows onto multisensory body representation in adolescents with overgrowth syndromes.

INTRODUCTION: Peripersonal space (PPS) and interpersonal distance (IPD) reflect related but dissociable representations of the space around the body, both relevant to multisensory and social development. However, whether physical overgrowth is associated with an altered regulation of body-related space remains unknown, despite growing evidence of psychosocial difficulties in individuals with overgrowth syndromes. METHODS: This study aimed to characterize PPS and IPD in adolescents with overgrowth syndromes, specifically Beckwith-Wiedemann spectrum, Sotos syndrome, and Malan syndrome, and to t

Social anxiety disorder above and below the diagnostic threshold: prevalence, comorbidity and impairment in the general population.

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of data systematically describing subthreshold expressions of social anxiety disorder (SAD) with regard to prevalence, comorbidity, and impairment. METHODS: This analysis was based on data from the German Health Survey (GHS) and its Mental Health Supplement (GHS-MHS). Social anxiety disorder and its syndromes as well as other mental disorders were assessed with a standardized diagnostic interview (M-CIDI) in 4,174 adults. RESULTS: The 12-month prevalence rate for threshold SAD was 2.0%, subthreshold and symptomatic social anxiety (one DSM-IV criterion missing/two

Nursing postvention for spousal survivors of suicide.

There is a scarcity of information available with respect to postbereavement outcomes for survivors of the suicide of a loved one. Few studies have focused on postvention therapies for the bereaved, particularly the bereaved survivors of suicide. The major aim of this study as to compare the effects of two theoretically derived nursing postventions, Bereavement Group Postvention (BGP) and Social Group Postvention (SGP), among the widowed whose spouses died of suicide. The findings suggest that both groups experienced an overall reduction in depression and distress. Although participants in the

Understanding the social determinants of Aedes-borne diseases in Iran: A qualitative exploration of challenges and policy solutions.

BACKGROUND: Aedes-borne diseases pose escalating public health challenges globally, influenced not only by ecological and biological factors but critically by social determinants of health (SDH). In Iran, emerging local transmission of dengue highlights these diseases as effective proxies to examine the impact of social and environmental factors on health equity. However, evidence on context-specific drivers and effective responses remains scarce. This study aimed to identify key SDH and propose prioritized interventions to inform evidence-based policymaking. METHODS: This mixed-method study

[Neurobiology and pharmacotherapy of social phobia].

Social phobia (also known as social anxiety disorder) is still not clearly understood. It was not established as an authentic psychiatric entity until the diagnostic nomenclature of the American Psychiatric Association DSM III in 1980. In recent years, increasing attention among researchers has contributed to provide important information about the genetic, familial and temperamental bases of social phobia and its neurochemical, neuroendocrinological and neuroanatomical substrates, which remain to be further investigated. Up to date, there have been several findings about the possible influenc

Social support during pregnancy and the risk of postpartum depression in Polish women: A prospective study.

Social support has been proposed as an important determinant of women's physical and emotional well-being during pregnancy and after childbirth. Our study aimed to examine the association between the risk of postpartum depression (PPD) and perceived social support during pregnancy. A web-based prospective study survey was conducted among Polish women. The level of social support was measured with the Berlin Social Support Scales during pregnancy. Four weeks after the birth the risk of PPD was assessed using the Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale. Data from 932 mothers aged 19-43 (mean 30.95

Admixture analysis of the diagnostic subtypes of social anxiety disorder: implications for the DSM-V.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Much controversy exists regarding diagnostic subtypes of social anxiety disorder (SAD). The present study used admixture analysis to examine whether individuals with generalized and nongeneralized SAD belong to the same or different populations of origin. This can inform diagnostic subtyping of SAD in the forthcoming DSM-V. METHODS: Treatment-seeking individuals with generalized SAD (n = 154) and nongeneralized SAD (n = 48) completed a battery of questionnaires. Based on participants' responses to the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS), we estimated log likelihoo

Daily emotional dynamics in depressed youth: a cell phone ecological momentary assessment study.

This study used a new cell phone ecological momentary assessment approach to investigate daily emotional dynamics in 47 youths with major depressive disorder (MDD) and 32 no-psychopathology controls (CON) (ages 7-17 years). Information about emotional experience in the natural environment was obtained using answer-only cell phones, while MDD youths received an 8-week course of cognitive behavioral therapy and/or psychopharmacological treatment. Compared with CON youths, MDD youths reported more intense and labile global negative affect; greater sadness, anger, and nervousness; and a lower rati

Social Order: Using The Sequential Structure of Social Interaction to Discriminate Abnormal Social Behavior in the Rat.

Social interactions form the basis of a broad range of functions related to survival and mating. The complexity of social behaviors and the flexibility required for normal social interactions make social behavior particularly susceptible to disruption. The consequences of developmental insults in the social domain and the associated neurobiological factors are commonly studied in rodents. Though methods for investigating social interactions in the laboratory are diverse, animals are typically placed together in an apparatus for a brief period (under 30 min) and allowed to interact freely while

Rodent models of aggression: from mechanisms to clinical translation.

Aggression is an evolutionarily conserved social behavior that becomes clinically relevant when it loses contextual and inhibitory regulation. Rodent models do not serve to reproduce the full complexity of human violence, with its legal, moral, cultural, and interpersonal dimensions. Their translational value lies instead in making core mechanisms of aggression regulation experimentally accessible. This article discusses how rodent models help to distinguish adaptive from dysregulated aggression; to select clinically informative paradigms; and to identify causal pathways that shape attack thre

Area-Level Social Vulnerability and Severe COVID-19: A Case-Control Study Using Electronic Health Records from Multiple Health Systems in the Southeastern Pennsylvania Region.

Knowledge about neighborhood characteristics that predict disease burden can be used to guide equity-based public health interventions or targeted social services. We used a case-control design to examine the association between area-level social vulnerability and severe COVID-19 using electronic health records (EHR) from a regional health information hub in the greater Philadelphia region. Severe COVID-19 cases (n = 15,464 unique patients) were defined as those with an inpatient admission and a diagnosis of COVID-19 in 2020. Controls (n = 78,600; 5:1 control-case ratio) were a random sample o

Dataset on the learning performance of ECDL digital skills of undergraduate students for comparing educational gaming, gamification and social networking.

This paper reports data about the learning performance of students using four different motivational tools: an educational game, a gamified plugin, a social networking website and a gamified social networking website. It also reports a control group. The data pertain to 379 students of an undergraduate course that covers basic Information and Communication Technology (ICT) skills in Spain. Data corresponds to different learning modules of the European Computer Driving License (ECDL) initiative. The data include variables of four pre-test scores, four post-test scores and a final examination. I

Clarifying the associations between language and social development in autism: a study of non-native phoneme recognition.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are characterized by correlated deficiencies in social and language development. This study explored a fundamental aspect of auditory information processing (AIP) that is dependent on social experience and critical to early language development: the ability to compartmentalize close-sounding speech sounds into singular phonemes. We examined this ability by assessing whether close-sounding non-native language phonemes were more likely to be perceived as disparate sounds by school-aged children with high-functioning ASD (n = 27), than by unaffected control subjec

From dampening to rigidity: How responses to positive emotion shape interpretations of ambiguous social situations.

Interpretation biases and inflexibility in resolving ambiguous social situations are central to cognitive models of depression and anxiety, yet the mechanisms that shape these interpretation processes remain insufficiently understood. This preregistered experiment tested whether experimentally inducing dampening versus amplifying responses to positive emotion causally influences how people interpret and update ambiguous social information. Dutch adults (n = 268) completed a positive autobiographical memory induction and were randomly assigned to a dampening, amplifying, or control condition. P

Prefrontal cortical dysfunction during visual perspective-taking in schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is characterized by marked impairments in a broad and diverse array of social-cognitive domains. Fundamental deficits in the ability to visualize and shift to the perspectives of others and the neural networks that support this ability may contribute to many of these impairments. This study sought to investigate deficits in prefrontal brain function and connectivity in patients with schizophrenia during visual perspective-taking, and the degree to which such deficits contribute to higher-order impairments in social cognition. A total of 20 outpatients with schizophrenia and 20 ag
